Clowney vs. Gaines

Dec 19, 2012, 9:48 AM

Wanted to get thoughts on this...

After looking at Clowney's stats this past year vs. Gaines Adams his last year at Clemson, they're not too far off from being the same.
Clowney had 5 more tackles for loss(21.5 to 16.5)and .5 a sack more(13 to 12.5).
Gaines had 3 Fumble recovery's to Clowney's 0 and they tied at 2 on Forced fumbles.

The media gave Gaines some love but not a breath of Heisman mention like Clowney. E$ecPN love?

Yes I know Clemson was 8-5 in 2006 as well.

Clowney's a sophomore. That's probably the biggest difference.

I was referring to this past season for Clowney. He finished 6th overall in Heisman voting and Gaines wasn't in top 10 in '06.

Hype coming out of high school + playing in the SEC I guess. And like you said, Clemson was 8-5 whereas SCAR is a top 10 team.

Also the level and profile of competition.***

Give me a break the ACC hasn't been this bad EVER.

Dec 19, 2012, 10:35 AM

Definitely not when Gaines was playing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ACC this year has nothing to do with it.

Dec 19, 2012, 10:41 AM

Clemson played two ranked teams in 2006. One of them, Florida St., finished 7-6.

South Carolina this year has played four teams that have finished in the Top 15.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We beat a WF team that finished 11-3 and won the ACC

Dec 19, 2012, 10:50 AM

Finished #18

Lost in double OT to BC (Finished #20) with Matt Ryan. Finished 10-3.

Lost actually pretty badly to #19 VT that finished 10-3. Yes we lost but gaines still played against them.

Now don't confuse the SEC boy with facts

Coots how many times did you win the weak ACC when you were in it???????????????

Dang you have a losing record to Duke

Clowney has had exposure since he was in high school and has not disappointed in college. He was SEC freshman defensive player of the year and freshman all american. This year he was unanimous all american and SEC defensive player of the year.

If Gaines had a three year run of production and publicity like Clowney has had he would have most likely received more recognition in the Heisman voting.

Just proves the theory is actually fact***

Clowney is the most dominating defensive player since...

Dec 19, 2012, 10:30 AM

Jevon Kearse. End of story.

I agree!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

there is no comparison to be made...JC is a supreme talent

Dec 19, 2012, 10:32 AM

I loved Gaines Adams...but he was no JC

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: there is no comparison to be made...JC is a supreme talent

Dec 19, 2012, 11:30 AM

I agree! Adams was a very good player but he was no where close to being as dominant as JC. There's only been a few DEs like him in college. I think Julius Peppers was one & Jevon Kearse. only to name a few examples

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're right: Clowney was not a Unanimous All-American***

Sophomore, high profile recruit, and likely top pick in the draft

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clowney is at a whole different level. He lines up all

Dec 20, 2012, 7:43 AM

over the field and his quickness and speed make him unblockable at times.

He's a 6'6" Clay Matthews.
