Will we make the ncaa Torny without Donte?

Thoughts?

I think we can since Reed, Mitchell, Thomas and Devoe have played so well, but it will really depend on if Aamir Simms can step up and be a big time player. He's shown flashes of being a special player, he just really has to come into his own in Donte's absence

I think so. We have some good guys on the bench and Sims didn’t look like the moment was too big for him. Donte was/is a team leader I would suspect that he will still be with the guys when they are practicing and playing. Unless he wants to just walk away I’m sure coach and his teammates will want him with them. It will help the team and hopefully keep Donte’s spirits up

I agree with Jean, I think Donte will be there as a leader to support & mentor the younger players. We will miss him greatly as a three-point shooter and a rebounder, but he will still be making valuable contributions.

With him, I would have said we were about 90% in. Now it might be more like 60-70% in. He was our most complete player. Others especially Simms will have to step up.

Perhaps because we have already won so many games. But, we won't last long.

Our odds went way down with Donte's injury.

I'm still hopeful - depth is our long suit this year, but man, Grantham was a leader, he hustled, and he produced big-time.

He will be missed for sure but he was not a big game changer.
So we can continue to play well with out him.
All we need is about 4-5 more wins and we are dancing

I think that game against NC would have had a different outcome if Grantham had been 100%

It really hurts losing him but we go go 7 deep with DeVoe, Reed, Mitchell, Thomas, Skara, Donnell, and Simms. Throw in Trapp, Oliver, and Spencer. Simms and Skara are going to have to score some for us but I do believe we can still make a run this year. Tuesday will show us more against the best D in the nation. If Simms can get 10 points or more I think we are set. He seems like he could be great.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that we will 100% absolutely most certainly and likely might make it to the tourney if we can play really good and beat a whole bunch of teams but who knows?

I thought we already qualified for the tourney with our current resume...

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We will!! Here's how....

Jan 21, 2018, 9:58 PM

We have 11 games left in the regular season: 5 home, 6 Away.

- Only 3 teams (UVA, UNC & Duke) remaining on the schedule are currently ranked in the top 25. Of those 3 games, 2 are at home (UNC & Duke). We win 1 of those three games.

- 4 of the 11 teams we play are ranked in bottom 4 in the conference right now (@WF, Pitt, @VT, @Syracuse). We win 3 of those 4 games.

- We play both FSU and GT home & away. We win both home game, and possibly both vs GT.

All that said, we win at least 6-7 of the next 11, putting us at 22/23 wins.

Our RPI will easily fall inside the top 40 with that prediction. Add another 2 losses, and we're still inside the top 50.

Then, we win 2 games at min in ACC tourney.

Lastly, add in wins vs ranked opponents Ohio State, Florida, Miami, and either (UNC, Duke or UVA) and there is no way we get left out.

Yes

Jan 21, 2018, 10:01 PM

We have the 6th ranked RPI right now. We only have to win 4 more games really.

But now we will be an 8-10 seed rather than a 5-6 like we could've been

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yes

Jan 22, 2018, 10:51 AM

I think we still have a chance to win the ACC. It sucks to lose him but Skara and Simms can fill in nicely for him. We still have some of the best guard play in the league and a really good big man.

Re: Will we make the ncaa Torny without Donte?

Jan 22, 2018, 10:29 AM

Barring a complete, Brownwell year end collapse (there have been others), the team should make it. However, I think they only win 5-6 more games and the committee will look at the last 11 games more harshly than most because of the loss of Grantham. Ultimate result will be a lower seed in tourney not indicative of the full year's resume.
