Also, our pay for coordinators is near the top of the country. If Dabo wants to, we can almost go poach whatever non-head coaches we want. This is one reason I don’t worry about it all that much.

Kevin Steele, Chad Morris and Brent Venables were all hires from outside the program. Elliott/Scott was the only recent internal coordinator promotion since Billy Napier.

We definitely could… who knows, really. I hope we play Iowa State in a bowl, because they’ll bring a heck of a game plan to try and prove themselves, and our interim D, will have a big test to try and prove if he knows how to make halftime adjustments against a coach like Matt Campbell. Should be a great interview for an internal candidate. Otherwise, we can just hire someone from the outside.

True and Clemson is Clemson no matter who is coaching. And no person, no person in any position, President, AD, Head Coach, etc. is bigger than Clemson.

And be championship caliber. Hope Dabo resists the urge to only hire within and at least looks at, interviews outside, etc. But at the same time he’s won two NCs and I’m still waiting on my first. So I’ll go shut up and color.

I think if BV was gone he would have been gone last weekend. I think the longer this takes is that it's not him.

I think the tone of this article says BV wants to go if they will have him, so I guess we will see how the final interviews impact things.

The assistant coaches are the bricks but Dabo is the mortar and I can guarantee you he has a plan for filling any openings for assistants. The world of college football has changed because of the Portal and as I have said before it is not about a coach or losing a game, it is about players wanting to play. Numbers will be a problem and Dabo and other top coaches may have to tweak their recruiting or they could get boxed into a corner.

TNet's culture though ....after adversity and during....that's a study in complete chaos and quitterdom. There are many many here that understand how to hold the line .. but boy oh boy the loudest voices are those chin deep in doubt .

Agree David - culture matters... a lot. But so does coaching
Dec 5, 2021, 8:37 AM

selection and right now the indications are that Dabo will promote from within the program (i.e. his "plan"). That may ultimately work out but after this season, I'm more than a little concerned about continuing to be so incestuous in our program. Being so protective of a culture by always looking within for hires and answers risks stagnation and can be deadly to an organization.
Clemson really needs a shot of innovation - particularly on offense. Will promoting within provide fresh eyes on our scheme or just double down on "the way we have always done things"?
As we continue forward with the likelihood of some coaching changes, I really hope that Dabo considers this as an opportunity to bring some fresh eyes and ideas into the program. Through all of Saban's constant coordinator position turnover he has been bringing in fresh eyes in just about every case. Doing so has not damaged Saban's culture but instead allowed Alabama to change (especially offensively) and remain at the top of the mountain.

Saban has hired some of the best minds, including nfl talent. Some of that comes with a lot of baggage. Not sure where that will place in Dabos plan. Time will tell.....

tabbyplague® why is it so hard to recognize that no offensive coordinator can do much when nearly all of the key units on the offense were under-staffed all year?
Blaming Tony Elliott is the easy (but not thoughtful) explanation.

Thanks, David. Spot On. Particularly, as you noted that if some decide to leave, the Clemson supporters ($) and faithful have graciously padded the program enough for DS to pick who he wants to fill the shoes.
And if DR cares to leave, a lesser challenge. JC and the Board will have their hands full of applicants who will come calling.

Great article.
The only thing that can destroy the culture is the spoiled players that will continually leave for the portal because they aren’t quite good enough to start immediately. The transfer portal will kill college football……death by 1,000 cuts.

Yes, well said. This will placate the Tnet clic as well it should. This is your baby. That's your business, and you're good at it.
That said, we're not Bama. Bama attracts the Jimmy and Joes and pretty much self recruits. But as others have said, Saban has been willing to adapt and change. So far, Dabo has resisted. That's fine, it's worked this long. Does it still work? Perhaps, but it needs adapting.
Clemson can't afford to sit on idle and restock our cupboards with talent. UGA couldn't either. That's why Kirby went and got lanning. Why UNC went and got theirs.
Can't discount the fact that, from the 2 master recruiters we've had this past decade that got us here, one left for South Fla a couple years ago and as I've been worried all week, CBV will take the OU job, is our other one. OU is going after BV because he's family of sorts, but mostly because he's become one of the top 3 recruiters in the country. I expect they'll say as much if he's announced.
So yes, the culture is good and wholesome. It will serve us well. But it's nothing without the Jimmy and Joes. It appears that Dabo needs to adapt, use the portal, oversign, but most of all find two bodies that are masters in recruiting.

While I really hate the thought of BV leaving (for obvious reasons) what I fear most is the number/caliber of defensive players/recruits that may follow him!! Most of these guys came to Clemson to play for BV.

Exactly, games are won and lost by how well you have recruited, and how bad you have recruited, and that's the bottom line. Hopefully Dabo hasn't forgotten about what he said when he was hired as HC, he said that change starts with recruiting the best players to your program, and so far, that has proven to be so!!!!

Culture doesn't prevent injuries and illness among the roster, either.
Players who are injured / sick and can't play don't block or tackle.
Your "coach QB's" comment is a cheap shot ... sad.

Venables' interview with Dabo--an 11 pm phone call that lasted into the wee hours of the morning--is the stuff of legend.
I hope the next candidate doesn't have to go through one quite as long, but I'm sure both men were very sold on each other after they finally hung up the phone.

People talking about how the glory days are over, or, like in the article, about how “something’s wrong in Clemson”. Its absolutely nuts.
I absolutely hope those complainers I see on here and everywhere else aren’t throwing SCar fans under the bus for being whiners because the fact that y’all wear orange instead of garnet doesn’t mean you’re different than them.
I’ve seen about the most pathetic outbursts from “fans” this year because Dabo isn’t doing things the way some fans want him to do things, but that is precisely what has gotten Clemson where they have been. Clemson will be fine. There’s just some turbulence but I’m sure the program Dabo has built can withstand a little turbulence

Dabo’s Defensive coordinator has been decided before Brent left, Dabo always has a plan & you can believe he’s knee deep in putting the parts in position.
It will be a coach that brings his defensive players together as one outside of Brent!
I believe it will be Bates or Reed in my Opinion & both will be great coaches!
