Woodaz verses Brown

Both got about 80 tackles this year but Brown had more sacks (5 vs. 3.) in limited playing time. Wade was a junior and Brown a true freshman backup.
Does Brown start next year?

Didn't Woodaz play SLB and Brown MLB in the 4-3? i.e. both start and we find a new WLB to play in Carter's spot?

Good point but hardly comparable to Brown. Snap count? Need to look it up.***

Woodaz was in cover most games either the TE or RB. Carter had more rushing responsibilities and would get there just to miss the tackle somehow. Brown didn't go into cover, he was gap filler and if he could rush then he did.

I think another year in the weight room will really help both of them. Brown really got dominated by O linemen at times but he was a freshman. Woodaz is pretty good in the open field. Looking forward to both improving next year.

Brown got ‘dominated’ by the TX guard on that 77 yard TD backbreaker because of blatant holding. Duck Butkus could not have wiggled out of that hold.
Brown did well overall against guards and tackles that didn’t hold him, although there is indeed room for improvement. (Brown also needs to improve his coverage skills, whether or not he only plays ILB.)

so it’s hard to just look at tackles/sacks as the determining stat(s). But yes, I’d think Brown will start next year.

There is no comparison between the 2 . Brown is bigger , stronger , faster , just flat out more talented ! He played very few snaps in early season games and way fewer snaps than woodaz and still matched him in tackles . We need some more talent at LB to help Brown out next year .

Just seeing him out there too. He was clearly a better tackler than Woodaz.

Sammy will definitely start, and I Will also say that the next time we have a third down and goal to go at the one yard line, give the football to Sammy with Peter Woods and another big DL blocking for him!

LITERALLY said this in the stands that afternoon to my son before the 1st and goal. You could even have run quarterback behind all that mass on a follow play, but I would have just handed Sammy the rock and said go eat.

Well, your 90% correct. That's what the head coach said from day one and that's the way it's been listed on the depth chart. But when push comees to shove and your getting run over by everyone including the Citadel, then eventually, after 13 games, you make a switch from 2 to 3 LB's to try and stop the bleeding. So we were only steamrolled for 292 yards. It could have been worse. Our best tackler is a true freshman and we have many players, including one of the LB's, that are not good tacklers. We got who we got.

Not only will he start , he will put fear into our opponents.
He's already the strongest LB on the team as well as fastest.
Dude puts on more weight and gets stronger along with a better understanding of his role he will be the second coming of Levon Kirkland.
Also , keep an eye on Dee Crayton.
I think he makes huge strides this year.

PBT please understand Woodaz is a high caliber D1 LB. He's much more athletic than given credit for and one of the few(when healthy) i trusted to make tackles. Not to mention he had a knack for getting his hands on the ball in the air.
Sammy Brown and Wade Woodaz is a nice combo. Need one more guy to emerge and with the right coach the lbs could make a very quick turn around.

What makes you think this? I thought Woodaz was significantly better than Carter. The SCAR game was the only game where I remember being frustrated with Woodaz and he was playing with a serious contusion on his leg.

I think you're imagining some of that, the gap assignment issue was the entire defense, truly think they were not being coached proper gap assignments. Sammy is just otherworldly athletic and could erase bad gap integrity with instincts and speed. Getting washed inside by say a pin and pull(something UGA, Louisville, SCAR, and Texas did well) was an alignment issue(back to coaching and scheme).
Woodaz has length, speed, and usually made tackles in 1v1 situations.
I like Woodaz in the middle like to see Sammy where Carter was so he can cover or blitz.

On alot of big plays. Seems like that was the case with Lanorris Sellers anyways. Was there but didn’t get himself in position to make a tackle. And got toyed with. That’s when Brown should have been in there.

Brown should've been playing over Woodaz vs SCAR for sure, keep in mind Woodaz was playing hurt with what many were saying was a severe contusion on his leg.
