Time for the ACC members to engage in honest discussion
Mar 23, 2017, 3:24 PM
|

about the commitment of all members to maintain competitive programs in all sports.
Boston College is an excellent private academic institution and from that standpoint holds its own amongst conference members.
But the latest fiasco with their facilities--this time baseball--serves to point out that BC has been getting a full share in football and basketball--the 2 largest moneymakers--but contributing little towards earning any of the NCAA shares they've received over the years since they joined. Their baseball facilities were the worst when they entered the league and from all reports have had little improvement. Their football stadium reminds one of Wake's PRIOR to the Deacons capitol improvements. Never been in BC's basketball facility, but it doesn't look like much on tv and even Clemson and GaTech have spent zillions upgrading their basketball venues.
The ACC needs to advise the Boston College athletic director to get with the program and start blanket upgrades and at least make an effort like the rest of the ACC or risk a fate similar to that of Temple a few years ago...hockey don't bring in much dough.

Meh, I'm more concerned that Notre Dame joins as a full member.

conference also. College Sports are king in the South. It's just not the same up north. Every person I've ever talked to that moves to the South always , I mean always, ask me why is everybody Clemson and Carolina down here? They will mention the Charlotte and Atlanta teams and I tell them all the same thing. It's the way it's always been and always will be. There is no passion anywhere close to college fans in the south as it is in the north

Adding BC was a terrible decision....

Don't get me wrong, it's a great place to visit every other year, but the reality is, they bring very little if anything to the conference dinner table.
The whole expanding the TV market footprint was total BS. BC got in because Swofford's son worked for the university at the time of the expansion. The same son who now works for Raycom which is why Swofford was so adamant about the league maintaining its relationship with Raycom when it came time to renegotiate the conference TV deal with ESPN.
No one in New England gives a rats rump about collegiate athletics. Boston is a pro sports market and they only care about the Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics and the Bruins.

ACC presidents voted BC in as well as approved the Raycom deal. You seem to believe all posts on Tigernet.
BC was very good in football and basketball when they first got in. Sad, they are so bad now.

When they joined the ACC, they had a football program ranked in the top 25, and had been to a bowl game the previous six years in a row. Their basketball program was in the NCAA Tournament the four years in a row prior to joining the ACC. It's easy to bash the decision now, but at the time it made a lot of sense.

Is that not Swoffords job?? I like you post. I agree that every ACC school should have certain standards they must meet to remain an ACC school.
This includes maintaining or upgrading academic, student living facilities and excellent athletic facilities. ACC schools should be required to competition goals, fund raising goals for athletics, and certain ethics and standards of integrity for student athletes.
North Carolina is an embarrassment to the ACC because of their academic and athletic scandals.
We should strive to be the best conference in college sports. And These standards need to include academic standards, graduation rates for athletes, and overall the universities/colleges she have standards to meet as well.
IMO Clemson University is the ACC Standard for academic integrity, ethical guidelines for athletics and very focused taking steps improve student life on and off campus.
Maybe Mr. Swofford should get off his butt and get the ACC moving forward. Select 2 or 3 members from each school to determine fair equitable guidelines, standards, expectations and penalties for failure for those schools that fail to comply. The ACC has authority over a lot of outstanding issues. Now take some action.

Duke's facilities are just as bad as BC's

Cameron Indoor is a dump. They're just lucky to have the Durham Bulls stadium to use for baseball. Their on-campus baseball stadium is basically a mid-level high school field.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about and make yourself look foolish when running your mouth.
Cameron is one of the Meccas of College Basketball and only a total idiot would consider the arena a dump.
Duke just spent $250 on athletics facilities upgrades
Duke spent almost $25MM on Cameron $100MM on Wallace Wade
Another $22 on athletic facilities for weight training, films, medicine, and meetings. Also being built is a new track stadium, upgrades to the baseball field, an Olympic size swimming facility, a new weight room, a new tutoring resource lab, new team store, a plaza connecting all the facilities and a state of art computer and multi media room for press and student learning. total almost $100 in athletic investments.
This place sure looks like a dump to me

Sometimes people should keep their mouth shut and let people think they are an idiot rather than saying stupid and remove all doubt.
Cameron is a dump, perhaps one of the dumbest things ever posted here and that is saying something.

That's it?
Also, I'm not sure who Cameron or Wallace Wade are, but that's pretty crazy to give them $25's and $100's worth of M&Ms. That much sugar will make your teeth rot.

Took me an entire half time to get a Chic-Fila sandwich last time I was there. Wallace Wade is OK. Can't speak much about Cameron Indoor. They put the TV media in a match box though.

Duke plays almost all baseball at their on campus facility

It doesn't have much going for it for sure. It has an expensive but maintenance free 100% turf playing surface (which I strongly dislike) and the stands will hold 1,000 fans tops.
But, Cameron is a venerable old edifice that may not be much to look at, but it has tons of tradition and appeals to sports fans in the same way as Wrigley Field and Fenway Park.
The basketball player amenities, locker rooms, practice facilities and coaches offices at Duke are first rate.

I'm not like the fans who say they pull for the conference teams. We can't make the basketball schools improve their football programs. They can't make us improve our basketball program. I pull for my Tigers and want them to be the best they can be in every sport. Any national championship that we win is ours and not the ACCs.

the larger problem is that NCAA baseball season
Mar 23, 2017, 10:35 PM
|
|
starts about 1.5 months too early. Why in the HAIL are we playing baseball on Valentine's Day ANYWHERE? Baseball isn't meant to be played in 35-40 degree weather, dodging snow and frost.
Start the season at a rational time - on April 1 like MLB does. Play Omaha in mid-August instead of end of June. Would give the fans something to enjoy in July and August. The fact that the season would force the players to play through the summer doesn't matter - they already play through half the summer anyways, as graduation is in early May. If they make Omaha, they have almost 2 more months of games to play after Spring Semester is done.

Never happen
MLB wants their draft early enough to get a half season out of the players in Rookie Ball.
