National anthem with their self absorbed chants about their school/other interests during the middle of the song?
UVA yelling Hoos in place of whose NCSU yelling Wolfpack instead of Brave Maryland yelling O for the Orioles Some school yells RED during the song, maybe State?
I'm sure there are others. Is Clemson the only school in the ACC who respects the anthem?
Stand up, put your right hand over your heart (take ur hat off, if applicable) or salute the flag, sing if you want, but stop with all the other crap.
That is all. GO TIGERS!

When, where, and why did the national anthem start being played before every single sports event?
Have no problem with it, but sick and tired of people moaning about the different renditions of the song at several million sporting events a year.

Largest economic and military power in the world. We have a quarter of the entire world's GDP...

Switzerland, New Zealand, Brazil and the Scandinavian countries are all more appealing in my opinion. New Zealand is probably your best bet for "America-lite," which I assume most people here would prefer post-indoctrination.
And let's be honest, we're only using military might as a measure of a good country because we happen to actually be #1 in that category. #### the health and well-being of our citizens, we can just destroy other countries until we are the de facto #1!

So there's no answer to why wearing a hat is actually disrespectful.
Maybe this generation realizes having a rule for no other reason than to just have a rule is dumb.

It's disrespectful to wear a hat during the playing of the national anthem because we have decided it is. If you know that, and decide that you can't be bothered to do something as simple as remove your hat during our national anthem, then you ARE being disrespectful. Just like walking around flipping everyone the middle finger is disrespectful, even thought it is arbitrary.

I'm discussing, not arguing. I don't care about this "winning" your talking about. Earlier some one provided a link detailing how the national anthem got started playing in sporting events. Since the hat rule is so important to you, then provide the history and reasoning behind it. That's all I'm pointing out about the hat rule. Give a logical explanation. And this "we made it a rule" wasn't what I was asking for. I was asking for the exact opposite. Now stop being childish and back up your hat rule with a logical explanation.

A) It's not my rule B) I don't care if you wear a hat during the anthem or not.
My response was to the poster who said that this generation has made some assessment of the value of the "rule" based on it being arbitrary and therefore doesn't observe it. This is #1) absurd and #2) an example of actually being disrespectful.
Anyway, where the rule came from, I have no idea.

You can literally make this argument for every single custom or tradition that exists.
Why say no ma'am or yes ma'am to your eldelry grandparents? Why is not cool to holler profanities at funerals? Why should I be forced to shake someones hand when they put their hand out to shake mine?
The pseudo-intellectual arguments really don't prove anything, and are just as absurd as the folks who get their panties in a wad over petty stuff.

I think with the hat argument, you could start with the premise that hats were conceived solely for the purpose of protecting the head from weather and the eyes from sunlight. Seeing as how, by definition, those things don't exist indoors, it makes sense to question the legitamacy of donning a hat inside.
I'm not a fan or arbitrary rules myself, but just because our generation ARBITRARILY decided that wearing hats indoors is stylish, okay, cool whatever, doesn't mean it's a necessarily more practical position. I mean, we're talking about a generation who has their parents call the boss after they have a job interview.

Of course I'm sure I have some "traits" that of millenials, but didn't have helicopter parents and earned pretty much everything I have, including paying my own way to college and getting no financial support after the age of 17.

UNITED STATES CODE
(The USC is comprised of 50 separate "titles". Each title deals expressly with a particular area of federal law.)
USC 36 Chapter 10 Index
§ 170. National anthem; Star-Spangled Banner
The composition consisting of the words and music known as The Star-Spangled Banner is designated the national anthem of the United States of America.
§ 171. Conduct during playing
During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.

It's originally from Knights removing their facegear

[ in reply to Who came up with the hat rule, and what were their reasons.. ] |

so that superiors could see their faces. This was modified to removing any headgear that would cover any part of their identity.
The whole right hand act was due to most people being right handed. They'd take their right hand and "clap" it to their helmets as officers/superiors would pass. This was to show that they had no weapon -- kind of like a display of submission.
Bottom line, though: You do it because it is a way to show respect in our culture. Whether or not it has an intended purpose beyond a display of respect, it still is a way to show respect. Why is clapping your hands a show of approval? Why is giving the thumbs up a show of approval? Why do you get up out of your seat when you are meeting someone new or see someone enter into your presence? Why
It's all about what our culture knows as respect. Every culture has different things that they do to show feels.

Correction: It WAS a way to respect in a culture that is changing.
A new generation doesn't see a hat being worn indoors as disrespectful and so the culture has changed. Some people are just unwilling to change with culture.

like not wearing hats indoors. If you get offended by something benign as wearing a hat indoors, you are too high strung.

The only one of those that is remotely disrespectful

is NCSU literally changing the word of "brave"
"Hoos" still sounds like "Whose", so it's not disrespectful.
"O" & "Red" are the same word completely, so again, not disrespectful at all.
Not sure why anyone would think it is disrespectful...and who are you disrespecting?

We all remove our pants as a show of respect during the national anthem. A fresh start we can all be solumn about. Seems people are tired of the hat thing.

I serve in the Army and my older brother and cousin both serve in the Air Force. Nothing grates our nerves more than being at an event where the National Anthem is being played and it is being disrespected (i.e. - changing lyrics, people talking during it, etc.)

NCSU, the others just sing along with it and shout one special word to them. It isn't disrespectful.

"The Star-Spangled Banner" is a hard song to sing, is not that great of a melody, and its lyrics are bellicose ...
