Can we get a RB with 4.35-4.45 speed please

I don't care if he is 4'5" - Want to get back to seeing our RB's able to take it to the house on any given play. Just the threat will open up the offense. Wonder if Trevor Etienne is in the market for transfer portal.

Well, Shipley runs in the 4:4's so there is that. What's the matter you upset because you cant gripe and complain about DJ anymore?

Sorry, no way is Shipley 4.4. Maybe in high school. But not able Shipley - runs tough as nails - he is Thunder - I miss Lightning. Etienne was Thunder and Lightning in one.

It’s not the 40 time that’s the most important, it’s the first 2 steps (acceleration). Those first 2 are what really pop through the line or make defenders miss their angle. Sometimes that shows on the 40 time, but not always.
Tavien Feaster comes to mind as someone who didn’t have a quick burst but fast track time.
Etienne, while fast top speed, was even quicker in his acceleration. Sammy’s burst was elite too.

Shipley is fast, and he might have even run 4.4 in street clothes but I've seen him caught from behind too many times to say he's 4.4 in pads. He is fast enough to bust big yardage plays but if there's a guy with similar speed anywhere close he gets run down. That's not saying he's a bad back, he's a great back and I love his power and no quit running style but he's not in the league of CJ or Etienne.

Will Shipley does not run that, and anyone stating so has not watched him run the ball this season.
Will is shifty and has his positives, but breakaway speed is not one of them

Spiller was NFL talent, but probably not any more. He's gotta be mid 30s by now. In his day though he was 4.4 fast.

No he wasn't. Ellington actually ran a 4.61 at the Combine, which I'll agree was a bad time, but he was not a guy who was even close to running in the 4.3's.

He pulled his hamstring on the run. Just watching them both, Shipley doesn't have the speed Ellington had.

Spiller was faster on the field than on a clocked 40 time. He was the fastest on the field i've ever seen. I think it was the adrenaline that made him sub 4.4

How does CJ running a 4.27 40 yard dash prove your point that he was faster on the field than during 40s? Are you suggesting he ran a sub 4.2 40 on the field? I agree CJ was the most electric player I've ever seen. He was truly lightning (as was Ford who was virtually identical in speed). But I think he was fast in both scenarios.

Ellington ran a 4.49 stopwatch but ran a 4.51 at Pro Day. He definitely had poor time at Combine, he was faster than 4.6, and he could hit the hole with power and house it with speed.
I just don't think he ever got the praise he deserved at Clemson because he had Spiller in front of him for couple yrs.

Correct! CJ was probably our fastest RB ever. The RB that was much faster than he ever got credit for was Andre Ellington.
Jacoby Ford was the fastest player I can confirm I have seen in person. I think Youngblood, Woolford and Chansi Stuckey were some of the fastest players I can recall.
Interesting sidenote: Chansi is WR coach at ND.

Shipley does not have the size and strength to make in the nfl. Just my opinion. He’s great out of the backfield has a pass catch (great improvement this year), but he still gets blown up on pass protection.

Dude, guys like Travis Etienne and CJ Spiller do not just fall off of trees. There's a reason both of them were first-round draft picks at a position that doesn't usually produce first-round draft picks because the half-life of a RB in the NFL is so durn short.
Honestly, the guy Shipley most reminds me of is Andre Ellington, maybe even a little more physical. He's a complete back who's good in pass-pro, catches extremely well out of the backfield, slashes it north-south between the tackles, and sees the cutback lane extremely well and knows how to use blockers to set him up. And while he can hurt you with his speed, exactly like Ellington he looks like more of a sub-4.5 guy than a sub-4.4 guy, which are...rare. And Mafah reminds me of any number of guys I've seen come out of Alabama, or Nick Chubb at Georgia.
We've got two really, really good RB's who are going to be playing Sundays. Ask 99% of teams in America if they'd take a stronger version of Ellington and a guy like Nick Chubb, they'd absolutely take it.

Ellington was fast and more of a one cut guy. Don't remember him getting run down once he got free. Love Shipley, but lacks Ellington's home run ability.

