If I was the HC, and the helmet swinger that hit his teammate in the head with a helmet apologized and was remorseful he would be running until his tongue was dragging. If not, he would be sitting at home waiting for the portal to call.

Exactly. They could go to the doghouse for pushing, shoving and even throwing punches, but hitting someone with a helmet will get you instantly kicked off the team.

is a terrible look for this guy. The intent of that helmet swing was to put the other guy down, and succeeded.
Having played team sports, I've seen a lot and something like this can absolutely not be tolerated at the collegiate level. Who knows where that frustration comes from but in a moment he could have easily changed the lives of himself and the guy he hit forever, and not in a good way.

Full stop, a crime was committed. If he did that out in the wild he'd be in jail. Hopefully he gets charged...zero place for that type of stuff.

If happens on city street, yes assault. In practice facility/situation, it comes down to those involved and those who are seen as authority.
