What should we do with them and how do we stop the flow of them?

Turn them around. They made it there without parents.

Unfortunately letting them in just encourages the behavior.
We need a much easier, and cheaper path to legal immigration.
We're sponsoring one of our employees, who is Ethiopian, for citizenship and it's ridiculously expensive.

Makes sense to me. We are encouraging them now.

Well, maybe something like this
1. We house the children in some sort of reasonable living quarters while we process them - nothing fancy, but nothing punitive either. Surely we can afford to do this for children. I think there are plenty of charities across America that would be glad to help us with this.
2. We devote more resources to find American relatives or homes that will take responsibility for the kids while their refugee cases are being adjudicated. And we follow up to make sure that they appear for that adjudication
3. We allow them to stay if we have reasonable expectations that they will become educated and later contributing members of our society.
I cannot tell you how many Hispanic kids that I have taught. The vast majority of them have been hard-working, honest, respectful students. A number of them have taken my most challenging classes and done well. Many of them have gone on the earn academic honors and go to college. I cannot think of a single one who has not gone on to being a contributing member of our society.
These are kids. They deserve a chance to prove themselves. If America cannot afford THIS type of opportunity, we need to stop calling ourselves the land of such.

What if it did not end ? What if we continued to take in these kids and turn them into educated & productive citizens of the United States ? Would that kill us ? I wonder.
I know that freaks y'all out, so I am willing to entertain thoughts on a compromise position. Do you have any suggestions that are humane and reasonable ?

It was just a nice thing some lady wrote I believe and they put near the statue. It's not like it's anything more than that. It's not as if we can't adapt our society at times to being practical.

So we can build bigger McMansions and drive fancier cars

They're not coming here to be free. They're coming here to make a buck. We leverage their cheap labor here, then they leverage our dollar sending it home. We use them here to build bigger houses, and pay for fancier things, they send our dollars back home so their family can get running water and a flushing toilet and maybe a window AC unit and afford food.
I have YET to find an illegal worker in the US who came here to be "free". Every single one of them, like 99%, are sending money back to their home country to support a wife and kids, or their parents, or siblings, or all of the above. Sometimes they come to the US make $800 a week and send $600 a week back home, living on only $200 (or less) a week. Back home that buys medicine for their sick mother, or pays for their son's education. Or that new piece of land and a house they hope to build some day and return to after working in the US, and retire.
That's the truth behind it. Everything else is politics.

Their parents hope in the US. When they grow up

Most have someone here in the US to take them. They just need to meet up with them. They know they won't be sent home. So they stay with their uncle, who raises them in the US, and they're educated here, maybe get a good job here, and send money back to whoever.
Sometimes they lose their original goals and become citizens. Whoever they were supporting leaves them. Wife runs off with someone else. Whatever. Then they just stay. But coming here, originally, it's always to make money. And originally they always have someone to send money back home to support.

I agree with the adults who want to work or even teenagers. There are tons of kids too young to work though. The US taxpayers have to pay for them. Some are even just single moms with 3 or 4 small children with them as well. Generally I was talking about unaccompanied minors though.

Tiggity,
I think that the biggest part of our freedom in America is based on the type of economic freedom which you describe. Most Americans are far more interested in their economic well being than some type of political freedom.

I think the parents have to break the law in the US to be charged.

When the pandemic is over, they will be free to come in and there will be no more crisis at the border...just more people in the US to feed (even though we apparently can't feed all US Americans as it is).
