What has to happen for us to sell out a basketball game?
Jan 10, 2018, 9:30 PM
|
|
Every time basketball game attendance sucks, we hear one or more of the following excuses:
Clemson isn't good Clemson plays a boring style Clemson doesn't score enough points There was a football game the same weekend It was too close to a holiday Students weren't on campus Students were studying for exams
Asking for better attendance at basketball games is mostly forbidden around these parts. In addition to the above excuses, at least one response will involve something about Clemson supporting basketball so well, "I camped out for tickets once," "Digger Phelps said Clemson was one of the loudest arenas," etc.
Guess what? Clemson is good. We are ranked in the top 20 of both polls, and top 5 in RPI. We play an exciting brand of basketball. We score almost 80 points per game (that's a lot compared to many teams). There are no more football games for many months. There are not an upcoming holidays of significance. Students are back on campus. No exams are occurring for quite some time.
If there ever were a time to support basketball, it is now. We are playing great, have a nice combination of veterans and young players, and recruiting is as good as it's been in a very very long time. We have new facilities.
SUPPORT OUR TEAM. PROVE THAT CLEMSON CARES ABOUT BASKETBALL AND WILL SUPPORT IT WELL.

We used to have (time for) season b-ball tix. There was a group of seats in our section each year that sat empty all season, except for the Duke and UNC games. It seems like there should be a way people could donate tickets they don't want to scouts or veterans or someone who would appreciate them!

Go 100% general admission, do away with season tickets.

you’d see much larger and more vocal crowds. This would cost Clemson less than 2.5 million.

Do you honestly think fans don't attend basketball games
Jan 10, 2018, 9:54 PM

because they don't have access to good seats?
It's not a big arena. There aren't any bad seats. A basketball game is a decent bargain if you look at ticket price, new arena, ease of parking, entertainment value, etc.

It works very well at Duke. We sell around 7K of season tickets and less than half show up unless it’s UNC or Duke. What Clemson has done in the past doesn’t work so why not try something new.

Why should the team have to wait on fans for decent support?
Jan 10, 2018, 9:55 PM
|
|
Shouldn't a good fan base that truly cares about basketball support the team reasonably well all the time? I can understand not having sellouts if the team is bad, but we've played good basketball for a while now and many games the arena isn't even half full. Granted, the last home game was better, and that was without students on campus. But Clemson players and coaches deserve so much better.

yeah, why can’t we have a crowd like NC State’s, they have 5 losses already this year, and probably won’t make the tournament, but the fans show up at every game and pack the house. If we can really get the John full for a lot of these games, I seriously believe you will see Clemson basketball compete at a very high level this year.

I would go if I didn't live so far, of course I come for football games but football is my favorite sport and it's not even close. Plus, football has a ton to offer with tailgating etc. to make it an all day experience. It makes the drive worth it, even if we lose the football game. It's on the bucket list to go to Clemson basketball games regularly. But that probably won't be able to happen till I'm in a closer proximity.
To answer your question though, we have to make it far in the tournament play this year, like Elite Eight, for our fans to get seriously interested again. That's the harsh truth of it. I always try to go see my Tigers even when we were average in football but not everyone is like that. I think if we go to the NCAA Tournament perennially then I'd expect fan attendance to come up drastically.

The build up
Jan 11, 2018, 7:21 AM
|

Good points, Judge. Ut would be interesting to see data comparing years we did fill the stadium. Where is the drop-off? Students, Iptay donors, other ticket holders?
Part of the picture is building momentum, year over year. If one looks at history, the attendance builds over time. It becomes a habit and something you plan for.
Another part for fans close to Clemson is share of wallet. If one goes to football championships, does that leave less $ for basketball?
For students, it's partly culture, interest, and knowledge of the sport. Winning over time means new students are tuned in. This is a big loss over the time Brownell has been figuring out his formula.
Even this year, there will be a 'when will the other shoe drop and reality hit' hesitation by fans. So as winning continues, excitement, and attendance, will build.

that Clemson has frequently started out fast, only to fold as Jan and Feb roll on. That may or may not happen this year, but it has happened so many times that fans begin to expect it. Hopefully a couple of good seasons and a few wins in the NCAA tourney will create enough excitement to erase all that built up bias towards our team.

the lower arena was the most-filled it's been this season, but there were empty seats in the top rows on both ends
the State game the weekend before was opposite.. the lower arena had lots of empty seats (with folks in N.O.) but the upper arena was pretty packed... thanks to $10 tickets, i guess

I think there are two reason for the lack of support for the Clemson Basketball team.
1.) Clemson Basketball has been an end of year disappointment for so many years that I believe the fans do not trust a Brownell coached team will sustain this winning. It is hard to feel that the tigers are a tournament team to fail in February and lose in the first round of the ACC tournament.
2.) Clemson has pushed it's long term loyal donors to the point that all the discretionary money is spent on football. This leave very little money left to support any other sport.
