Personally, I don't care who moves where just as long as Clemson is never left on the outside looking in. That would be a tragedy for a FB school that has always competed with the best in college FB!!!

So Oregon would join the ATLANTIC Coast Conference ? Our geography is all outta whack these days

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m against the idea of coast to coast

3

Jul 28, 2023, 1:04 PM

It’s bad enough to have the trip from Syracuse to Miami to deal with…many people just think of FB, but how about the mid-week “Olympic sports”? The Rutgers vs UCLA volleyball matchup will take about 2 hours max with a 3 day trip away from classes. I’d rather go with MORE conferences of 8-12 and limit travel time and increase attendance & rivalries.

Army
Navy
Rutgers
UConn
Maryland
W. Virginia
Cincinnati
E. Carolina
C. Florida
S. Florida

Any other possible options along the East Coast?
Not sure what else could happen to improve the quality of life in the ACC… how about a very selective merger with SEC and have a varsity & JV arrangement?!?

Seems weird that you believe Rutgers or Merryland would take a giant pay cut to join the ACC. What do you think they would gain?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I never said or thought they would

2

Jul 28, 2023, 3:37 PM

My entire point was about NOT stretching out the current footprint of the ACC in any further expansion plan. Personally, I’d like to chop off the map with VT being the most “northern” team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly what the SEC has done

2

Jul 28, 2023, 10:13 PM

A regional geographic footprint would require competent conference leadership and a recognized commitment to football -- two things the ACC lacks. Oregon joining the ACC not only will not happen, it makes no sense for lady's volleyball to travel 3000+ miles to play in front of a few hundred non-paying family members & fans and miss 3 days of classes.

Re: I just don’t see a way to save the ACC…

Jul 30, 2023, 1:50 PM

Just where is Clemson going go right now if they can find a way to break the GOR? I don’t see them being accretive to the current payout the SEC teams are already receiving. Not saying Clemson is not a good fit for the SEC only that it might not work out that way. Unless Ga, Alabama or LSU is going to see a significant increase in their annual payout, I’m not sure they would add another Top10 team to their schedule. Doing so just adds another obstacle for those teams getting into the CFP.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: ESPN, 247Sports reports detail potential ACC expansion candidates

2

Jul 28, 2023, 1:31 PM

If the ACC is seriously looking at other teams from the big east, CUSA, and so on, they need to stop. The only teams that move the needle... to me at least that'll significantly increase conference payouts are:

Alabama
Florida
Georgia
Tennessee
Notre Dame
LSU
Texas
Oklahoma
Ohio State
Michigan
and
USC

And the ACC ain't getting any of those teams. So the ACC needs to let FSU, Clemson etc go their own ways.

To admit another school the GOR would have to be revised. While Clemson may have been stupid enough to sign away our TV rights I'm sure we didn't sign away our right to refuse a contract amendment.

Imo, that would be the door we need to exit this flustercluck called the ACC.

1

Jul 28, 2023, 2:11 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: pretty sure the way that works is the conference votes on

1

Jul 29, 2023, 4:39 AM

Adding conference members materially changes the conference and would provide grounds to void the GOR. And the ACC knows this.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think there are elements to the media agreements

1

Jul 28, 2023, 1:44 PM

that get triggered when a market becomes primary. I believe that is why SMU continually gets a look. Rice could possibly be the same if they were actually looked at back in 2021 but imagine that was more of ACC exploring SMU and SMU trying to bring someone along. I thing that some of the cable network carriage fees are determined by in/out of market. Even though the ACCN is now carried by all the major carriers with the addition of Comcast last year, I believe the carriage fee may be substantially higher if the subscriber is in market vs out. Let's say that Dallas has 2.7 million subscribers. If the ACCN is getting $0.50 a month for out of market, that's about $16 mil per year. Now let's say that triples to $1.50 for in market. Now you are looking at $48mil per year. Now if other markets outside of Dallas but in Texas also increase even at somewhere in between, then do the math there. Rice=Houston - another enormous market, would have been potentially the same point to analyze. Note: I don't know exact figures, so #s are hypothetical on why something would be looked at and #s at least crunched for all schools in new markets. While TV markets can't be looked at the same when compared to brand importance in most cases these days when talking about the elite programs, they still can influence carriage fees for those conferences that own their own network. Also, the year they are talking about looking at those schools was 2021, it could have been part of analysis as they were leveraging getting Comcast/Xfinity to add ACCN as that deal was the last of the big ones struck which was at the very EOY 2021.