Ellington ran in the low 4.4 range.
He was that fast in high school in the 170 lb. range, bulked up in college and maintained that speed.
Quozzel I absolutely respect your analysis but I think you have missed the boat big time on this one with the comparison of Ellington and Shipley.
First, Ellington never got run down from behind. He had multiple kick return TDs and TD runs of 50+ while at Clemson. Further speaking to his speed, he continued to do the same thing in the NFL. Ellington was a step slower than but most comparable to Chris Johnson as a runner. One cut and go with a style much more aligned to using quickness and vision to avoid tacklers rather than breaking tackles (Shipley) or juking guys (Spiller). While Ellington had the speed to take it to the house on any play, his defining characteristics were his vision and quickness. He played faster than his 40 time.
Shipley is a much more physical style runner than Ellington. He frequently gets run down. He struggles to beat any angles even by linebackers. Shipley does not have the balance of Ellington either. If Shipley breaks a tackle it is because somebody hit him above the waist. Any contact to his legs has a good shot to take him to the ground. He also inexplicably trips in open field far to often. I know people rave about it, but I am not sold that Shipley has great vision either. He often seems that he has to actively search for his path rather than seeing the field instinctively. He plays slower than his 40 time.
I'm not sure who I would compare Shipley to. He has a big back running style but in a smaller package than most guys who run that way. If you forced me to pick a name I would say maybe Josh Jacobs. I think in a timed 40 Shipley will probably outrun Jacobs, but they both seem to run with a contact over space mentality.
In saying all of this, Shipley is a good back and Clemson is lucky to have him.
With that said, Clemson desperately needs a home run in the back field or in the WR room soon!

I don't numbers on total plays over 50 yards but:
In his first season in the NFL his longest run was 80 yards.
In his second season his longest play was a reception for 81 yards.
In his third season his longest rush went for 63 yards.
He spent much of his last 2 season hindered by injuries and his performance quickly declined which ultimately led to him only having a 5 year career.
In his first three years however, he was very much a big play threat in the NFL.

That's next on the wish list. Sammy Watkins was crazy fast (recall the Georgia game, running over DB and outrunning everyone for the TD). But also remember Amari outrunning everyone down the sideline. And Renfrow against USC. Haven't seen any of the breakaway runs after catches in 2 years.

I’m going to suggest that the positioning of the defenders has much to do with a carriers ability to take it to the house. Ever think about that? Also, when ETN was breaking them, the defense had TL and really good receivers to think about, so the alignment favored his abilities. Maybe this will help: Have you ever noticed that many of the break aways happen with the box full on 3rd and short? Think about it - the past 2 years our opponents didn’t have to worry about our passing game. Knowing what is coming really helps most defenses and if the defender has the angle on the back, it doesn’t matter if they are 4.8 or 4.3. The RB situation is as good as it’s gonna get for Clemson, so worry about how to improve our receiving corp. ETN spoiled us with his ability to shake low tackles with his strength, then take off like a jet. Not many, including Spiller have/had that combo. If we have a good pass threat, the odds improve for Ship to be more explosive.

I believe Mike Bellamy and Demarcus Bowmen were both that level speed and both were busts. Hard to find that combination of speed, vision, and toughness. The Travis Etienne’s of the world don’t grow on trees. Still don’t see how he slipped through the cracks.

Can you tell me one team that has a RB with a 4.35 40 time? Tell me the last 3 RBs that ran 4.35 at the combine?? 4.35 speed is basically super elite speed. I can tell you 2022 didn't have anyone run 4.35 or less.
You get a RB that is 4.4 speed that can run up the middle and carry enough weight to not get beat up and you have a stud.

I can't answer your question, but I ran into this oddity while looking. At the 2020 Combine Henry Ruggsran the fastest 40 at 4.27. The eleventh fastest time was a 4.39 run by Isaiah Simmons. This was reported by CBS Sports.

I remember hearing Jerry Butler ran a 4.23 40. He beat Harvey Glance in the 60 yd dash. Glance was an Auburn sprinter with the fastest current time 9.4 100 yd (1975) & 10.05 100 meter(1985) and 1976 Olympic 4×100 Gold Medalist. Butler was on the ACC record setting 4×100 team.
Hershel Walker was reported at 4.3. Shawn Crawford ran a 9.88 100 M.
See list of Top 40 times
Also, Tye Hill ran a 4.30
