This border wall thing is a weird "gotcha" by Trumpists

Somehow, because Biden is foolishly breaking a campaign promise and building onto the ineffective wall that doesn't work.
So wait... Trumpkins are happy about something the incompetent Biden administration is doing and they think this is something to brag about? OK.
Apparently I should feel "bad and stupid" that I believed the wall doesn't work. Which, well, it doesn't. Deweather already posted links showing how people can easily go through the Trump version of the wall.
What I never see people make immigration their white whale EVER complain about is the bigger illegal immigration problem: people coming to America via plane, legally at first, then overstaying visas to remain here illegally. I guess this doesn't produce the same shock at the border as videos and pictures of all those migrants. But that's a far greater problem with more violators than people at the border. And a wall isn't stopping them.
I wonder if someone would feel bad and stupid that they didn't fully research the illegal immigration problem in America and ignored the bigger issue at hand.
YES, the issue at the border is a problem. YES, something has to change. A wall isn't the answer--desperate people (or bad people) will go right throught it, over it, or under it.
The wall was a symbol of idiocy for Trump. He didn't care about a wall; it was just a dumb campaign symbol and an effort to rally up his fervent supporters. Now, it's a just another dumb ### move by the Biden administration who handles all of these immigration problems half-assed.
No one should have been cheering it with either admin.

Chemchem, you are confused.
What is the 180 you are referring to here? Biden's policies on the wall didn't change, he still doesn't think the wall works.
He tried to reappropriate the funds and failed, so they are going back to their original purpose.

Biden and the Dems spent 4 years derp’ing every mention of a border wall.
And now their self-chosen representative is…..building a wall despite promising to not build a single mile and decrying everything about them from being inhumane to environmentally unfriendly.
It’s funny, without any mental gymnastics to think otherwise.

Sir, are you not aware that all Central and South Americans are ninja.
Seriously, if they equipped the walls with some technology that could notify authorities, then walls would probably have a significant impact.

The one they sawzalled? That’s where they’ll be coming through. That’s where you then focus your attention until it’s fixed, because you don’t have the infinite number of other crossing points nearby.
Go ahead. Let’s have a race. I’ll run 50 yards on an open field, and you run the same 50 yards with a wall at the 25 yard line you have to sawzall through

Southern border is 2000 miles and we have roughly 10,000 border patrol agents at the southwest border. Let’s go nuts and assume a hypothetical wall that covers the whole length and is also 2000 miles long for easy math’s sake. That’s roughly .2 miles of wall per person to scan for holes. I really think they could manage.

It will not deter desperate and/or bad people from going over, through, and under it. Already addressed this with Bum's bad fence/dog jumping analogy. We're not talking about dogs, here.
Murc said it best. The wall is a 5th grade response to a bigger problem.

Foreigners coming to America via plane had to have SOME sort of means to get a plane ticket and a passport. Those are real go-getters.
People illegally jumping the border are poor and destitute, and we don't like poor people here, because get a job.
I hope this helps.

I had to look it up but there’s almost 99% compliance with visas. So of 40 million visas given out annually, roughly 500k overstay. That’s not nothing, but it’s nowhere near the almost 3M reported encounters with border guards this year, and that 3M is just the ones we actually formally saw and recorded. Add to the fact that we at least screen the people who get visas to know who they are.
Conflating the two is just a willful distraction.

More people come here illegally by taking advantage of visas. That's a fact. If you're worried about illegal immigrants flooding the system, that MUST be addressed first.
The border is a very serious issue, but focusing solely on that is a head scratcher at best.

We should do everything possible, within reason, to stop illegal entry, and to arrest/deport those who are here illegally for any reason. That should be the objective. The whole problem is, right now, it's not.

