What good is running 90 plays if only 10 of them work?

For all the hype of the Super Hi-Test offense that is in the Chad's playbook, why is it that he keeps repeating the same ineffective game plans? The lack of 'setting up' the defense is mind-boggling. He was quoted as saying, "We are running a Lake Travis Middle School scheme" last week. Well, every armchair quarterback in Clemson Nation seems to know what is coming next, much less our opponents. I see absolutely no halftime adjustments--it's like he is reading a ###### that he refuses to deviate from. Are our players that stupid or is Chad that poor of a coach/teacher?

What do you mean by work? If it goes for at least 4 yards
Oct 27, 2013, 9:33 PM

I'd call it a successful play. If I'm guaranteed to get four yards on every play, the only thing I have to worry about is penalties.
As long as these plays result in first downs and positive yardage, the point of the sheer number of plays is to wear down the defense. Just about every defense we play begins to show signs of exhaustion and poor execution once those plays get up in that range...

I guess you need over 20 yds for a play to "work."

Huh? A play is a single snap. You mean 20 yards for a series

No, if I'm averaging 4 yards every time, I'll convert on third down every time...

I am saying by his logic only a 20 yard play is a play that works. Make sense?

I"m not sure what game you were watching

First, I am completely in agreement with folks who have commented on our inability to score TD's in the redzone. It was ugly down there.
However, we moved the ball pretty well all day. We had 2 3 and outs all day, and way more than 10 plays "worked" as you called it.
That's not to say the day was great, we were off for a number of key plays. But the game plan for moving the ball worked Saturday.

of our "bubble screen" days.
I think Tajh's knee is worse than they are letting on ... its affecting his throwing.
Chad Morris is a good OC.
PS ... Venable is a good DC also.

It's that time of year when some of my fellow Clemson fans irritate the crap outta me.
We're 7-1. We're ranked in everyones top 10. We just beat a 5-2 conference foe on the road by two scores. We ran 90 plays and we scored 40 points.
And so some fans, those from the Jesse Palmer/Ed Cunningham school of advanced stupidity, start to question our scheme, our OC, and our overall play?
Give me a break.

aggrandizing our performance without appreciating how easily those mistakes we made Saturday could have turned horrendous. Yeah we have great stats, and that is to be expected against lesser competition. But what if an MD player scooped up the muffed punt from Humprhies and ran it into the endzone? Then they're only down by 6. Those mistakes can turn costly against better competition. It's one thing to make those mistakes and have a funk in a game, but this has continued for several games now. Many of us are just anticipating the outcome of a game if we played that way against someone like GT or USuCk.

First off, what does a muffed punt have to do with the OC?

As to Humphries, he has been one of the most consistent at handling punts that I've seen in some time. Nobody is perfect all the time... and he did recover it. As to TOs in general, I agree. Our TO margin would be outstanding if the O wouldn't have given up so many recently. We're still ahead.

Where did I blame it on the OC? I said we made mistakes

and that could have been a big one. My only point was we are taking steps backwards with ball security...and no it isn't all Humphries, he has been one of the most consistent. His play is merely an example of an issue that seems to continue to be prevalent with our O. I've seen fumbles completely derail an offense...WV and FSU both come to mind. We were inches from POSSIBLY giving MD a tremendous swing in momentum...things could have ended very differently.

If ten of them work perfectly you have 60 points(or 70 with extra points) and win 99% of your football games.

No half-time adjustments, yet 60% of our points came in the second half. Or wait, was that running close to 100 plays that caused that?
Either way only "10 plays worked" so what good does it do?
For ##### sake man.

At his introductory press conference Chad said, if we can only run 3 plays well that work well, then we will only run 3 plays. We are gonna be good at those 3 plays. That will be our identity.
I would be happy if we could find 3 running plays that worked well consistently other than our QB.
I think if we work the outside toss some, that would work but going with Hot Rod up the middle behind a line with no push, that is a running play that isn't working.

An exhausted defense still has to defend all 90 and it keeps the ball out of the hands of the opposing offense.
