My poor (teacher) BIL with the hairy wang has a 2001 GMC Pickup truck....I think it's kinda the basic V8 with extended cab. He says the transmission just went dead and he got a quote for $5K to repair.
Assuming you were poor and in the same situation, what would ya do?

$3k bill to fix my truck. Spent $1300 on it in January. $4300 to fix a truck that appraises at $8500 is a little upsetting. Mine is a 2008 F150 with low-ish miles though.
If I had a $5k bill to fix a 22 year old truck, I'd move on to another truck.

Pay 5k for the repair. Car payments suck and if the repair is likely to get him 50k more miles, it’s worth it.
An illustration of your hairywanged poor brother in law in his truck may also help me advise.

I would not make more in repairs than the car is worth.

I'd spend that $5,000 to get something reliable.
Sounds like our BILs could be friends. Mine and his wife are driving around in a 2001 Tahoe that my MIL handed them down years ago. My SIL goes on FB to complain about not having working AC in her car.
But they could afford to buy a new camper... soooo I dunno. It's a fascinating study.

Decent used tranny is probably $1200-1500 for that.

Most shops are going to buy from a supplier of rebuilt transmissions. Those suppliers vary greatly in quality, from how selective they are on the transmission cores they start with to what their rebuild includes to the warranty they offer, so the $3k could be rebuilt from a cheaper supplier. Honestly it sounds more in line with what the job should cost for rebuilt.
What I’m talking about would need a shade tree mechanic friend who is willing to install a customer supplied transmission. 75-100k Mike transmissions are available all day for that truck for $750-900. Pay someone 4-500 to swap it out and you’re out the door for $1500.

Truck broken. Transmission bad. Dealer want $5000 to fix. What should he do?
Get another opinion: Ask someone else to check truck. Maybe they have different answer or cheaper price.
Used or rebuilt transmission: Instead of new, find old or fixed transmission. Maybe cheaper. Make sure it has warranty.
Other repair shops: Not only dealer, check other places. Maybe they cheaper and still good.
Truck value: Think about truck worth. If repair too expensive, maybe better to sell or find new truck.
Talk to dealer: Ask dealer for lower price. Maybe they agree if they want happy customers.
Decide what's best based on truck condition, value, and money. Look at all choices and choose the one that makes sense for him.

to rebuild a 4L60E??

Those things are growing out of the ground. Although its not surprising it needs a transmission..All 4l60E's need replacing.
I did a 1.2 sec google search and found 5 under $2000; moist of them were new. Tell him to buy $20 in wrenches and borrow a jack. Changing that thing out ain't rocket science.
But for $2500..yeah, I'd fix it. I mean I spent that much on an old golf cart 2 weeks ago.

Looking for Intelligent car people in Le Lunge...
I had a similar situation with my Acura in 2022. put 3K into a transmission or sell as junk for $500. I put in the tranny.
Guess it depends on how much he likes a 22 yo truck.

But let's say a new tranny will be at least $3K.
I'd look for something reliable and maybe a little newer. Think Toyota Avalon. 2001s list for $6K and under.
Not as useful as a truck but probably go another 100K miles and give him little trouble.

Is he looking for a "tear down, find what's wrong, fix it?"

Or does he just want a functional vehicle?
May be cheaper to find a transmission from a compatible vehicle at the junk yard. Find whatever year range that transmission was used, look for Chevy or GMC's that have been t-boned or had some other reason to total.
To tear it down and figure out what's wrong then fix it - there's a shitton of parts inside an automatic transmission. When they tear it down they need to keep track of it all. And it's a tedious process that they have to pay attention. Basically, the new kid (cheap labor rate) isn't getting this one.
But swapping a transmission for something pulled off a junker? May be cheaper?

Lol.
No, just make sure you send it to the transmission dude on TikTok. That guy has made me appreciate the cost of fixing transmissions. There's like 400 parts and he inspects them all and replaces anything worn or bad. I haven't a clue how the thing comes apart, or goes back together. WAY beyond even normal mechanic stuff.

It's two hour job for someone who hasn't done much wrenching. Even if he has to go to harbor freight and buy a cheap set of tools and a torque wrench it won't cost more that a few bucks. Do not touch the underside of the valve body with your hand or that rag you wipe the face of the surface of the flat part which the pan bolts to. DON'T DO IT.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6THHOWxyV6I
NOTE:
I like to drain the torque converter when I change oil and filter on my Benz but I don't know if that is possible on a Chevy or any other Mexican junk.
BTW, it might not work but you asked what folks would do. Message was edited by: ClemsonTiger1988®
