Back when the USSR was still intact, Putin was a (almost certainly) loyal member of the KGB, committed to the agenda of the USSR.

He was also an important person in post-USSR Russia in the years of 1991 through 2000; he assumed they presidency of the USSR in ~ 2000 and fairly quickly managed to take control of Russia’s bureaucracy. Shortly thereafter, he (in effect although not in formal title) became dictator.

A lot of ground was covered between 1991 and 2000. It became clear to smart and studious people that the USSR version was an obsolete ‘business’ model. Too much money spent on both defense and not a vibrant enough economy to pay for said military.

The historical ‘boom or bust’ model in which a militaristic country would, for a short period of time, bulk up its military and then ‘pay for’ that military be conquering another country (and subsequently exploiting the conquered country’s economy and resources to ‘pay itself back’) became obsolete with the advent of nuclear tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles + submarine based nuclear missiles. Remember that the USSR already had police control of both Hungary and Czechoslovakia when, in 1955 and 1968, respectively, those countries had their rebellions that USSR then quelled militarily. Also, remember that the ‘Warsaw Pact’ countries of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Rumania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Albania, and East Germany were not actually part of the USSR, whereas Belarus, some of N.E.Rumania, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia were fully absorbed into the USSR.

USSR’s economic exploitation of their Warsaw Pact ‘allies’ became increasingly less valuable as the economic power of the Warsaw Pact allies stayed stagnant, as opposed to the increasingly powerful economies of those European countries that the USSR did not control. The easiest to see example of this ‘controlled by USSR’ vs ‘not controlled by USSR’ comparison is East Germany vs West Germany. As if the late 1970’s, the disparity between E.Germany and W.Germany was obvious. By the late 1980’s, that disparity was enormous. One doesn’t have to be a ‘Putin lover’ to recognize that Putin is an exceptionally smart man. He was aware of the history of the Warsaw Pact allies and of their continuously decreasing cost-benefit usefulness to the USSR.

When combining the huge risk of war with NATO (which really means the USA) for attempting to conquer any of the former Warsaw Pact countries, and calculating the benefit from recapturing the economic output / economic potential from a Warsaw Pact country (with East Germany being an exception), it makes little sense for Russia to be aggressive. If a nobody like me recognizes this, then people in the know (or people who should be in the know) also recognize this. Putin surely recognizes this; thus, that part of his interview with T.Carlson is plausibly truthful.

Bsck to Putin as an enemy of the USA. Other than trade related rivalries, he has no rational reason to be a true enemy of America … except when the USA involves itself in matters which impair Russia’s own economic objectives. We (America) have involved ourselves in military activities that were designed to weaken Russia (Chechnya and Georgia jump out; our involvement in the conflict within the former Yugoslavian provinces in 1996 was none of our business). These activities, understandably, increased the negative perceptions that Putin had borne from back in his USSR days in the KGB. Thus, instead of doing things to diminish the pre-existing unfriendly sentiments about America, our actions served to reinforce those sentiments.

My apologies for the long answer, but while your question was simple, the answer (at least in this case) cannot be provided briefly.

How about being a KGB agent during the Cold War? Think he was a friend of Americans? How about sitting atop a country for 23 years now, with an actual oligarchy of “globalist elites”? How about allying himself with China, N Korea, and Iran?

Are those good enough reasons, or is it just what the TV told me?
