ND Thoughts

Aug 26, 2023, 4:04 PM

It appears as if ND is still using the slow mesh run. Last season, ND chewed up the field with that play over and over again. With Sam Hartman, they’re not any better than last season from what I’ve seen. If Clemson’s offense is as advertised and Clemson’s defense has an answer for the slow mesh run; Clemson wins it by double digits.

With Hartman they aren't any better?

We’re not watching the same game, mah dude qb play was grotesque last year for the Irish. This is insanely better lol!

Hartman is baller. Even at Wake he was impressive. He moves around the pocket naturally and keeps his eyes downfield. He beats the blitz with ease (Navy didn't do a great job disguising looks but,) Sam has the ability to make special plays and has a cannon. I hate ND with a passion but Sam Hartman might have been the best thing they have done in 10 years for that program. I doubt ND got past the first page in the playbook. Didn't have to.

I’m having trouble with your assertion ND aren’t better with Hartman…I disagree

Re: ND Thoughts

Aug 26, 2023, 4:12 PM

Again, I just don’t see the vast improvement or difference. The ND offensive line is still very stout, but if Clemson handles business in the trenches, Sam Hartman won’t be able to develop plays. What burned Clemson last season was the slow mesh routes. Where the play developed slowly and the RB was lined up a little further back behind the QB. It was always a slow mesh off tackle style run and it burned Clemson over and over again.

No, what happened to us was the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball was dominated by Notre Dame. Hartman gives than another dimension but until they go to Raleigh and get Ohio State at home we will not know how good they are.

Yep. This game is incredibly one sided. Navy stinks. I want to see what the Irish look like at NC State and then Ohio State. We'll know all we need to know by September 23rd.

Let's see....Hartman was 19-23 with 4 TD's and 266 yards with a 97.9 QBR rating for the game. Oh, and ND didn't even punt the entire game.

And you're telling me ND hasn't improved? LOL

Re: ND Thoughts- well their played a half so clearly

Aug 26, 2023, 4:22 PM

He’s a great QB, and he took advantage of Clemson’s thin DB/CB last season. However, the O-Line he has this season is leagues above what he’s used to and it’s Navy he’s playing against. If he’s the caliber of QB everyone is claiming him to be then he would have been able to air it out all half. It would be 42-0 if he was really the dynamic QB every pundit claims him to be.

He’s thrown for two TD passes. His passing game has been limited thus far. It appears as if ND relies heavily on an O-Line that manages well for running plays. Haven’t seen Hartman drop back to pass that often. That means, if Clemson can stuff the run in the backfield and contain the WRs, then Clemson wins that game handily.

Of course, I’m merely basing it off of what I’ve seen through two quarters of play.

His passing game has been limited because the Irish have been running through the Navy defense like a knife through soft butter. No reason for Notre Dame to showcase everything they have against a sad sack Navy squad. Hartman looks very good, as does the rest of the Irish team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's averaging 11.5 yards per attempt

on 15/18 with 2 TDs in just over a half. Hes probably only going to play 3Q, but hes on pace to throw for close to 400 yards so im not sure how thats limited.

You can * it if you want because Navy's defense isn't good, but those are still excellent numbers.

Your assessment is wrong. Hartman’s play today has ascended them to the toughest game on our schedule.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

As I said, he’s a great QB and with that O-Line against Navy, he’s a world beater.

Notre Dame defense looks average. Good teams will be able to move the ball. Clemson should be able to score points. Can we stop their running game?

Watch you're seeing from ND is very vanilla. They don't need to show a whole lot to put these guys away.

ND is not showing anything today because they don’t have to. This is not the same ND offense that we will see on 11/4.

Re: ND Thoughts

Aug 26, 2023, 5:56 PM

As a ND fan allow me to object. Last year WE COULD NOT THROW THE BALL at all. That's why the Clemson game was so shocking. We were basically a one-dimensional team. Load up on the run and we had no counter.

Dabo knew that.

Attended the 2015 game down there and looking forward to this years match.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This we know

Aug 26, 2023, 6:51 PM

With the injuries and tragedies on the Clemson DL last year, Notre Dame emasculated our DL and Defense in South Bend last year. 263 yards rushing and 5.4 yards per carry. Two hundred yard rushers. No play action or deception. Just ramming the ball down our throats.

I am glad I wasn't there, and I don't expect it to happen again. But I expect Notre Dame to be our toughest opponent. The Irish will have no fear or respect for our defense and will have a much better QB in 2023. Tigers will be coming off two weeks on the road at Miami and NCSU, and Notre Dame will be coming off Pitt at home after a two week break.
