Wow, disappointing. He was the starter next year! It's very rare that brownell has a returning starter transfer.

I have always really liked Dawes. I'm wondering if brownell has something up his sleeve? I did find it odd that he was looking at so many PGs in the portal. I really hope we get somebody really good.

Not sure about your comment about returning starters leaving being rare.
Last year, starting guard and forward moving into starting role.
Now, this year - 2 starters (yes I consider both as starters due to the minutes and games they started).

Considering the portal has only been around 2 or so years and this makes several starters leaving you're leaving I'm not sure what's surprising about I think about it. As for cards I'm Not sure if Brad is holding any of them much less up his sleeve. I'm going to go out on a limb and say next year is really bad is really bad. Maybe that's what it's going to have to take. Bullet to the head!

This is seriously concerning! Unless there is some background info we do not have about a family issue or health issue, starters do not transfer. Players transfer to get more playing time. What is going on in the program, what is wrong here? This is yet another red flag for the Brad Brownell era.

Apr 6, 2022, 12:05 PM

Clemson actually had some success from the late 70s through the early 90s. And the ACC was harder then and it was harder to get into the NCAA tourney.

It’s way past time for Brad Brownell to be gone and when you start losing starters to the portal the coach has lost the program.

Well, this one hurts. Team was much better whenever he was involved offensively. While Nick Honor's loss shouldn't affect things, Dawes is an ACC-caliber player and has experience that will be tough to replace off the bat. There better be some talented kids coming in to take those minutes.

This is why you can't make a decision to keep a coach based on the talent he has coming back. The portal makes it very difficult to manage a roster. Hopefully BB can improve the talent level and use the portal to his advantage.

CBB has always used the portal in a positive way. Almost every player he has taken out of the portal has been a contributor. I noticed none of y’all talked about Tyson staying. Doesn’t fit you’re lame narrative. Dawes was way to streaky on the offensive end and a liability on the defensive end. All of y’all blamed him for the loss to Virginia Tech. What do you expect when your coach comes out after losing games and reports to the press that his guards are too small, get man-handled defensively and are directly responsible for defensive breakdowns that cost them games. Even if its true, and I believe that it was, it does nothing to instill confidence or bring us closer to victories. That's on Brownell to coach better and recruit bigger guards. You don't blame a kid for being the size he is. I still don't understand this transfer however. Dawes would continue to start with Hunter at the other guard. I wouldn't be surprised if Holloway is already recruiting other people's roster for Seton Hall.

Re: TNET: Clemson guard enters transfer portal

[2]
Apr 5, 2022, 11:18 PM

The Brownell detractors have expressed more concern about the players’ actual interests in this thread that at any other time this year (by my reckoning).

Too bad it’s all artificial because it’s couched in the context of how bad it must be to play for an unpopular coach.

Some thoughts:
1) Grownups can consider multiple thoughts and feelings at the same time. Al-Amir Dawes is a grownup. He can love Coach Brownell and yet still consider playing for Coach Holloway to be an incomparable opportunity.

2) Coach Brownell is responsible for his roster, and he will be responsible for the results of his roster management next year. Losing experienced players doesn’t bode well, but Coach B doesn’t deserve to be fired any more today than he did last week. I’m not trying to shut anyone up—this is the only time of year that I fully support having this conversation. Just that losing another player doesn’t change our record for 22-23: it’s still 0-0.

3) Graham Neff isn’t Dan Radokovich. If the letters they sent out sound identical, don’t be confused. It was DRad who failed to follow up as promised, not Neff. Give Neff the benefit of the doubt until the end of the next season, and support your coach in the meantime.

4) Seriously: the Clemson Tigers are the players, not the disappointing coaches, admin or loud mouthed fans. Some of you suddenly care about the players—who are otherwise anonymous to you—only when you can use their decisions to show up Brownell. Don’t use these young men as your tools because you can’t make a convincing case on your own.

It’s looking like another tough year ahead, but Hubert Davis showed that a team can blow a 25-point lead and still be a championship contender. Who knew?

flag link

I hate the UNCheaters, but they proved how good coaching

Apr 5, 2022, 11:54 PM

and hard work can greatly improve a team from January to March. When we played them mid-season, they weren't a bit better than us at that point, and while we did improve late in the year, no where near as much as UNCheat did! And you watch...UNCheat, in spite of finishing runner-up in the tourney, will probably have one or two players enter the portal also. There are few teams that don't!

Bad guess.

"A" student but got myself underemployed. After 25 years of being held back economically by underachieving coworkers I'm now self-employed and work alone.

I understand the morass of low expectations. I also understand that raising expectations requires more planning than simply firing people. Raising expectations begins with broadening the foundation. I don't endorse much of anything that USC does, but they sure got that part right: when they joined the SEC they broadened their outreach into every county in SC, including the ones where Clemson already had established a community presence.

