While I in no way condone any of Gruden's comments, the

Oct 12, 2021, 7:19 AM

fact that an ELEVEN YEAR OLD EMAIL is what got this started is disconcerting.

Do news, or other organizations now have people whose total job it is to comb all media platforms back to the beginning of recorded time, just to dig up dirt on figures in the public eye? Seems that must be so, else so many of these type things just now coming into the light of day would not be possible.

A REALLY unfortunate side effect of this phenomenon is that we wind up with intellectual popsicles like Trump and Biden vying for the highest elected office in the land. GOOD people don't want to run for office, because, sure enough, they said something wrong when they were in third grade, and somebody recorded it. Now it is back to haunt them decades later. That is the "truth" that we are rushing headlong toward in this "Cancel Culture" society.

All this pulling statues down, denying history, especially the mistakes of history, instead of just CALLING them history, means that we will eventually be doomed to MAKE those same mistakes again.

OK, I will exit the soapbox now. That thing was a foot tall, and I could barely step that high anyway. Why did they call them soapboxes, anyway. I bet there is some bad history behind that.....

Gruden works for an employer like most

Oct 12, 2021, 7:29 AM

folks so he had no control over his fate. A guy like Dave Chappell is showing how to fight this. He's already filthy rich so could care less and is telling them to shove it. And the funny thing is, many on both the political right and left are rallying around him. People in general are sick of this cancelling of people over what they say, including stuff years old. Japan cancelled the music director of the Olympics because he admitted to bullying someone in 3rd grade. Bill Maher is another guy tackling this head on. It ends when people in mass start standing up. Slowly it's beginning to happen

so few have the courage to take a stand, and instead cave once the knives come out for them. Was reading a story yesterday about a U. of Chicago professor, world renowned in his field, was cancelled for a speech at MIT because he had the audacity to say students and grades should be judged on merit, not anything else. What a radical idea! Princeton actually picked him up for his speech via Zoom and there aren't enough available slots for all who want to watch, to watch.

College campuses are among the worst places for this cancel culture mentality

I hope he is awarded millions of dollars. I am #### sick of minorities whining for equal rights then when they get them so idiot cries racism. You can tear down legitimate statues and remove memorials give them equal right + and many will still shout out White’s are racist.

Some white people are racist, some black people are racist to. In fact every race of people have people who are racist.

If you look back at history at some point in time every race has been enslaved, abused, and exploited by other races. So people who keep living in the past get over it. All of those whining people crying racism get over it!!!! We have all had to suffer at some point in history.

And you politically correct morons need to get a life. It seems like some people are miserable unless they are stirring up some kind of trouble!

It has gotten out of hand for sure! I'm sure everyone of us have said things that would offend someone. I got a reprimanded one time at work because I put myself down and when some co-workers laughed at it and added to it, I jokingly said ok!ok! I don't need any help from the peanut gallery. Well low and behold I found out that was a raciest term and my African American boss stated she did not even know it was and new I did not mean it as derogatory. Just for y'alls future reference it is a reference to segregation of the movie theaters when AA would sit in the balcony during a movie and throw peanut shells down on the whites for whatever reason. Hence the term Peanut gallery. So be careful using terms in todays society. Even Hush Puppies can be seen as raciest because the term came about when the slaves would try to escape and would take a hand full of their food which was usually corn meal and throw it to the dogs to keep them quiet.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hush puppies

Oct 12, 2021, 8:31 AM

I have heard hush puppies with a different origin. Kitchens were separated from the house. The dogs would jump and bark when the servants brought the food from the kitchen to the house. The cooks would cook up balls of cornmeal for the transport servants to throw at the dogs to shut them up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well said. We should all be kind and respectful to each other.

Oct 12, 2021, 8:22 AM

That should be the expectation. We should apologize when we are not. Digging up things from people's past to try and find a "gotcha" moment is not kind and respectful, it's downright evil. In 2021, it's nothing but passive-aggressive bullying in an attempt to punish and control those one doesn't like. In most cases, it's worse than the sins it exposes.

