The Null Hypothesis and Wes Goodwin

We should consider the possibility that all the heresay information about Goodwin is just noise and that he is not going anywhere. We'll know when we know, but as of right now he is next season's DC.
Keep in mind concerning the rumors that if BV wants Goodwin there is a proven mastermind of defense that thinks he is good enough to move his program forward. OU wants to win and they will be looking to put in the best person they can get. So perhaps BV does not see Goodwin as the problem with Clemson's D.

With the talent we had on this team on the Defensive side of the ball, we shouldn't have lost the games we did. Yes the offense failed at times, but look at these stats and tell me there isn't a problem.
2022 Rush Defense: 3.2 yds/carry 102.9 rush yds/g
2023 Rush Defense 3.8 yds/carry 114.6 rush yds/g
2024 4.7 yds/carry 160.6 rush yds/g

The only game we should have lost during the regular season is to UGA. The offensive looked like the same offense of years past. So there was no real hope of winning that game even if the defense didn't implode in the 2nd half.

Wes Goodwin is an excellent Defensive Analyst. I think that is the role BV has in mind for him.

there's a few things about Wes we should be honest about...

The first is that a lot of the flak he catches is because he was promoted from within same time as Streeter which coincided with our downturn as a program. So the well is poisoned to some degree.
Secondly: he's had really good defenses while he's been here. I can't find the graph but his defenses were equivalent to BV's last few with this year being an obvious outlier/downturn. Given how bad our offenses were during that time, you can argue that without Wes' VERY good defenses we would have fallen a lot further than we did.
So the salient question about Wes is this: was this year an outlier due to injury/schedule difficulty/whatever else you think of and next year we snap back to the type of defense we've had? Or will the decline continue if Wes stays on?
No one really knows, but if Dabo can't get a slam dunk hire (Think Matt Luke for O-line), then it would not surprise me if he retains Wes. But the defense would need to do that whole 'snapping back' thing next year.

He could make no adjustments during the game. What you saw in the first half, you also saw it in the second. However, we generally played worse in the second half.

Wes made a huge adjustment in the 2nd half of the usc game by taking out his best tackler on the team. LMAO

Goodwins adjustment vs TX in 2nd half was very impressive

Actually, his in-game adjustment vs TX was impressive.
In 2nd half, TX had one legit score … a FG.
Detailed replays of TX’s mid 4th Qtr 77 yard run revealed a ridiculous no-call holding by the TX guard in Sammy Brown; Sammy had that gap and would have crushed the TX RB in a head on collision (Sammy was bigger than the TX RB and is undoubtedly stronger). The replay showed the TX guard holding Sammy in an embrace like an octopus hugging a crab.
Of course the TX RB had an unobstructed hole to run through.
Goodwin’s second half D, while not forcing but one punt, earned a few 4th down stops.
TX has a great offense. Allowing only 3 legitimate points to TX while TX was doing everything they could do to move the ball and to retain possession of the ball was impressive D by Goodwin.
Also, TX got the opening KO of the second half.

The D got absolutely wrecked in in 2nd half.

The only thing saved Texas from putting up 50 was Sark's decision to start throwing it. We had no plan to stop the run, and if we did the plan was awful. Their backup RB's ran on us at will, the bad call on the 77 yard play is a moot point because they would have just ran eight plays for 10 yards each. UGA stacked the box and forced Ewer's to throw, while we were playing two deep coverage the whole game with the linebackers playing 6 yards of the ball. He made no discernable adjustments that I could see.

Requires a guy who knows how/when to take chances and motivate players into being better than they really are at critical moments. IMO that’s the difference between Wes and BV. Wes doesn’t have it. We lost games that we had won. Yes there is blame on the offense in all those games too, EXCEPT TX is all on the D. Wes has been exposed, he can’t get us to the elite level, he can’t speak at a press conference, he’s just not a winner. Time to move on, everyone knows it.

Two things:
#1) BV wanted him from day 1 as an analyst---NOT his defensive coordinator.
#2) "IF" Goodwin was staying, then why does Dabo decline to confirm this when given the chance??

I think this was decided a while ago. It would explain why so many defensive commits took off, which hopefully, we can address through the portal. This defense had the opportunity to be in the top ten if not for busted plays and a lack of effective second-half adjustments. Take away five missed tackles in the Texas game, and we win easily. The uGA game was also another great example, as was SC, when we played lights out in the first half, only to be taken apart in the second.

I think we should give Wes at least 11 more seasons to come around.

That kind of patience paid off for basketball, at least for one season. Besides, we haven't been on a 3-year slide like many like to claim - we were Top 10 in yards and efficiency in 2023 but doomed by higher scoring due to TO's and other O issues.

Those of us who look at the players we had and the number of NFL Draft picks we have, agree with the idea that Wes is not the problem with the defense.

I don't doubt he has a keen mind for game planning.
It is his ability to relate that plan to players (coaching) and get results on the field that's in question.
I find it hard to believe that we would have had the retention rate on defense that we did if changes aren't on the way.

We've assumed our opinions are held in esteem by everyone. Thinking that others might want Wes seems ridiculous given that we consider our season a total disaster. Not all of us feel that way, btw.
