recruiting cycle when we have so few scholarships to give? We are the defending national champs. If we only have 12-14 scholies to give, surely we can round up 4 and 5 stars to make up at least 10 of those. Maybe a couple of 5s and eight 4s and mayby a couple of 3s at the most. I can see offering 3s if you are starting to see you have no chance of a four or five at a certain position. It's so early.

Well, one of the 3 stars has also been offered by Bama. Star ratings aren't everything. Look at Renfrow!

It never ceases to amaze me how fans criticize our coaching staff's evaluation of players. Maybe they see a player who can help our team and is underrated by the recruiting sites. Or should they wait until that player is offered by Bama and they become a 4 star?

I would ignore the stars. These coaches have proven they know how to evaluate talent without basing their entire analysis off some star system. It would be awesome to just accept nothing but five stars but it's all about who fits the system and is Clemson material.
Besides, we beat a team that has accepted virtually nothing but 4-5 star talent for a National Title and a big contributor of that was some walk on named Renfrow.

Because Clemson makes their own evaluations, and they do not recruit off Rivals.com or 247's or ESPN's recruiting rankings, that's why. They crunch their own film...and rank their own prospects, their own way.
I've been told it's a 25-point system and a huge number of those points are based on evaluated character, IQ, work ethic, coachability, toughness, and suchlike...whereas none of the recruiting services care about any of that; there's plenty of guys with glaring character issues who get 5-stars despite the fact that Clemson wouldn't touch them with a fork. Lost track of how many kids Clemson has backed off of under Dabo because of character concerns. Whatever, a guy who's 25/25 on Clemson's board likely isn't going to get the same ranking, or even close, on Rivals.com...and a guy who's 5-stars may not even be considered an offer at Clemson, even if he's got 30+ other offers from other schools.
Dabo very much does things his own way. 'Course, it definitely seems to be working for him.
Keep in mind Clemson rated guys like Grady Jarrett, Kendall Joseph, Kevin Dodd, Jadar Johnson, TJ Green, etc, etc, when no one else did.

We missed on players Kitt and Bell but also hit on players like Renfrow.
At the end of the day, it's the coaches jobs on the line. If they think players are Take then the coaches have earned enough respect for fans to see it play out. These early rankings change All the time. At this point last year, AJ Terrell was a 3 star that moved up to a 5 star.

Despite the maniacs in the thread saying how dare you, it is a legitimate topic especially when we have been known to reach early and fill up early and miss some highly ranked guys at end. This doesn't mean "we suck" or "coaches are stupid" on the contrary we have on of the best staffs in the nation and superb recruiters and evaluators. That doesn't exempt them from scrutiny and analysis. Sort of the point of these boards, ya know? So the people that won't address the ISSUE but simply try to hijack and shut down the thread, go away. You aren't adding anything.

If your only criteria for a good fit for our program is having 4 and 5 stars, then you imply that our coaches don't know how to evaluate talent and fit for our program. You're also questioning their ability to develop players. Our strength is taking good recruiting classes but not classes like Georgia and most of the sec that underperform every year. I think it's silly to question whether our coaches not what they are doing if they offer someone that isn't a 4/5*.

What is the issue? I think that is where the confusion is coming from. The issue seems to be the OP questioning when our staff offers who they offer.
Also, who have we missed out on by offering lower ranked players too early?