NOBODY was digging anything up on Gruden

Oct 12, 2021, 2:17 PM

Context matters, and in this case, the context that you and others spouting about is inaccurate. The NFL investigation into the Washington football team is where the 2011 email implicating Gruden came from. That email started the snowball because then others were discovered showing a pattern of bias that wasn't isolated but actually indicative of his character.

In a position of leadership and authority, Gruden cannot espouse biases and not be expected to have those same opinions when it comes to operating daily in a position of leadership and authority when it comes being fair, in your position of leadership and authority, to those people. Keyshawn Johnson apparently has said for years that Gruden is not a good person, it's just taken this long for the truth to be verified.

In this case, the old adage updated and applied "it is better to be thought an indecent human being, rather than to express yourself and remove all doubt" should have been his modus operandi...

Re: NOBODY was digging anything up on Gruden

Oct 12, 2021, 3:21 PM [ in reply to NOBODY was digging anything up on Gruden ]

I’m going to need to see more before I buy into the “pattern of bias” thing. So far I’ve heard about an email either making fun of someone’s appearance or hinting that he was a liar. Why is it that any time certain people’s appearance is made fun of it’s racist, but it’s ok the other way? Can’t you just say somebody’s funny looking anymore? Another one used naughty words to describe Goodell who never was his boss or anything. The words he used have probably been used by about 99% of men his age at some point or another. The only other damning email I’ve read about was one where he protested the drafting of a guy he didn’t think had a chance of making it in the NFL. He used a “slur” that is the preferred term of the group supposedly being slurred.

Also, if you say that nobody can lead an organization if they have any biases you are saying nobody can lead an organization. Do coaches need to be extraterrestrials or something or just sneakier?

And Mike Tirico who worked with Gruden for years, traveled the country and spent days at a time with him doing Monday Night Football said he did not see or sense anything racist from Gruden. If you respect someone, you treat them with respect no matter their race. Looking back at that all important history thing, I'm sure a man, MLK, said something to the affect ... judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Gruden obviously didn't respect a couple people including Goodell.

Oct 12, 2021, 8:48 AM

like that in an email. I know if I called my boss the names Gruden called Rodger Goodell, I'd be fired in a heartbeat. The problem here is that somebody went to the trouble to go back through years of Gruden's emails for a reason, and that reason wasn't routine, and it wasn't because they liked him. The danger here is that we all probably haven't left an electronic trail of insulting emails, but we've all said and done things we regret and things that could get us cancelled today, in 2021. Jesus also was always reprimanding the Pharisees/law makers(for the Jewish people) of his time. They would have so many rules and laws they would have sleeves that would be full of little scrolls of laws as reminders they made up and had nothing to do with how God viewed them, but they thought they were being righteous. It's bc the media way of thinking and seeing things is that, good news will not sell as well as bad news that most want to hear about bc, it makes their day, or their life not seem as bad as they once thought it to be. Also if the bad news isn't bad enough, the media has a knack of twisting the truth for making it sound worse than it is, that is what they do very well, especial when the truth doesn't have the merit that it once did!!!! People sometimes never weigh the value of the truth to a lie, and that is bc if you write them both on a piece of paper the same size, they will weigh the same even though Lie has less letters, it's a space saver, and people just love space savers!!!;)

Ronald Reagan is the last President with the Character to occupy the Oval Office and Trey Gowdy as a Congressman.

The best people stay out of politics because everyone of us has some sin we want keep out of the public eye. And the media digs up as much dirt. I place much of the blame on the lame, shady media with not integrity or character.

During JFK’ time in politics the media refused to report JFK’s womanizing. The media also gave free passes to LBJ , RFK and Teddy Kennedy.

Thomas Dewey would have made a good President. He was an honest man with character and integrity.
