Dabo calling DJ our "best player"
Nov 30, 2022, 11:55 AM

Huge Dabo Swinney fan and Clemson fan since 1979 freshman year ... here's the rub ... I cannot get over Dabo calling DJ "our best player" after he benched DJ for committing three turnovers vs. Syracuse and Cade's mobility (certainly not play calls) led the team to a win.
Here's the quote ... "Your best player sometimes can have a bad day," Swinney told ESPN after the game. "He just got out of rhythm, made some bad plays. We just needed a change. We showed them we got that guy that can com in. DJ's our quarterback. There ain't no question about that. That's our guy. That's our leader. You can write that right now: DJ's our guy. He's got to play better, and he will ..."
Was Dabo spinning? Does he believe it? DJ has continued out of rhythm and not played better, and while there were 21 Tigers recognized on 1st/2nd/3rd/Hon. Mention, there was no mention of DJ in ACC All-Conference voting. What gives? For me, it's just too much spin, and the spin has a tendency to chip away at program credibility and all of Dabo's unbelievably great accomplishments over these past 10 years.

I respect what Dabo has done for CCC but a mention of DJ and best makes me think that he and Clinton both inhaled! That is if he really said that or it was taken out of context! I think I have been a student of football for many years and I don't remember a poorer executer of an offense over the course of 2 years still playing !!

all his players, especially with a mentally fragile QB.
It doesn't really matter to me. I get what he's doing.
One quick point about Cade vs. Cuse... I'm sure Cade is a bunch more mobile than DJ and will show those pocket fundamentals in the future, but nothing he did against Syracuse highlighted that. He literally handed off every play but 4.

Cade's runs changed Syracuse defense philosophy and opened up running lanes for Ship. We lose the game with DJ in.

by now, even with the limited sample size, that they can't rely on CK to give their DBs 4-5 seconds to get glued to the WR in coverage while the pocket is collapsing around him.
Bottom line - this offense ain't designed to be run by a statue of Thomas Jefferson.

I think the point being debated is whether or not his legs won the Syracuse game. I didn't see that.

6 carries for 15 yards?

DJ was 8 carries for 13 yards, with the sacks.
I think it was Shipley, albeit I liked the energy and pace better with Cade.

Everyone ignores that pass, he used his speed to by extra time and delivered a dart when Ngata got space. All I keep hearing is he can’t throw

This throw, IMHO, was TL16-esque.
That throw was on the money, and I can’t think of a similar throw from DJ, from that distance and with that velocity.
Even if Cade is 80% s good as DJ in passing, Cade’s mobility compared to DJ is worth 30% to make up the difference.

OH this play..... Dabo saw 3 WR's run the wrong routes, RB miss his block, Center jumped offsides, TE didn't block and release.... the QB he did what we asked him to do in that situation. Let's see what other ALL ACC TEAM players i can throw under the ROY bus!!

it's not why we won the game.
Cade is 7 for 15 with 85 yards, 1 TD and 1 (terrible decision) INT.
Cade will be great, IMO. Not ready just yet though. Might need him Saturday.

I don't think anyone said it was why we won the game.
But you're discounting the fact that we were in a tight game, clawing our way back in the 4th quarter with the game on the line up by 1. At that current moment the mind set is "we get the 2 pt, wake can tie with a FG, we miss it, Wake can win with a FG" and despite that we still put it in Cade's hands to deliver the ball from the 8 yard line after a false start.
We trusted him in that nut cutting situation but all of a sudden he sucks worse than 8/29 99?
I just don't freaking buy it.

That's a whole lot better than 8-29 for 99 yards and 1 interception.

Then once what a person is saying varies greatly with observable reality, their credibility begins to approach that of the senile old git stumbling on the steps on the jet airplane in your avatar.
Dabo isn't concerned with the comments being made by fans and the press in light of the recent underperformance of the team. That's his personal choice - he can listen or he can tune it out. Much of the time indeed it is wise to tune out the external noise. But if he ever quits caring about the results of his choices, we're in trouble. I don't think that is the case. He cares greatly, but he seems to be stubborn... and his stubbornness is costing him now. That's my take.
His decisions and actions in the coming days will tell us a LOT about him, and about what the future is going to look like for the Clemson football program.

Go back and look at the 2-point play. Exhibit No. 1 of mobility. That play does not happen with Ukulele in the game. And yes I spelled it that way. We don't know what Cade can do because we haven't seen him for five minutes. They have been hiding him. Three of his opportunities started inside the 15-yard line. All he is going to do is handoff. Throwing everybody else under the bus to protect Ukulele. We've been watching it for two years. We all know who the problem is. Has there ever been any talk about an effective quarterback would make everything else work better? Nope.

You expect support for basketball with one hand on the keyboard cooking up false narratives out of nowhere about the “haters”, then personally disparage a member of the football team with the other.
You earn the routine rebukes you receive from the majority of this site’s members.
You’ve also been caught with your scok hanging out more than once.

I suspect Dabo was speaking in general terms as in "(Even) your best player can have a bad day ..."
I doubt he sees DJ as his best player. But he clearly sees him as his best QB.
And that's precisely what all the hub-bub's about.

I read it that way too. Was that the same interview that he said something about Steph Curry sometimes goes 2/30 or something like that? I think he was just trying to make a point.
Also agree on the QB and hub-bub comments.

ESPN has DJU as the number 48 QB in the country, behind Jordan Travis (FSU - 6), Drake Maye (UNC - 9), Sam Hartman (Wake - 20), Riley Leonard (Duke - 28), Garrett Schrader (Syracuse - 41). That is a big improvement for DJU over last year. All the other players will be glad to know that DJU is the best player of the team. Dabo might need to get his thinking cap on straight.

Dabo calling DJ great, Qualk and Deptula calling DJ “Not the problem” and such and saying that the WR room is trash, how the WR’s are making the QB’s look awful…..when did we ever see DJ getting in ANY receivers face on the sideline and going “Look, pal…Catch the ball!” I mean a leader freakin leads. He motivates and if “its all love” aint working and DJ looks like a bumbling wooden legged goof who lost his eyeglasses in the huddle it just seems he would try to get a fire lit under somebody.

You are reading way outside the lines. Dabo did NOT call DJ his best player. He said even the best player has a bad day.
That said, I'll bet the "bad day" of Jordan, Bird, and Magic was pretty darn good.