Did you completely leave out the word "child's" in your pathetic put-down?

Don't blame me for a lack of understanding when the blame lies on your poor ability to communicate.

Middle-management is my child's ceiling, while you're the one who can't proofread and has no self-awareness.

Are you sure you're a Tiger alum?

I freely admit I am not. Been following and attending games when I can since the days of Tree and Stan Rome because the elitist snobs in Columbia were dumber than the farmers they loved to insult.

Turns out some Tiger alums are pretentious snobs, too.

Meanwhile, don't blame me for the pathetic state of your men's BB program. I'm just trying to keep you from firing good mediocrity and replacing it with bad mediocrity.

I hate hearing the Chicken-lovers brag. Brownell has prevented that by owning Frank Martin recently. But now that Martin's mediocrity is gone, BB had better step it up.

Meanwhile all you pretentious loudmouth fans better have a plan to help whoever your men's BB coach is, or you're going to be having this same conversation again in 5 years.

flag link

Re: TNET: Clemson guard enters transfer portal

Apr 8, 2022, 9:05 AM

You are exhibit "C" in this tired, stupid argument. It's not my responsibility to determine the next coach or to better equip the existing coach. That's Neff's responsibility.

It's my right as a fan to expect better than a dozen mediocre years and complete lack of tangible progress.

It's the purpose of team-related message boards to discuss that frustration, and it's acceptable (and expected) for fans to want better results.

None of that means that I "better have a plan to help" the next coach. I can't help him anymore than I can help any other coach, Brownell included.

By the way, there is no difference in "good mediocrity" and "bad mediocrity". Accepting mediocrity is weak. Clemson Men are not weak. And, saying things like "your men's BB program" really outs you. You are not a real fan

Re: TNET: Clemson guard enters transfer portal

[1]
Apr 9, 2022, 12:43 AM

Wow, you don't read with much comprehension, do you?

Obviously your response is a face-saving device rather than a thoughtful response, so let me make this easy for you.

A) I specified in my earlier comment that following the season is when good, loyal fans appropriately discuss whether or not we are in favor of keeping the coach. For years Tiger fans have gone straight to "Fire Brownell!" at the first moment of frustration during the season. That is diminishing to any fan base. Clemson fans largely are classy individuals, so the amount of frustration expressed is only a fraction of what is felt. I get that.

But it's classless to do that when team support can still make a difference, and even worse to browbeat fans who refuse to agree--during the season.

Yes, I'm taking cheap shots at the classless ones who take cheap shots at the rest of us if we don't bail on the team and coach mid-season.

2) "good mediocrity" follows the rules and keeps Clemson's reputation where its administration has prioritized over the last quarter century. Apparently you are too young and inexperienced to remember what it was like to be presumed to be cheating just because you won--with a history of chronic cheating.

The NCAA has become a toothless tiger, but let Clemson get caught cheating again and the world will find out how much authority they still have, because they will throw the book at chronic cheaters who aren't afforded the same protection as the blue bloods.

And even though we all know Dabo runs a clean program, only 4 years ago we had 20% of tested players test positive for a banned substance just before a national championship game. Other people haven't forgotten.

"Bad mediocrity" gets you the same results you're getting now but without the class. With NCAA investigations. With poor graduation rates. With players getting in trouble and not representing the Clemson brand favorably. Without Coach K congratulating your team or coach for their sportsmanship even if it's done with condescension. With players quitting or leaving en masse rather than as individuals (that's a French term, so you'll need to look it up.)

3) I didn't "out" anything. I told you I'm not an alum, so it's not my IPTAY money that Neff is counting on. But chances are fair that I've spent more on Clemson tickets, and yelled more at games, than you have.

I specified "your team" because apparently you are one of the Neanderthals who believes that your team--and your attitude toward it--are a reflection of who you are. They don't have a right to be whatever they really are, nor do you have any obligation to help them become successful. You just expect excellence because you're you.

If you're such a "not weak" Clemson man, and you are personally offended by the mediocre basketball coach, are you doing anything about it besides complaining on a message board?

Because, to me, that's the epitome of "being weak."

You can pretend to be superior to me, but you're all talk no action. Please grow up, Clemson man, before you have kids that you demand excellence from without doing anything to help them produce it.

Fitting that you and JK think this self-aggrandizing, purely rhetorical nonsense is actually some kind of “own”.

Exactly. Not even worth any more time to respond to the pile of junk he typed.

That’s fine.

I’ll even throw in a complimentary TU for you as compensation for NOT saving face this time.

Truth is, I felt demeaned in typing it, but you had been such a doofus that you needed to read it—whether you respond or not.

Every man needs to clean the toilet once in a while. You can use it as a learning experience or as a motivational one, I don’t care, so long as you take your turn like the rest of us.
