disappointing season in Clemson basketball history or....
86-87, 93-94, 21-22 or any Purnell NCAA tourney invite? or Another?
FM would reference preseaeson expectations, but does his opinion really matter?
Curious.

Looking back, having Dale Davis and Elden Campbell on the same team

should've been Final 4 worthy. I know it took a freak play from one of the nation's top player to knock us out in the sweet 16, but still.. That team should have been seeded higher than a 5 and put in a bracket with Duke, UConn, Kansas and a 1 loss LaSalle team.

Nevermind, UCONN, Elden completely clueless under the basket. Certainly not even close to a disappointing team.

We beat Duke to win the ACC regular season and then followed up with a 20+ point loss at Ga Tech.
and I think we lost in the first round of the ACC tournament.
That team was so up and down given the talent level.

We were #5 in the AP poll to start the season. We had dropped out of the top 25 by mid-December. We briefly got back in the top 25 in mid-January but weren’t ranked after that.
After the new year, we were just 8-11.That team had two future NBA players (Buckner a senior, Jamison a junior) and also had McIntyre (a junior) who was incredible in Europe, plus some other good pieces such as Wideman, Iturbe, Christie, etc.) yet we were just 18-14, 7-9 in the ACC overall.
Nonetheless, the committee gave us the benefit of the doubt because of the ACC’s reputation and seeded us 6th. We were upset by 11 seed Western Michigan in the first round.
Second most disappointing has to be the 86-87 team. Although we were not highly thought of in the preseason (unranked), we were 25-6 overall and 10-4 in the ACC. Horace was ACC Player of the Year and an All-American. That team is disappointing because it lost in the first round of the ACC Tournament and was then upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. We were a 4 seed and lost to 13 seed Missouri State.

Judge please don’t take this wrong way, but your commenting on my post could be misinterpreted by some morons around here of discrediting my post and potentially calling it racist or out of bounds.
While I will not name the idiot I’m referring to, that would be a personal attack. I will ask that people recognize some experts ignorance of the last 7-8 years of Tiger basketball. Glad we overcame purnell’s lack of caring in the end. Yeah. It was said. 🙂
Glad we didn’t hire Gregg Marshall over Pat Kelsey a couple of years ago. 😳

I will go with the 18-19 squad. We returned 4 out of 5 starters plus Simms off of a Sweet 16 team and failed to even make the tournament. We went 1 and done in the ACC blowing an 18-point 2nd half lead in a must win game. We lost any game that mattered that year. Then we lose at home to Gregg Marshall in the 2nd round of NIT. Just an overall disappointing year. You return that much production off a Sweet 16 team making the tournament should be minimum in my opinion.

DeVoe and Grantham.
Donte was an integral piece of our team that year, and although he was injured for the postseason, we surely would have been better with him back the following year.
DeVoe got hot in the postseason and was a huge factor in our Sweet 16 run.
Shelton Mitchell battled injuries all year his senior year. He played, but he was not the same player. He really gutted it out that year.

Is there a reason you can’t make a remotely honest appraisal of anything? Grantham missed the second half of the season and didn’t play at all in the post-season. It was the very fact that we were so successful despite his absence (a senior who we knew wouldn’t be retuning) that set the stage for heightened expectations. You’re actively revising history. While Grantham was probably the most talented player on the team he was not remotely one of the two most important players considering he only played 19 games.

The only thing subjective in his post is the 2 best players and you aren't even arguing that.
Grantham was no doubt one of our best players and a leader of the team in the 19 games he played. IMO Reed, devoe, and grantham were the 3 best players on that team.

He also had nothing to do with expectations that would have been staged by the results that team generated which is the subject of the thread. You know exactly what I mean and what the original person to reference 2018-19 meant. This is a perfect example of dishonest debate.

I did have high expectations and we fell short. It was a disappointing season for me. Also everything jk said was true.
Btw im pretty sure we finished with a net of 35 that year. Likely would have been good enough to get in by today's standards. It wasn't an awful season, but definitely finished below my expectations.
Also, I thought looking back at post history meant you were an obsessed loser.

His answer was non-responsive to the post he responded to. the only attack was pointing that out. The rest was just discussing the actual facts of the situation. This is why we always end up in such acrimony. A half dozen accounts pile on in his defense, usually failing to grasp critical context, but arguing in his defense regardless.

My post is from the perspective of year three. Yours is an assessment of 6 years from year 15. That either of you see these as equivalent shows a lack of critical thinking.

So you dont agree with your "perspective"? Seems like you described exactly what went down. Was he also in a lurch the next year because we had no seniors?
"With the early signing period, recruiting was all but done for the next year. I'm not sold on Brownell, but he is in a lurch entirely of Purnell's making. Purnell is principally responsible for us having 2 seniors and no juniors on this team."

He was in a lurch in mid-2013. Three different accounts are going to tag-team and pretend that he should have been afforded 3 more seasons to solve it while reality tells us he actually need another 9 and a completerule change from the NCAA? And notice I didn’t throw the players he did have under the bus either. Keep patting yourselves on the back for making the exact same, completely wrong interpretation. I wonder why so many others think you’re all one account.

How is it incongruous to think that Purnell’s leaving was less than ideal and that, in the middle of year 3, that he was unfairly judged but that by year 6 Brownell should have been able to have figured it out?

in Grantham’s absence.
DeVoe graduated and Mitchell was nowhere close to 100% the following year.
Marquise Reed had a nice season and Eli Thomas continued to improve, but that team wasn’t close to being as talented as the Sweet 16 team.
I agree that it was perhaps a disappointing season, but anyone who knew that team knows that we lost a lot from the previous year’s team. It wasn’t nearly as disappointing as the 97-98 team.

The last paragraph would have been a far more reasonable response and probably wouldn’t have warranted comment. Nor would your buddies have to work themselves into a lather.
By the way, I never said I agreed that 17-18 was most disappointing but you were entirely dismissive. Given that we made the Sweet Sixteen and returned a very high percentage of our overall minutes and productivity from that season, it would have to rank as one of the top 5.

To clarify, FM bases our success against our preseason ranking. The 97-98 team finished 3 spots below their ACC preseason ranking. Very disappointing.
Coupled with the fact that Barnes was job shopping only magnifies the disappointment by having your “most successful” coach dissing your program like that.
Did he even leave a recruiting class? Shyatt grabbed Simmons on the way in. Further proof that Barnes was no better than Purnell in exiting. Knew he was gone and killed the program in the process.
Guess Gilmore, Braddock and Whitt d I’d go on to successful stints at SC State.
Thanks slick Rick.
