Got his offense from Chad Morris who got his offense fron Gus Malzan. My how the world goes around. Too bad We gave up that offense. Life is Eb and Flow. The waves roll in and they roll back out. The point for all of you that think everyone is a coot but yourself is we should have never given up that offense. That offense helped recruit Higgins Ross Watkins Lawrence and Watson.

At one time we had something different but now we do what the vast majority of everyone else does. I’ve seen very little creativity from Streeter and Wes has greatly underperformed with the best defensive talent in all college football.

He’s an analyst at South Florida…
Chad Morris personally recruited Deshaun….but some of the other players on the list of recruits the OP gave had nothing to do with Chad Morris….
We won exactly zero championships running Chad Morris’ offense…
Gimmicks are great talent equalizers but not often what’s needed to win a championship….

We have much more talent, yet our offense isn’t as good. How do you rationalize that, other than by acknowledging that our offensive coaching is lacking.

How many championships does Tennessee have in the last 100+ years?
Well the Volunteers have exactly 2 National Titles in the history of college football. (Like everyone in the SEC, the Vols claim more titles than they have earned. I think the Vols claim 6 titles but most of them are fake.)

That Tenn coach was the QB for Mike leach, who was his QB coach at Oklahoma. Alot of the pass plays are Mike's. Saw leach saying josh didn't run the plays as well as hooker. Classic leach

Cute but never boring. I really loved seeing how many offensive plays we could run and watching the opposition defense drop from exhaustion. Also, after years of bubble screens it sure was fun.

Can you look at any off cord after just a game and say that was a bad call. Sure. I can after each of our games pick out a play and say Street that was a bad call. Sure that was a bad call by Morris because it did not work. He was not conservative in his calls and because of that he is going to make some bonehead ones. During our offense on the field at that time the fans were on their feet most of the time much more involved

Scored about 7 plays later. Received the kickoff to start the second half took it down for a score and ended up beating them maybe 41-28, somhting like that ..

Agree he did some dumb things but we won games by out scoring teams. Our good defensive teams came later. Also under Chad we had very poor O lines he had to deal with. It was his high powered offenses that put on the map and led to recruiting that allowed later success,

Briles got his offense from Chad Morris?
Nov 2, 2022, 7:34 PM
|
|
That seems unlikely.
Briles supposedly ran his spread offense as far back as the 90s at Stephenville HS. Morris also coached at Stephenville HS but not until 2003. After a losing season in 2003 he reached out to Gus Malzahn and eventually built his offense around what he learned from Gus. So that wasn't until at least 2004. And I think Briles' version is different. Morris preferred Malzahns "smash mouth" spread though he was never really able to implement the smash mouth version at Clemson.

Clemson doesn't have the wide receivers it used to have. The receivers made his offense work. People also figured out how to defend it. Tennessee has made changes to it. Gus also had problems with it at Auburn getting him fired. Offenses always have to be evolving or defenses will figure them out.

That offense presents a great risk.
Nov 3, 2022, 5:16 AM
|
|
When we faced a top shelf defense we ended up with so much less time of possession our defense wore down as if we had no depth. Three and outs were all too common. That offense will torture those who have undisciplined players and/or players who easily lose focus but it posed so much risk it had to be dismissed as we collected better talent and developed their skills.
It's a gimmick offense which was a positive step toward what we have now. It couldn't be the bread and butter it appears to be. Fortunately, we got in and out of it before it caught on.
I suspect UGA has a better defense than UT has seen this year and that's why I'm saying UGA will win.

How many Championships have been won by offenses like that?
Nov 3, 2022, 11:32 AM
|
|
LSU is the only team I can think of that has won a Championship in the last few years with an ultra-flashy offense. Our championship teams were good at offense, but GREAT at defense (especially 2018). Bamas championship teams were good at offense, but GREAT at defense. Georgia last year was fair at offense, but OUTSTANDING at defense. Ohio State back when they won was good at offense, but GREAT at defense.
There have been 8 National Champions in the Playoff era. ONE of them had a better offensive unit than their defensive unit. Could Tennessee be the 2nd? Maybe. But Tennessee also could me among the list of many many teams who haven't won in the conference championships and playoffs where defensive teams often shut great offenses down.

Uh...you have many things wrong there. Art Briles didn't get anything from Chad. He'd been running his version of the spread first at the HS level and then at Houston and Baylor for more than a decade before Chad was anything other than a high school football coach. Also his scheme is not the same as Chad/Gus.

Sounds like a coot trying to prove he’s seen a #### football game but actually wrong in everything he wrote. There’s a national feeling that southerners are stupid and South Carolina folks are really slow and dim witted, don’t prove them right.

A quick Wikipedia search and decent memory would say otherwise. Heupels only coaching tree connection to anyone you mentioned is that Art Briles coached under Mike Leach.
TN runs a version of the Air Raid Offense. Mike Leach learned that offense working for Hal Mume. Hal Mume got it from Mouse Davis’s run and shoot.
Heupel was a QB at Oklahoma when Leach was the OC. When he went back to Oklahoma as a coach, Kevin Wilson was the OC. Wilson worked under Randy Walker at Miami and Northwestern. Walker was one of the originators of a heavy run spread offense. Wilson is now the Ohio State OC.
All good football coaches are influenced by things that work but I would suspect Heupel was more influenced by the people he actually played for or worked with than Morris, Briles or Malzahn.
Morris was a very good OC for us. He had a whole lot more talent to work with at WR when he was here than we have right now. Our WRs are better than most of the teams we play, but I think we tend to forget how good they were when Morris was here. If Charone Peak was on the current Clemson team, he would be the top guy. We don’t have a day one 2023/2024 NFL draft WR on the roster at this point. TN, Ohio State and Bama have multiple and GA has Brock Bowers.
If Jeff Scott does not survive this season, you might see both Scott and Morris back at Clemson in some capacity.

Not a single word of your post is even remotely true. Chad Morris didn’t do anything for Art Briles, briles is older and was established already. Briles built stephenviile high school in Texas and Morris took that job two coaches later, Morris also took over an already established Lake Travis HS. Morris is an overrated clown show. Briles is scum of the earth and it’s been proven at the Hs level where his assistant coaches regularly impregnated the school girl cheerleaders and Morris is of the same scum bag character.
Do your research before spouting offf your nonsense. Morris and Briles are not even remotely connected other than Morris being briefly at Stephenville HS where Briles won several state titles.

Those saying CM's playcalling didn't lead to a NC are not factoring in that DW4 was a Freshman CM's last year as OC. That's the year Cole Stoudt led the win vs OU in the bowl game. CM went to be the HC at SMU prior to the bowl game. That is also the time we brought B. Streeter back to be QB coach....J. Scott and TE became Co-OC for that bowl game.
So, DW4 could have certainly led to the NC with CM has OC....
Go Tigers!!!
