Clemson releases pre-camp depth chart
Clemson gave a look into where the Tigers stand out of spring ball and going into next month's fall camp with a pre-camp depth chart this week. Clemson has the most new faces on the offensive side this season and things aren't very settled there. The starting O-line listed, left to right, is Jordan Read Update » |

Agreed on Ross. Never been a coach and I trust our coaches, but I will never understand putting a key player in a return role like that.

I'm pretty sure all 3 starters (Skalski, Spector, and Simpson) will remain the starters. All of them are solidified into their spots. The interesting part will be to see who gets the reps off the bench, in order to have the inside track to starting next year when Skalski and Spector are gone.

I'd be shocked if either Venables' kid is actually competing for a spot. We've seen both of them already. They have good heads on their shoulders, but just have nowhere near the physical talent of the other guys, and that's what matters when you play Alabama or Ohio State.
Agreed on Ross too. Seems insane putting him in statistically the most likely role to be injured.

Always fun to see the early depth chart and then compare opening day. There is a huge difference from the last few seasons and it is the size of the offensive line. It has appeared in the past that our line was too slow because they were too big and that is not the case this year. Will the size of the O Line lead to a better running game?

We must have one of the lightest lines in any of the elite programs, after getting out physicalled by Bama, LSU, and OSU in recent games. You’d think they’d be headed the other direction.

Bama? Not they didn’t put physical us. Bama is one team we have had a lot of success with in regards to Oline. LSU had a little success but to me Trevor just had a rough night and our D just got whipped. I don’t recall their DLine dominating our Oline. Now yes OSU beat the breaks off us on both lines in the last game. But last season was the worst Oline we’ve seen in the in some time. A lot of teams had success last season against our Oline.

I’m wondering where Sheridan Jones plays into the rotation. I thought he was a boss last year and am a little confused he’s not listed at one of the starting positions opposite Booth.

Rock Solid on both sides of ball -- no real surprises

Offense: - Hoping Mayes, incoming Leigh or Tchio get a shot at starting OG to improve athleticism by playoffs, - Hope Rayburn keeps up progress demonstrated at Spring Camp, - TE looks strong with Allen and Galloway both getting heavy reps, - Projecting Ngata and EJ at WR with Ladson (in Martavis role) also pulling heavy reps, - As much or more for J. Ross, than team & fans, hope this young man is feeling healthy and strong, - RB is a coin flip. RB's will produce bigger than 2020 with blocking. - DJ should be healthy. Air DJ! Spin it!
Defense: - Murphy and 4-man competition at other DE, - Bresee and Davis. The Bruise Brothers are back in 2021! - How much of a factor will Bentley & Trotter be by playoffs? Expect to see them grow into heavy reps, - Booth, Davis & Greene at CB. Jr's and Sr's have been passed by, - Carter, Mukuba, Wiggins & Mickens are real wild cards and will compete.
Special Teams: - Hope to see Swinney open up ST play in 2021. Shipley may be a big addition at KR and/or PR.
Go Tigers!

Here’s what I noticed:
RB: Will Shipley at #3 is huge
WR: Insane depth
OL: Inexperienced depth, lots of talent
DE: Insane depth
DT: Inexperienced depth, lots of talent
LB: Vonta Bentley secured the #2 spot over Maguire
CB: Fred Davis passing Sheridan Jones is interesting

Will Shipley is going to end up with the 1st string RB position if he continues to grow by week 4 or 5.
Our OL by mid season will have two viable starting lines that are very good & we will be light years ahead of where we were last season.

Idk, if we get Good Lyn J
Jul 21, 2021, 9:36 AM

then Shipley won't ever start. There were times when Travis would come out and the run game wouldn't miss a beat if Lyn-J was feeling it. Also Kobe Pace is gonna BALL. I loved how he ran in the spring game and he's got the thickest frame we've seen at the position since Adam Choice, and he's faster than Choice.
It'll be interesting to see who emerges now that the best RB in ACC history is gone, but the talent is absolutely there.

This.
I swear Kobe Pace is being overlooked on half the posts I see referring to the RBs. KP is the dude to beat IMO.
I LOVE the depth at RB because Mafah and Shipley have high upside but I have low expectations for them their first year.
Not sold on them snatching the starting spot as soon as some folks think due to playbook, pass blocking, etc
Excited to see them get some carries like everyone else though!

2021: One 5*, three 4* 2020: Four 4*, two 3* 2019: One 4*, two 3* 2018: One 5*, one 3*
So over the last four classes:
5* - Two 4* - Eight 3* - Five
Two 4* already for 2022.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with our OL recruiting.

Henry and Murphy will be starting on opposite ends. I don't see having them on the same side. Should just be a 4 man rotation of Henry/XT and Murphy/Foster with Mascol on either side.

Seems silly to have Mickens, who we know really nothing about instead of Nolan Turner. I also like Bentley, but Spector is very good and incredibly consistent. Turner and Spector will start and they've earned and solidified their spots.

Where is Capehart?
Jul 21, 2021, 1:20 PM
|
|
I'll start with defense.
Capehart seems to be missing. That concerns me.
Why is KJ listed on the same side as Murphy? Those two might be our best outside pass rushers. Put one on each end.
We are stacked at LB. By the end of the season, it may be our 2nd strongest position group (after D-line). I think Barrett Carter is every bit as athletic as Simpson.
Malcolm Greene is going to be all OVER the place. I'm excited to watch him develop.
At CB, with Booth and Davis (followed by Greene and Goodrich), we should be just fine.
Safety is far and away (by a country mile) my biggest concern on defense. The good thing is a great pass rush can cover up safety deficiencies.
On offense,
I'm taking a "wait and see" view on the O-line. It will clearly be better than last year. How much is the question.
I have high hopes for Shipley, but seeing him listed 3rd at RB so soon completely blows my mind. However, he has speed and is probably the best receiver of the group. In Spiller I trust.
We are loaded at receiver but I don't feel comfortable because so many guys still have so much to prove. I can see the group being anywhere from OK to great. Hopefully Ngata and Ladson finally stay healthy and deliver the goods.
I don't expect much from the TEs at all.
Lastly, at QB, it all rides on DJ.

Galloway should be a factor unless he’s not schemed for.
OL concerns me the most. Not even close. Last year was the worst OL we’ve seen in recent memory. I’m having a hard time believing we will be better. I REALLY hope I’m dead wrong.
And obviously if DJ goes down, so does the season…in an embarrassing way.

So Taisun Phommachanh, torn achilles and all, is still our backup QB? I understand there is going to be a huge drop off after DJ but why list someone, who is not even available, on the depth chart. Or, am I missing something, and he is expected to be good to go by September? Or is this Dabo's way of acknowledging where he will be when he is able to return?

This came from the Clemson media guide so it may be a nod to Phommachanh being the backup based on his spring performance until the spring game injury. First updated depth chart with that situation will probably come after the Georgia game.
