You're an officially old Clemson fan when you remember

1) No upper decks 2) Concessions with two drink choices (coke and sprite) and two "food" choices (hot dogs and candy) 3) Clemson's first night game - boom lights brought in on trucks 5) Five home games was a big deal

When in high school you got in for .50 cents. Also remember band days with all the high schools at half time?

I think Band Day in current times is different
Apr 14, 2015, 7:51 AM
|
|
Band Day was brought back with Dr. Spede - it did not happen at all in the 90's. But if I'm reading the original Band Day mention correctly, when it was first a "thing" the entire HS marching band(s) would be on the field. Now it is just individual band members who are doing it on their own time.

I remember baseball being played where the tennis courts are now....a homerun went onto Hwy 93! Peanuts and a Coke was 50cents...
I remember praying that HS tickets would be on sale so I could go to a football game....
I totally agree that Tigerama needs to go back to the Stadium....there was nothing like it....
I remember basketball being played in Fike.....and I remember my first game in Littlejohn...(the second actual game)...when Pete Maravich played for LSU....I also remember Pete around town....as a kid......
I remember a time when every Clemson fan watched the NFL on Sundays to watch Charlie Waters play for the Dallas Cowboys...

I was at that game, 1967. NC State came to town ranked # 3 (I think) that week. State's defense was called the "white shoe defense ". The tigers came out for warm ups in their regular black shoes, which was normal for that era. Then when the tigers came down the hill , they all were wearing orange shoes, and the fans went crazy ! Our Clemson Tigers won that game 14-6, allowing State only 2 field goals. Go Tigers !!!

PC game was sometimes a night game, also the Miss. St. game Jerry Clower played in. Would'nt bet the ranch, but I saw some games in the late 40's and early 50's at night.

I really don't feel all that old, but if you say I'm old if I remember no upper decks, then I guess I'm OLD. My first Clemson FB game was November 24, 1962, 3 days before my 10th birthday!!!

When you can remember losing to Alabama , 13 - 10 in 1966 or 67. We missed two FGs which could have given us a win over "the Bear." I attended my first Tiger game in 1959 and I believe we beat Wake.

The '59 Wake game was my first. We scored in the last minute or so to beat future 4 time Pro Bowler Norm Snead 33-31.

Thanks for the note on Wake in 1959. This was likely my first Clemson home game, but sadly I can't verify it as my late father took me . I was all of six years old. All of my best early memories of Clemson involved games with my dad. He was class of 1944 and an early IPTAY donor.
Go Tigers!

Guess I'm really old as I can remember all those things. Also senior day when the seniors thought they had to destroy the college. Can remember riding my motorcycle up & down both the hills at the valley. Never got caught. Good ole days.

Sliding down the hill on flattened cardboard boxes. After the game, running up to the players asking them for their chin straps so you could use them playing Mite/Midget football in Seneca.

Students were allowed on the field before the game to form a human tunnel at the foot of the hill. Students could still purchase decent tickets for their parents the week of the game

Two big white oaks up there. Paid .50 to get in on a "high school" ticket. (I was not in HS yet) Most of the cheers had words in them that I would get my mouth washed out for using at home.(but got by with using in cheers for the Tigers) A lot of the students wore ties because they got out of Saturday a.m. classes (ties mandatory) and went straight to the game. Ladies wore hats.....really.

When they celebrated an undefeated home season with souvenir Cokes in 1974. Overall record 7-4. Now a 7-4 season might get Dabo on the hot seat!

1.Seeing my first game looking through the fence at Riggs field in 1940.
2. Marching into the stadium.
3.Beating the drum 24 hours before Big Thursday.
4.Gator Pharr preaching the chickens funeral before the S. C. game.
5. All cheerleaders were boys(cadets).
6. The undefeated 1948 season.
7. Architect students painted bed sheets showing the tiger engaging the opponent;s mascot in comical and "suggestive" ways. One example was the tiger clawing a beautiful lady with a caption saying " I am torn to PC's" before a game with PC. The lsit could go on and on! Not sure anyone can beat my list.

some of the silly, cheap souvenirs sold back in the day. I know - I sold a few. Some guy would drive up in a big truck game morning early, and his team would download 'em and us kids would sell them at the little tables. We sold visors for fifty cents on the sunny days.

Katherine's Kitchen was the best country ham biscuits.
Eating at "The Old House" in Walhalla. Family style and grits came with everything.
Singing "Hang down your head Bill Dooley" to UNC in '74 after destroying them just a day or two after they had accepted a bid to the Gator (I think) Bowl.
Miller for $6.80/case and Miller Lite for $7.20/case at Rabbits in Pendleton.
The Big Indian pinball at Macs.
My first concert was The Temptations in Littlejohn. My older brother was on the Central Dance Association so free tickets. I was still in Jr. High at the time.
Running Parlay cards for a bookie/bartender at Lamars. Always drank free there.
Tigerama ending with the grand finale and Tigers spelled out in fireworks.

The players walked down the street to the Hill. Freshmen wearing rat caps. The Hill had trees and was mostly kids playing. It was actually safe to let your child play there during the game unsupervised.

ending at 4 and being home in Gastonia about 6:30. Traffic was not so bad then. More people per car meant less cars for 43,451 capacity.
And I remember meeting Coach Howard on Sunday am after a game at the Holiday Inn on 123 at the Lake.
