Dabo's Number one thing is CULTURE....

Nov 27, 2022, 11:36 AM

I, like everybody, is upset about yesterday and the offensive performance the last two years. DJ has been so-so, not all his fault, but his play has not been good enough. WRs have been bad, O line has been so-so, and our RBs have outperformed.

Dabo's saying is, "Serve a player's heart, and football will take care of itself". He has hired coaches who played for him (except Streeter), that put God first and that exemplify the culture he has built. Dabo has built an amazing program that won us two National Champs, beat USC 7 times in a row, won 40 games in a row at home... all amazing things. 125 other programs in college football would give thier left nut to be in the position we are right now.

Dabo, even though the last two years have "been down" (10 win seasons and a possible ACC championship this year), still is recruiting at the highest level. He gets kids that have strong families, have faith as a big part of their lives and continue to recruit at the top 10 level.

If he truly puts culture first (and he does), and hires his players that played for him on the coaching staff to maintain his culture, I do understand that it would be very hard for him to part ways with them. I think Dabo is very involved in the play calling as he is on the headset looking at the play sheet every play.

Is it ok to question his decisions? Absolutely and it comes with 11 million a year. I am going to be very interested to see if he brings back Jeff Scott.

When you make that type of money

Nov 27, 2022, 11:39 AM

Especially relative to other coaches, of which he is at the top, your number one priority is to win!! That’s why you are being paid that much money!

While I applaud Dabo’s emphasis on culture

Nov 27, 2022, 11:40 AM

I am of the belief that he overvalues its importance to our previous success.

Our prior success was due to having elite talent and excellent coaches to coach that talent, much more than our culture magically transforming us into a well-oiled machine.

Culture isn’t going to get us back to elite status. Hiring better coaches is.

Yep, culture had better include

Playing great fb and winning….. dabo has stated this in the past as well.

The coordinators didn’t do to bad for being the position for the first year. I think they will improve in the coming years.

I see him using our past success as a polite way to dampen the external pressure and to put into perspective our last ten years.

I also see him (and other coaches) point out drops by the WR, missed blitz pick-ups by RBs and missed assignments by the OL as a way to protect DJs mental fragility. He will call DJ out for one or two plays immediately followed by saying he made a whole bunch of good plays.

He has to do that... he needs to protect his guys and have them know he has their back. BUT.... He also has the duty to run out the best 11. And provide the guys with the best coaching to put them in a place to be successful.

Exactly

Nov 27, 2022, 12:50 PM [ in reply to While I applaud Dabo’s emphasis on culture ]

Culture is one of those things where it’s not a bell curve. A bad culture isn’t going to win much of anything. But the difference in a great culture and a good culture in terms of winning is negligible.

Alabama doesn’t have anywhere near the culture we do, but they are the best program. At least from a winning perspective. Georgia does not have a great culture, but they’re currently the best on the field. Although two years does not make a trend. But it looks like they may be surpassing Alabama.

Look at all the up-and-coming coaches that are copying Dabo‘s blueprint, but getting fired because they’re not winning enough games. No one cares about your culture when you’re losing!

We very easily could have, and some people think should have lost to Wake Forest. We could’ve easily lost a few more games this year and the record would’ve been worse than last year. We were clearly better this year than last year, but I can make an argument, not necessarily. Because last year the problems could be rationalized because of the injuries. We didn’t have that problem this year. It has been obvious this year the problems are terrible coaching, extremely poor fundamentals, still an average at best OL, and of course, the elephant in the room, DJ is in over his head.

Some people think DJ would be great and a first round draft pick in a pro style offense with a good OL. I think there’s merit to that. I think his play would certainly be better because that is a system better matched to his skill set. His skill set and his experience.

But the biggest problem with DJ is in his head. The NFL is full of guys that have tons of talent and world beaters coming off the bench, but they suck the minute they become the starter. What’s the difference? The pressure! The expectations! DJ doesn’t have the confidence and the mental game to be consistent at a high-level as a starter. And anyone that argues otherwise is arguing against the evidence.

Peyton Manning is a great example, but in a slightly different context. He’s the greatest regular season quarterback in the history of the NFL. But he sucked in the playoffs. Compare that to quarterbacks that were not as good talent wise, but they won Super Bowls! And their best games were often in the playoffs and especially the Super Bowl.

I agree with the issues with DJ being mental. I compare it to Tajh when Clowney was on the other side of the line. Something just snapped in Tajh’s head and he just didn’t even seem like the same guy. Good thing was that was the only time you saw it from Tajh. It seems to come from anywhere at any time with DJ.

We can appreciate the culture, the success, and the winning and still be critical of the current state of the program. Turning a blind eye to the inability to develop players and the horrible play calling on offense is what leads to complacency.

We are no longer a team that plays 95 guys a game. That’s a critical failure in the player development and recruiting process. It alone should send shivers down our spines and alert us to where we are headed.

Dabo preaches his culture and casually forgets that Chad Morris and Brent Venables weren't Clemson guys.

The Jimmy's and the Joe's. DW4. TL16. WRU. Power Rangers. The Chad. BV. Pull-back coach. A once aggressive, innovative and win-focused HC. There's your success.

I would look at Chad Morris, and Jeff Scott, if you are looking to change the offense. Both those guys were great recruiters as well.....

Dabo's former players on staff:
Nick Eason (he didn't coach him... was a TB recruit)
Kyle Richardson
Brandon Streeter (didn't coach him. his last year was 1999 - West recruit)
Tyler Grisham
Thomas Austin
Lamanski Hall (Bama guy Dabo played with)
CJ Spiller
Zach Fulmer
DeAndre McDaniel
Taj Boyd
Kavell Conner
Tyrone Crowder
Cole Stoudt
Elijah Turner
Antoine McClain
Jeff Davis (he didn't coach him)

Dabo is building a wall around the program with Clemson guys.... His players are like his sons and to maintain the culture, you fill the building with guys that you coached for 4-5 years to help mold the current guys there. It is a brilliant move on his part. A lot of these guys had NFL aspirations and didn't quite make it and for them to be there to mentor the current players on life after football is invaluable. The downside is what do you do if one of your sons isn't getting the job done. Are you able to make a change. I have 100% faith in Dabo making the right decisions for the program.

Building a wall around may not be the best thing. The fall of the house of usher comes to mind in what the result is trending toward.

He made several TERRIBLE choices that are directly leading the regression of our program. At this point their leadership, from Dabo on down, if providing ZERO motivation and instilling ZERO confidence in the players… that is clear to see on the field. Streeter and Richardson are the worst. If these guys aren’t gone by January we’ll know that the regression of the program will continue.

Oh yeah we should give Jeff Scott a huge raise and bring him

Back to run the same crappy offense we have now !

Some of you people are awful dense for having gone to Clemson.
