Come on man he’s not on full scholarship. I sure as heck would go to a school to get a full ride if I knew I would get offered one. I think his strong spring will get him a chance to get a full scholarship at a power 5.

I don't think that competing had anything to do with it. I think that when Dabo was talking about being 3 scholarships over the limit, he decided to to go somewhere where he could earn a scholly, OR someone at another school heard about Dabo's problem of having to take scholarships back, and they heard about the kid nailing a 51 yarder in the spring game, and they meddled in our program by getting word to Boyd that if he transferred they would offer him a scholarship to come and kick for them. I would bet that it's one of the above

Could be money. For an out of state young man to walk on at Clemson, it is an expensive proposition. With no hope of a scholarship this year, it could just be economics. If he is an NC or Florida resident, there are plenty of schools that would put him on the team right now with a scholarship.
That 51 yarder in the spring game would be all that some of them would need to see. Our players often never want to leave Clemson. That goes way back to Banks McFadden and others...

I hope that he gets a scholarship, but thinking that another school meddled in our program when they heard about the kid kicking a 51 yarder is what would bother me.

Brownell and Dabo have been here apprx the same amount of time.
Dabo has won how many ACC championships?
How many has Brownell won?
Please do not insult anyone by trying to compare the two. Theyre just not on the same playing field...

Unfortunately, it doesn’t change the fact that we just lost a player who very well could’ve been our starting kicker.

Good question. Since theres no scholarship, I dont see how the portal would apply. It may be that the portal is the easiest way for other teams to see that you're available

It's a shame, because he may have been the best kicker of the newbies. I can't blame him if another school has room on the scholarship roles and maybe offered him some NIL money to boot.

Hate to hear that! That kick he hit in the spring game shows he is a game time kicker, it was on a string and would have been good from 62 or 63! I would pull a scholly from a reserve linemen way before a great kicker because if Gunn goes into slump we are in trouble .

You can't just "pull a scholly" from a player unless they're a former walk-on. Every Power 5 football program has guaranteed 4-year scholarships that can't be taken away for performance-related reasons.

EVERY scholarship is a ONE year scholarship. Period. Most coaches won't exercise it, but it's 100% legal and within the NCAA rules to do so.

advantage of the one year deal. SEC teams, including S. Carolina, have been some of the worst offenders of the "oversign and cut" practice. This was years before the portal which has made it so much more difficult to manage the 85 limit.

I suspect this has something to do with the scholarship situation. Is anyone aware of any walk-on kicker who receives a full scholarship offer? I'm thinking that is a relatively small fraternity.

I think you hit the nail square on the head. If he is solid and proves himself in the state for far less money; it's likely he could come back.
But, I suspect you and the other posters who said, "Because he is from out of state and now looking at 100% having to pay for school, it makes financial sense to transfer"!
Who could have predicted XT, Davis, Mascol would all stay? I'm missing some as well. Unfortunate situation; I wish him the very best and I know he would be a transfer portal player Dabo would take back! Assumming he would want to come back later!

Call me nuts, but in Spring game Boyd had 10 more yards on kickoffs than competition and nailed a 51 yd FG with 10 yds to spare. He's probably headed to the SEC.

Agree with you.
Having only watched the O/W game (and no practices), Boyd looked much better than Gunn.
It’s water under the bridge now.
Let’s enjoy R.Gunn’s contribution to another successful season for our FB team.
