Clowney vs. Gaines
Dec 19, 2012, 9:48 AM
|
|
Wanted to get thoughts on this...
After looking at Clowney's stats this past year vs. Gaines Adams his last year at Clemson, they're not too far off from being the same. Clowney had 5 more tackles for loss(21.5 to 16.5)and .5 a sack more(13 to 12.5). Gaines had 3 Fumble recovery's to Clowney's 0 and they tied at 2 on Forced fumbles.
The media gave Gaines some love but not a breath of Heisman mention like Clowney. E$ecPN love?
Yes I know Clemson was 8-5 in 2006 as well.

Clowney's a sophomore. That's probably the biggest difference.

I was referring to this past season for Clowney. He finished 6th overall in Heisman voting and Gaines wasn't in top 10 in '06.

Hype coming out of high school + playing in the SEC I guess. And like you said, Clemson was 8-5 whereas SCAR is a top 10 team.

ACC this year has nothing to do with it.

Clemson played two ranked teams in 2006. One of them, Florida St., finished 7-6.
South Carolina this year has played four teams that have finished in the Top 15.

We beat a WF team that finished 11-3 and won the ACC

Finished #18
Lost in double OT to BC (Finished #20) with Matt Ryan. Finished 10-3.
Lost actually pretty badly to #19 VT that finished 10-3. Yes we lost but gaines still played against them.

Clowney has had exposure since he was in high school and has not disappointed in college. He was SEC freshman defensive player of the year and freshman all american. This year he was unanimous all american and SEC defensive player of the year.
If Gaines had a three year run of production and publicity like Clowney has had he would have most likely received more recognition in the Heisman voting.

I agree! Adams was a very good player but he was no where close to being as dominant as JC. There's only been a few DEs like him in college. I think Julius Peppers was one & Jevon Kearse. only to name a few examples
