Why does a CFB team want 105 players???

An NFL team has 53 active players and a max of 16 practice squatters so 69 max total. Why would a school want to house/feed/nurture and potty train 36 extra bodies that are never going to sniff the field? So IPTAY (i.e. "us") is funding 36 bodies to just fill the sideline?? What am I missing here??

In order to stockpile talent, keeping players away from schools that are not in

the "cool club" ... to create a greater chasm between the haves and have nots.
They used to do it back in the 60s ... which is the main reason the 85 scholly limit was put in place.

Right, but there aren't enough good players

To go around.
This is really bad for competitive balance. If you think the ACC, B12 and the Go5 don't have much talent now, wait until the SEC/B1G have 105 players per team. The CFP really will be the SEC/B1G invitational. Sankey will eventually cause the overall national audience to shrink.

They average about 10 or 12 arrests a year....so the extra players from the 105 amount should fill in nicely to take up the vacant pending spots.

Seeing as the SEC is sticking with 85 scholarships for 2025? It's a roster limit, not a mandatory issuance of scholarships

But if a guy gets hurt, you just sub in another one. IR guys don't count.
And its for development. NFL can scout and sign anyone available. You can argue you can do that now with NIL and transfer portal, but not in the middle of the season.

Very good question OP.........i have posted before of doing the exact opposite having a roster of 50 people......yes 50......people think that is too extreme they point out injuries and freshman etc..........my response.......oh well....get creative......50 players is enough to field 2 squads of 11 players on offense and defense.....have 2 kickers and a punter......and a 3rd qb and rb......use the last spot for whatever...extra safety thats plenty.
I've gotten tired of the bloated rosters, the endless questions about a guy on the bench 3 years, plays a few games then transfers anyway......the development thing doesnt really fly with most players....you are what you are as a freshman not much difference as a senior for alot of em.
cut the fat go down to 50.....it wont happen. but it should

The limit used to be 100. They cut them to 85 to make teams more competitive. Florida was producing all the five star players and most stayed in state. That meant that FSU, Miami, and Florida lost 45 players that would have been on roster to other schools. It killed the Florida team domination. Since, more five star players have been coming from everywhere.
My high school team had around 28 players. The same 11 played every snap on both sides of the ball. We were awful. We could compete with other small one A schools but got boat raced by 2A schools. More bodies equals depth.
I’m not saying that 105 will add more depth because it won’t. We will add more players that should have been at D2 or D3. Bench warmers.

IDK why, but I think it is to help with kids transferring out.

I think the idea with the NCAA increasing roster limits and scholly's has to do with helping teams at least have warm bodies to fill gaps due to transfers out.
If you think about it, teams that are mainly developmental, like Wake Forest for instance, may have years of time invested in the development of their roster. These teams routinely have their rosters raided by external power 4 schools looking for proven and developed players, like the Sam Hartman situation. Wake spent tons of time developing him and he bolts for Notre Dame. If I am not mistaken, Wake had a lot of players that year transfer out to larger, or more prominent programs.
The 105 increase, makes it at least possible for teams to absorb some of the blow of losing 2-3 guys in a position group and still be able to field a team or put a warm body as a backup on the roster. That is how I look at it.

But NFL teams can sign a player off any other teams practice squad when a player is injured. When Cape was hurt the last half of the year, I'd have taken Jawja's 3rd team DT

You only get play 11 at a time…105 is unnecessary.

16 on practice squad. If an NFL team needs a player they can just go pick up one off someone else's practice squad or someone sitting at home or training. College's can't do that.
