Give that up. Not happening unless they get completely excluded from the playoff due to not being in a conference. If that happens it won’t be the ACC…

Love them or hate them, for us this can only help. Gives us a pretty much guaranteed high rating game every year against a national brand. Helps recruiting. Helps revenue.

As long as the B1G, and brands like Clemson keep getting on their knees and servicing them they will never join a conference. Cut them off from being able to schedule big games. Did we not learn anything from Swoffie's stupid move in 2020?

Our fans probably don’t want to hear this, but we need them right now as much as they need us. Our ACC SOS sucks. Now that the $EC and BIG are trying to get rid of the auto top 4 to conference champs, we win the conference and we get what, a 12 seed? We have to do something to boost our SOS until we get out of the ACC. Who knows when that will happen.

Clemson and every ACC school gets an extra $3M per year based on ND being a partial member. ND can’t be forced to join (full) and we need the money so your stupid move greatly benefits Clemson

If I interpreted your post correctly. I’m afraid Neff is doing this to pacify the fan base in the event we don’t ever leave the ACC. Really hope that is not the case! Lots still to unfold… I just want out of the ACC, at all cost

The concern is that when the SEC expands to 9 conference games, UGA and OU will drop us. Neff is doing the right thing and covering our ###.

Also this agreement is not tied to the ACC and can be carried over no matter what conference Clemson is in.

This is objectively a positive development for Clemson - a win for financials, recruiting, visibility, etc.

Some folks will whine even about good news. Does it mean we are in a P2 conference? No, but we weren’t yesterday either and it certainly doesn’t hurt to keep Clemson as strong as possible until that time comes to pass.

For me the interesting thing is this is aggressively hostile to the ACC and the rest of the member institutions. Now ND only has 3 slots annually to rotate among the other 15 institutions that aren’t named Clemson or Stanford. If they do that “fairly”, the other schools will get the benefit of the ND boost to the TV revenue in the formula once every 5 years , and only once a decade for a home game. Of course, nothing is done fairly so I’m sure FSU and Miami will be in line next to ask to play ND more often. Perhaps Wake can look to play ND once a century by the time it all shakes out.

It’s not fair and not very collegial, but good job by Neff here looking out for Clemson’s best interests. The weaker schools look out for their best interests by holding Clemson and FSU hostage, so we truly owe them no loyalty at this point.

Assuming the SEC 9 game schedule doesn’t happen and cause Georgia (and also LSU and OU in the other years) to back out of our agreements, it would have to be either the G5 or the FCS team that gets cut. So in 2029, either ECU or our oldest ever rival, Furman.

Since G5 games count toward bowl eligibility, FCS games could be in jeopardy but I would hate to see that because I know our in state FCS schools depend on the games with both us and the coots for their budgets. Plus with Furman, while I know it’s never competitive and quite frankly boring, they are a part of our history. Now for the coots of course, we know very well that Furman and the Citadel can beat them.

This will allow Clemson to make up some ground on other programs

Is it ideal ? No , but it should result in Clemson getting a larger share of the pie than other members.

Swofford left us in a bad spot.

Now we have to make the most of what we have going forward.

It's a lot like recruiting in that regard. We don't always get the top players ,
so we have to do more with less.

With the recent hires it appears we have learned that lesson

I am curious the mechanics of how this was possible in the first place. Did Swofford’s original agreement with ND really just allow them to choose the 5 schools they wanted to play from the ACC to fulfill their football obligation in order to secure membership for their Olympic sports? I doubt it.

My guess..voting to admit Cal, Stanford and SMU (which Clemson and FSU voted against) opened up this opportunity. The league agreed to allow ND to keep their rivalry with Stanford and let that game count toward the 5-game obligation to the ACC each year. Once that precedent has been set, there was nothing to stop Neff from making this deal with ND and nothing Jim Phillips or the other ADs could do to stop it.

Just spitballing. Obviously the other wildcard is we never had the new revenue sharing model before based on media value, so we’ve never been more incentivized to care about TV ratings quite so much. But I just don’t think it would have been legally possible without the exception already having been made for ND-Stanford, and we know the ACC loves to pay dozens of attorneys.

I'm not quite sure why there's negative feeling about this deal. I think it's a great deal for both teams. Not to mention the fans; two top teams playing each other every year is great for both fanbases.

As for ND's partially joining the ACC rather than joining as a full member, I think it has worked out well for both sides. Notre Dame doesn't get anything like the same level of revenue sharing as the full members do, and it brings a lot of revenue into ACC games. To fans who go to Clemson games regularly, I can't imagine that you would boycott the Notre Dame games because ND should be in a conference or whatever. For myself, Clemson is one of the bigger games on the schedule when we play, right up there with Ohio State or USC. I'm excited that we're going to play more often.

If you look at the conference question this way, suppose you had a successful small business, successful enough that a lot of the competition wanted to buy it. Would you sell? If you did, you might have fewer headaches, and a more even revenue stream. But you would also no longer be your own boss. Why would you give up your autonomy in the business that you built, if it was entirely viable and capable of competing with the larger companies? I understand that people might not like Notre Dame's partial independence, but I don't think it comes from arrogance. I think it's more of if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it kind of thing.

Maybe this was a bad deal for the ACC, but maybe not. The arguments in favor of the deal for the ACC usually have to do with increased TV revenues, better-than-average attendance at games, and so on. After all, a whole lot of people like to watch Notre Dame win, but probably as many or more tune in to watch Notre Dame lose! From what impartial assessments I've read (not easy to find), the ACC appears to have done very well by the arrangement, as has Notre Dame.

I do understand why so many people dislike Notre Dame. At least, I'm pretty sure that it's for a lot of the same reasons that I don't like the Yankees. But I still think the arrangement is as good for the ACC as it is for Notre Dame. After all, a perennial national fencing champion can't be all bad. The ACC didn't have one of those before. :)

In any case, I'm delighted that we're going to be playing every year. I'm looking forward to a lot of great games. Here's hoping that both teams will be in the hunt for a national championship every year.
