Getting lied to.

Feb 10, 2023, 11:04 AM

Over the last few days, I've had a lot of opportunity to read the platitudes provided by CEO's and other people leaders following mass layoffs. We received one from our Sr VP this morning (even thought cuts will be ongoing through next week).

They all rattle on about how excited they are about the new challenges they face, and how much more opportunity we have to move forward. WT F does that actually mean? How does doing the same work with less people make us more "agile", or more able to respond to customer demands? How does that make anything better? Why not just acknowledge that its going to be harder to do teh same work with less people, and just stop making up fantasies about how much better we'll be?

For awhile, basically everything that upper mgt told us, you could expect the exact opposite. I'm trying to figure out the advantage to that, and why leaders from many different companies say these things. I don't understand why lying to your employees is somehow better than just being honest.

very few people want to hear hard truths.

Lewis Rothschild : People want leadership, Mr. President, and in the absence of genuine leadership, they'll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership. They're so thirsty for it they'll crawl through the desert toward a mirage and when they discover there's no water, they'll drink the sand.

President Andrew Shepherd : Lewis, we've had presidents who were beloved, who couldn't find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight. People don't drink the sand because they're thirsty. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference.

I work for a Fortune 50 / Dow 20 component. Layoffs / resizing a part of every day life.

Bought a lot of promising companies. Tried to integrate them all. Successful maybe 10% of the time.

The rest we ruined. Have fun.

Yeah and we often have our end of the year cuts in late October so folks off thr books by End of year. Gotta make our quarterly earnings for the Street

As a cog in the machine there are positives as well but I will choose not to list. These days the severance packages are pretty sweet. So if RIF then I’d be happy with it.

I am dead inside.

USA: Revenue drops, fire everybody.

Japan: Revenue drops, WAGE INCREASES.

"It's important for our long-term growth to secure our workforce," Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa told an earnings briefing.

The Kyoto-based company does not plan to raise software or game console prices.

Why shouldn't they feel good about the future?

And even if they aren't around in the future, their severance packages are much more generous than yours. Another reason to be optimistic.

"We considered how puny top level managements income is relative to increasing inflation and decided to lay off 4 or 5000 people to cut the overhead so we could increase our personal income.

To be able to make the company barely functional those of you not in upper level management are going to be forced to work weekends and evenings. We suggest you've brought this upon yourselves by not leaving before we saturated the labor market with people who have skills and experience similar to yours.

You are stuck and #####ed while we getting paid and laid.

and your emotional reaction to the news shows that you need to work on your attitude. This isn’t about you. Take your ego down a notch, remove this selfish me-me-me wall in your mind about the opportunities that this much needed restructuring will bring. We need to embrace this change because it will make you a stronger team member, and for us to succeed as a company, we need you to step up your game.
