You have to tell your captain....
"If we win the toss, we defer" ..."if they win and defer, we want the ball".

Some dude

(Who shall remain nameless lest we conjure him like Beetlejuice) kept repeating over and over again that James Davis had never fumbled. A bunch of folks pointed out he had, and for some reason dude stuck to his guns. I should've known better then to argue, and evidently only marginally better now.

Three things I specifically remember about that game....
Sep 11, 2013, 11:00 AM
|
|
1 - The game was not televised
2 - Clemson wore purple jerseys and white pants on the road
3 - The 39 - 3 beat down Clemson put on GT.

They knew they were going to put an inferior product on the field with their offense, so they sent their defense out there twice.

Something like this happened during the CTB days

Can't recall for the life of me what game it was, but we deferred at the start of the game, then elected to choose which direction to go after halftime instead of getting the ball. I guess it was a windy day.

I remember many years ago watchiing a Pitt-Penn St. game that was played on a very windy day at PSU. The cameras were on the field for the toss, and it went something like this:
Ref: Pitt, you have won the toss. You can receive, kick, or defend a goal. Pitt Captain: We'll kick and defend this goal (pointing to goal). R: You only have one choice. You can kick, receive OR defend the goal. PC: (Hesitating) Uh...we'll kick and defend this goal. R: Son, listen... you can't do both! Now tell me, (speaking slowly) do you want to kick or defend the goal? (PSU captains trying hard not to LOL at this point) PC: (Looking nervously from the ref to the camera and back) Uh...we'll, uh....kick.
So PSU got the ball and the wind to start the game. In the kids defense, the last thing Johnny Majors probably told him was that if they won the toss they would kick and defend the goal instead of receiving, and he was just going by exactly what his coach told him. And then he got flustered by the ref, and the presence of the cameras didn't help. For the record, it didn't hurt anything; Pitt won going away.
