Hello Gents. I know it's been discussed prior on this board but I would like to purchase a decent scotch in the range of $50 or so for Thanksgiving/Christmas. Any suggestions.

Scotch is a multi-layered subject.

Not as simple as "what's good for $50?"
That said, you won't go wrong with The Macallan or Glenlivet. For the adventurous there's Laphroaig.

NOT for the beginner/uninitiated.
If I just wanted a "good Scotch" for the holidays, I'd go Macallan or Glenlivet. Macallan is the "sweeter" of the two, and Macallan Double Cask has a strong vanilla-y/oaky tone. Nicer than your average Scotch. For sipping, not mixing.

Thanks for the suggestions. Have had scotch but would like to step up the game from Johnny Red. Had the gold which I enjoyed but I'm basically the equivalent of wanting to go from bud light to craft beer

It depends on whether you want a blender or single malt scotch.

Glendronach 12 yr in my opinion is the best deal for the money.

I love Highland Park 12...yum...
I can't Laphroaig...not my type at all. Opposite end of my palate spectrum!

If you want a single malt scotch for under $50 about the only option you have is Glenlivet 12. It's a staple in most bars that I'm in when I travel and it's a fairly good option for the money. From there the sky is the limit with scotch. I don't care for blended scotches so I never drink Johnny Walker. I keep Balvenie, MaCallan and Aberlour 16 in my cabinet but those are much more than $50.

The best entry level for around $50 would be something like Glenmorangie; I'd recommend the Glenmorganie Lasanta.
