I’ve never carried a pocketknife, which explains why I’ve never noticed the marketing associated with them. But today I saw a knife display in a gift shop for what I’d describe as modern-minimalist pocket knives. The advertisement placard behind the knives featured a hipster male model sitting alone in a restaurant, cutting a steak with his pocketknife.
There were no sides on his plate, and he only had a glass of brown liquor, neat, to accompany the meat. The blade had an ornate, busy design on it that clashed next to the model’s forearm tattoo. The slogan for the brand is “A knife that resembles you,” which drove home that the target market for this knife was young men who love whiskey, tattoos, denim shirts, and hair pomade.
Unrelated to the queer marketing campaign, this ad spoke to me for a different reason, occupying a large portion of my afternoon thought cycles because it sparked a small calling in me—I want the attention that comes with being the guy at Longhorn Steakhouse who rolls up his shirt sleeves to show off his tattoos, and then pulls out a pocketknife to cut his steak.

Sharpest you can buy. Have two of them. One in the car all the time and one for work.

I very seldom carried one either, but my dad carried an Old Ben, religiously.

And he kept an oilstone in the desk drawer in our shop office, and kept the blades on that thing honed SHARP.