2

Jul 28, 2023, 1:46 PM

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe:

1

Jul 28, 2023, 1:50 PM

It could come down to taking the blunt end by refusing to admit another team even if it meant a slight income increase. FSU and Clemson could afford it while some teams, I believe, wouldn't. The bitterness of failing to expand given the opportunity might help sway a few more teams to disband the conference.

https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-forum/message/thats-most-likely-delusional-33079803

Jul 28, 2023, 2:05 PM [ in reply to ACC can’t expand b/c that breaks the GOR… ]

case at all. The new members would be forced to sign the GOR but don't see how that would let any existing member off the hook.

Expanding IMO would however hurt the ability to disband the conference if that truly is a possibility for breaking GOR. Anybody new you let in won't be voting to disband. So if you are stuck at 7 now trying to get a majority or worse, stuck below a supermajority threshold then you are only creating more of an uphill battle.

I just don't expect anyone to leave prior to 2036 when GOR expires unless the conference votes to disband and that in fact kills any financial liability to the others based on GOR. By then, who knows it may not make sense any longer anyway as media contracts in general could be headed down, football viewership declines, minor league system evolves, etc. Clemson football will be just fine regardless. There is plenty of $ to achieve the level of success we have come to expect and with the 12 team playoff, we will be more than relevant for this 10 year period if that is what it takes.

Seriously? Who thought adding Rice would add value? Fire them now. We waisted money on that.

Looking into adding Oregon, Washington, W Virginia, and some Texas schools (preferably Baylor, TCU and or Texas Tech rather than SMU) at least makes a little sense and should be explored by the conference. At least that would show some fight (like the Big 12 has). Even if it’s a Hail Mary.

Jul 28, 2023, 3:21 PM

ESPN and Fox are paying an equal share to any new Power 5 additions in the Big 12. Colorado will make the same 31.7 million as the current Big 12 schools when the new contract starts after the UT/OU exit next year. Why can't they do the same for the ACC? I believe the Big 12 was told any additional Group of 5 additions would not get equal share.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ESPN would be paying more if the ACC adds 2 team

Jul 29, 2023, 4:10 PM

the how much is determined by which 2 teams. The team you mentioned would at best keep the avg the same. You have to add teams that drive additional $ above the avg to increase Clemsons take. Other than ND, that is probably only Oregon or possibly Oregon and Washington combo. None of which makes sense from a logistical standpoint

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: ESPN, 247Sports reports detail potential ACC expansion candidates

Clemson and the ACC will whither away unless it all gets blown up. I honestly hope FSU pulls the trigger and bolts first. At least that would force Clemson’s hand to act.

Re: TNET: ESPN, 247Sports reports detail potential ACC expansion candidates

Why would the ACC want to share its money with other schools that don't bring anything to the table? I don't see a contract renegotiation for a dime more by adding the schools mentioned.

I thought Clemson and FSU were working together but, apparently, that's not the case.

Re: TNET: ESPN, 247Sports reports detail potential ACC expansion candidates

Jul 29, 2023, 3:16 PM

Oregon, Washington, Cal, Stanford would be ideal ACC expansion, perhaps also ASU and Utah.
They may come to the ACC because ACC is a better academic fit. Cal and Stanford will never join a conference that includes BYU and Baylor.
This should increase ACCN revenue and get us closer to the Big Ten and SEC. ESPN might also pay more, since games between Washington/Oregon against Clemson/FSU would be big draws. It'll also bring us another time slot, so you can have ACC games run late.
There is no way out of the GOR, end those delusions, this is the only way to help us compete with the SEC and Big Ten. We're here until 2036, so lets make the most of it
We're not poaching the Big 12, and no other eastern team would be helpful.
