Its best you hit up cabelas or bass pro and buy a kit with rod, reel, backing, leaders, and tippet. It's hard to recommend anything of quality to piece together a set up for under $100. For example, the tippet I use runs $18 for a few yards. Thats the most minor component.

I love to fly fish and do it often. I hated how expensive the entry was. If you're fishing east coast streams, you dont usually find yourself casting far like you see in movies or videos. A lot of it is letting line out and getting good presentation with your flies. YouTube videos and a $100 kit will net you plenty of fish.

Talk to the local fly shops about what's fishing well in the rivers. Buy those flies. Tell them you have no idea what you're doing and they should give you lots of good advice.

Alternatively, you can wait on FB Marketplace for some gear. Solid major brands include Sage, Orvis, and Reddington. I have two Reddington Classic Trout's and use those most often.

Just go into cabelas and get one for like $80 and then grab some 6-8 pound line . Don’t over think it

I jumped right to fly fishing for some reason.

I have great success with and Ugly Stik and Rapala lures, usually small floating trout patterns for the lures.

I would put 6 lb fluorocarbon on it.

1/4 ounce black/gold panther martin or a 1/4 ounce joe's fly usually works pretty good.

I think you're clearly in Wal Mart territory for anything <$100.

The problem with that is that it will fail at the worst time.

The biggest freshwater fish I ever caught was in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on the Canadian side using a Popeil Pocket Fishermen.
