They never made it past #4 (end of season 2013)...to follow it up with pre-season #9 to un-ranked...but hey, they beat the team in their insignificant bowl we clobbered this year 58-0. Really impressive.

nm...says it later in there....that section must have been highest AP ranking.
1984 – "Black Magic"
"Led by Coach Morrison, the 1984 Gamecocks became the first team in school history to win 10 games (10–2 record) and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the polls.."

and would have been invited to the Orange Bowl and been #1 if they had won (#1 Nebraska lost earlier in the day to Oklahoma).
But they didn't..........
As a Clemson student that year, we were already planning next week's game, hosting the #1 ranked Cluckers. But not to be. Would have been a titanic game.
I think it actually served as a letdown for the Clemson team, as they were primed for that matchup. We ended up losing 22-21 on a last second TD/XP (which was missed, but we had a penalty to let them re-kick, and lost by that XP).
Cluckers ended up going to the Gator Bowl and getting beat by Barry Sanders-led Oklahoma State.

Here's a Stat for you.
Kentucky Vanderbilt South Carolina
The only 3 SEC teams to never be ranked #1.
That should tell you where their program is.

After playing for well over 100 years they still had a losing record! They call themselves among the "elite" because of SEC membership, but OBS, the quitter, finally got them into positive wins status so they celebrate him as the greatest! The only elite status they presently have is being among the least successful programs of collegiate football history! No wonder they cling to 5-0 as their finest achievement.
Gamecocks - Look out or the Citadel might blemish your record once more this Saturday.
Go Tigers!
