Public Service Announcement

Feb 13, 2023, 9:02 AM

I just received a phone call from a friend who is about a 20 year high school baseball Umpire. He said that this morning on the Mickey Plyler Show that Mickey was explaining a baseball rule as an example of his vast rule knowledge. He stated that if a batted ball strikes a base umpire in fair territory that it is a live ball. This is NOT always correct.
Please do not make an A$$ out of yourself at a youth baseball game this year because you learned the rules from Mickey.

Have a great day!

With no one on base, the field umpire is positioned on the first base line behind the first baseman.
Fair ball passes first baseman and strikes Umpire. Live ball since no infielder was in position to make a play.

Wait, so that's not an exception?***

The only exception I could think of would be if the ball ricochets off of something in foul territory and then hits the umpire in fair territory! I would tend to agree with Mickey on this one.

What if a plate umpire gets hit in the face or the nads?

Is that fair? Seems fair to me.

Let me re-phrase the question: When is a fair-ball that strikes an umpire NOT a live ball?

When the umpire is straddling the baseline ?

That's the only weird scenario I can think of.
