SEC these days. But, in the distant past, there were three charter members of the SEC who later LEFT the conference. Who are they, and why did they leave?

Tulane, SMU, and Georgia Tech

conference could be a valid reason to leave, that is not why the teams left. They left long before the Coots came onto the SEC scene.

Georgia Tech left because they were sick of the favoritism Bear Bryant and Alabama always received. Not sure why the other two left.

I can't remember the third.

GT left in the early 60s because of a dispute with Alabama that the league basically ignored (including over-signing players).

Tulane left the SEC in the late 60s simply because they could no longer compete athletically with the other members.

took GT out of the SEC because the SEC would not curb Alabama's oversigning of players under Bear Bryant. Sewanee and Tulane both left because they could no longer compete with the bigger schools on the field of play.

I also recall an incident in a GT/Bama game...

where a GT player was injured as the result of a blatant and dirty hit by a Bama player and the league took no disciplinary action which infuriated Dodd. I think that may have been the final straw that broke the camels back.

Swanee Georgia tech and Tulane
GT -left because of academic reasons the our two were just to small to complete with larger schools

Not sure who 3 is.

Not sure why Tulane left. But, I'm old enough to remember GT leaving. The official reason they gave was scholarship limits. SEC set a limit on scholarships. Independents had no limits. GT said that because they were an engineering school they had to redshirt virtually everyone because it took 5 years to get a degree, so they needed to give more ships than the SEC allowed.

I'm sure there were other reasons, but that is the reason they gave.
