When you have never actually coached but have been an analyst, it's easy to see why more emphasis was placed on scheme than on playing solid fundamental football. Look for our defense to be outstanding this year and put that with a Heisman QB and you have a natty team.

Exactly. Wes was an intellectual football genius who probably drew up schemes in his sleep. Only problem was his players could not keep up. Tom Allen believes in KISS...Keep It Simple Stupid. And, beat the crap out of the opposing offenses.

Nothing we've ever talked about here on T-Net had never gotten more TD's than my opinion of Wes Goodwin as our DC, but I only told the truth about Wes Goodwin's ability to actually coach a college defense. I said many times that he had no on the field coaching experience, he never played college FB, and I would ask how could anybody actually believe that he could coach a championship college FB defense. If Wes would have been put with another DC that had years of experience, someday down the road he could have made a decent FCS DC.
The Clemson DC job was so far over Wes Goodwins heads that I'm personally surprised that he made out of his first season as the DC at Clemson, and the only reason that he did was nothing more than the talent that played on our defense. If we think that our last season defense was bad, if Dabo would've given Wes another season to prove himself, our defense would have been the worst that any of us had ever seen at Clemson, plus the guys that decided to come back, we would've never seen them play another down of FB at Clemson. Those guys aren't stupid, they saw what was happening on our defensive side of the ball!!!

He knows defense up and down and sideways. The year before last we were 8th in the country. Thing with Wes was his ability to motivate the team. To bring that fire, toughness, and physicality.
It didn’t work out, but I get it’s part of Dabo’s philosophy in that he sometimes promotes from within due to his loyalty. It worked fantastically well with Tony Elliot and Jeff Scott. It looks to be working with CJ, and Grisham’s group is getting closer to his first year when he led the most productive receiving group in Clemson history. So it can work. It’s not an uncommon management philosophy. And no, it doesn’t always work out, but neither do outside hires. Assistant coaches get let go every year. Coaches miss sometimes. Dabo is not above that.

Because we still had some tigers from Venables’ time that still has not transitioned to Wes’ defense. The more the defense transitioned to Wes’ the less effective they were.
I like Allen’s stated philosophy… simple, aggressive, and physical … with anticipation and reading the game.

Well at least he clearly sees the obvious from last years film. Because the fundamentals was def a big part of the problem.

Yeppers, tackling is important on defense. Using a spreadsheet for defense isn't that productive.

Really no substitute for a fundamentally sound physical defense that wants to bully an offense.

Numerous times last year our defense was looking to the sidelines for the call while the ball was being snapped. More than once we looked lost on the field.

Come on now that was a staple of BVs defenses too. The difference is Wes D looked lost after the snap too.

Strange that Goodwin said the samething when he got the job.
Last year looked simple and with bad fundamentals imo. There was very little aggression in play calling as well as play style on the field.
Sounds like the aggression will be back though.

almost "too good" against the Chickens...The only they could do to combat it was run the QB for 150+ yards and multiple TDs

Confused players play slow. Slow players end up out of position (gaps) and as result are not able to make tackles. Keeping schemes simple allows players to react to what they see instead of thinking.

It seemed that Wes often out-thunk himself and confused his players too.

That and failed to instill the toughness and fundamentals we needed.
