Dooley’s comments were true but the 81 Tigers on a mission

that spilled over from1980 when the Bulldogs won the National Championship. Only Tiger fans remember that Clemson wore them out on the stat sheet in Athens that year. It was Scott Woener that saved them from defeat. The 81 Tiger defense stoned Buck Belue and Herschel Walker in the valley. One of the many dominant defensive performances in 1981.

The game with Georgia in the Valley was the game of the season for Clemson. It was bigger than the Orange Bowl even though it was the NC game. Georgia vs Clemson were the best two teams in the country. The offense's job was not to lose the game, Clemson won with defense and playing field position. If Danny was in field goal range, he always took the 3 points.

UGA was up 14-0 off of 60 yard punt return for a TD, and a 100 yard interception by the same UGA player. Total yardage at that point, Clemson 206 total yards of offense, UGA 16 yards of total offense.
Clemson lost 20-16, with over 400 yards of total offense to UGA's 230.
UGA had a horseshoe up its butt all year. It took a miracle by Scott in the closing minute for them to beat Florida. Shoot, if George Rogers doesn't fumble late SCAR would have likely beat UGA.
Then, who do they play for the National Title, a 10th ranked Notre Dame, and UGA struggled to win that game.

1981 UGA game...

I was caught scalping my $12 student date ticket for $25 prior to the game.
I went in front of the judge (who was inside a trailer just inside gate one) at 10:00 prior to the 1:00 kickoff.
He read the write up and looked straight at me and said "what the hell is wrong with you? This ticket is going for $75 in every parking lot on this campus".

As Walker said later, Clemson should have won by more than 10 points with all those 9 total “gimmes” (take-always), and he was right.

I was still a lanky high school kid working at my gas station job ( when someone else still pumped your gas) while listening on the radio. What I wouldn't give to be that simple kid with that simple job and no worries.

A great stat is that Herschel Walker and George Rogers, both Heisman winners from our 2 biggest rivals, neither ever scored a touchdown against us.

I was a sophomore in 1981 and grew up on Johns Island. Would catch rides home with Frank. He had the best hands of any receiver on that team. Played a lot of basketball with him and Terry Kinard. Both great guys. TK could have played NBA ball. Great memories!

Maybe when the ACC Network runs out of stuff to show from this years sports season then they will go way back in time and show some vintage games from Football seasons past, preferably starting with the late 70's and all of the 80's
