Look, DJU did not play a great game. He held onto the ball too long in situations and took sacks. He didn’t tuck the ball and run for open yardage on many occasions. He locked in on primary receivers and didn’t scan the field well.
But this was his first game as full time starter… and the play calling did nothing to help him.
While I have been a bit of a critic of Caldwell in the past, I don’t particularly blame the offensive line tonight. They gave adequate protection until later in the game when Georgia could pin their ears back with the 10 point lead.
The biggest issue was the horrendous play calling. Why on earth are we running deep routes when we are playing an elite defensive line who won’t allow enough time for the routes to develop and are pressuring a young starter. Why not give easier, shorter throws? Why not give faster throws… throws that are in the middle of the field right where the blitzing linebackers just left open. Why not attack the perimeter and spread the defense that is squeezed into the tackle box. There were so many bone headed things called. Why is the highest paid offensive coordinator in the nation taking 50 game minutes to see what a casual observer can see within a few series? I honestly was pleasantly surprised we didn’t try to run it into the teeth of the defense stubbornly like we usually do. Instead we tried to throw deeper routes against a heavy pass rush… equally as boneheaded.
I am not sure why Tony feels like we should run a straight forward offense and “out physical and out talent” opposing teams. Venables has elite talent and still comes up with all kinds of nasty pass rush schemes and disguised coverages. No excuse for Tony to run the offensive in simple mode. We never take what the defense gives. It’s infuriating. Gone is any kind of movement to get the defense out of position. When’s the last time we ran a jet sweep or a fake jet sweep to pull a defender out of position. I could go on and on.
I understand Jeff and Tony together delivered some national championships… but I’m really not seeing how Tony on his own is delivering a value on the field that matches his salary.