If you want to solve the problem of people immigrating and living illegally in the US, a wall is not the solution. A wall is a 5th grader's solution to the problem. As you said, most undocumented immigrants in the US (prior to this migrant crisis) were here on expired visas and those that crossed the southern border didn't typically do it on foot. Money and resources could be better spent elsewhere.
Now if you have millions of migrants rushing the border World War Z style, then yeah, I guess a wall might help. It would still have an environmental impact, which the Biden admin apparently considers less of a priority. And there are still parts of the border where building a wall isn't feasible for various reasons, whether because it's private property or the geography makes it impossible.
The larger issue is why we're getting a flood of migrants in the first place. The bulk of the migrants are arriving from Venezuela. I'm not gonna pretend to know all the ins and outs of that shitshow. I will say that rather than arguing about how best to fight a fire, we should focus on preventing fires in the first place.
But... they say wall bad now they say wall good. Dems dumb.

How on earth do you suppose illegal immigration by plane is a bigger problem than the southern border of the United States?
And do walls really not work if a few people dig under them or launch themselves over them?
That’s like saying jails don’t work because someone escapees from one every once in a while - isn’t it?

solution is simple, in spite of attempts to overcomplicate it with political and ideological fluff and nonsense. Here you go ...
We cannot take everybody nor are we obligated to try. There is a legal process for immigration and those who do not follow that legal process are not welcome and will not be allowed into the U.S.. Any who are here illegally will be deported as quickly as humanly possible. The first priority for the U.S. government is to the American citizen, which includes border security, sensible border policy, and enforcement of our laws. Solving humanitarian crises in other countries and other parts of the world is secondary to the well-being of Americans.
Say that, do that, and don't apologize for it.

the wall should only be one small piece to the solution. Trump went all-in on the wall treating it as a panacea of a host of ills (real or imagined) and the Biden/Demoncrats went all-out - meaning they besmirched the wall as entirely ineffective.
the truth is both were wrong. we need walls, border surveillance, monitoring of those who enter legally but over stay their visas etc.... and we need .... wait for it... many, many, many more immigration judges who so that we can get resolution on claims in a timely manner.

unless you go through the process and do it legally". It's a message democrats, and some republicans don't have the nutz to deliver. It's pure cowardice.
Right now, the message is "Come on in, one and all".
A wall doesn't work alone, but it could be an important part. While many will undoubtedly figure a way over, under, or around it, many will not. In that regard, it will have some effect. Plus, word will get back to others planning on making the journey. The main, overarching problem, and the reason for the current crisis, is a cowardly or traitorous lack of willingness and commitment to solve the problem.

Like Nikki Haley says; "I get dumber every time I listen to you".
Whenever I fly, I see Visa-holding vagrants with nowhere to go or stay, coming off airplanes all the time. NOT!
Stop with the MSMBC talking points. For most Americans, I'm willing to bet that travelers overstaying their Visa's ranks at or near the bottom of their "most concerning" things going wrong with the world. At least people with Visa's are trackable and can be kicked out whenever someone in government decides it's time to do their job. Please fact check me on this. I'll wait for your response.
Speaking of talking points; in 2006, Chuckie Schumer voted to build 700 miles of fence on the U.S.-Mexico border! Please fact-check me on this too. Is it because at the time, it was a winning message? He felt the need to say that even back then when 50 illegals a day was noteworthy. Over 25,000 last weekend alone crossed the Rio Grande and asked to be caught for processing. (Fact check me on this too). Uncle Joe is going to ignore 26 precious environmental regulations and build a worthless 21-miles of wall. It's kabuki theater. He's scrambling. (Those are my opinion, no fact-checking required).
(Completed) walls have always worked. History says so. Early successful civilizations all built walls to protect themselves from invading forces. Why? Because experience showed them this worked. Until illegals wading across a river become a more powerful military force to overrun our walls, completed and patrolled walls- work. May I expound on walls a bit more?
Prisons have what? WALLS! Have you ever noticed that? (Kinda keeps the bad folks in and protects me AND you). The White House does not have walls, but it sure as hell has a nice fence, and is properly patrolled by bad-asses with guns and very cool technologies. Oh yeah, intruders at the White House are actually dealt with.
Joe Biden's beach house- new wall just built around it. We paid for it. He do that because walls don't work; or did "LLJ Cool J" ask Joe to build it before he comes to visit? Just sayin'. (Please fact-check the LLJ Cool J. Please!)
Yes, this border wall does not work. Not complete and no enforcement. Not complete and not enforced is not what President Trump is responsible for. Can't wait to see the wall in 2026 if he wins in 2024.
