TNET: Paul Finebaum: "Urban Meyer is going to flame out"

Paul Finebaum: "Urban Meyer is going to flame out"

The Jacksonville Jaguars should be one of the most entertaining and improved teams in 2021. They have their franchise quarterback in Trevor Lawrence, an explosive rookie running back in Travis Etienne, and a new head coach in Urban Meyer. The Jaguars were fined $200,000 this week, plus Meyer was pen Read Update »

You may be right on both counts. But Finebaum squared up on this one. Don't give him too much credit because Meyer always -- always -- flames out. Three years maybe, and hope he doesn't take our guys down with him. He can wreck a football player, and has. He had Tebow for what, four years? He never progressed beyond his senior HS year, and entered the NFL as one of the worst passing QBs ever.

Lawrence's much criticized view that there is more to his life than football is exactly what he needs to survive this guy.

You don't have to be any great prognosticator to know that the past is a pretty good predictor of the future. I believe that, just as in previous stops, Meyer will have great success, but, just as in previous stops, his obsessive personality will cause him issues, as already evidenced by the current fines.

I give him about 4 years at the most, during which time, I will be very surprised if the Jags do NOT have great success. But then, a combination of his obsessive personality and workaholic mentality will cause him further medical issues, and he will be out of coaching again.

But, at least he will know he had his NFL shot, he'll never have to say, "What If?"

Paul Finebaum knows as much about NFL coaching as I do about being a Blue Whale.

the NFL is not as demanding on your time as it is in college. He will not be dealing with a bunch of kids, have to recruit, or worry about the NCAA breathing down his back. he can focus on coaching, and just coaching.

whether or not this is a better fit for him, we will see. The stakes and pressure to win will be much greater and will not be able to just line up with superior players and dominate, he will have to be on his game every Sunday.

Paul and ESPiN sure piling it on Urban

While they may turn out to be right, the amount of minutes and hours these clowns have spent criticizing him could’ve been spent talking about the 500 other pro and college teams worth a damnn

I thought that PF was a college/SEC commentator. Why is he talking about Urban and the NFL? Oh right...he left the SEC, last coached for Ohio State, AND chose a Clemson player as #1 in the draft. While Meyer might eventually flame out, it's obvious that's not why he's lingering on the subject. With everything that's currently happening in sports, 4-5 years down the NFL road is certainly not the most relevant topic.

This may be a subject Finebaum …

Jul 3, 2021, 10:32 AM

Has a correct opinion on … I know … few and far between.

Urban may be a tool. But my take is his discipline and motivation to win will be good for the Jags and TL16 in the short term. Then Meyer will burn out like he has a track record of doing. Like Harbaugh, when he leaves, few will miss him. Then the Jags should have a long list of coaches who want to coach a Trevor and an upcoming team.

Hard to agree with Fumebalm though.

I also have serious doubts about Urban Meyer in the NFL

Jul 3, 2021, 11:08 AM

For the sake of Trevor and Travis, I hope he's wrong (yet again).

If Meyer coaches more than 3-4 years in Jacksonville, I'll be surprised.

Past performance is no guarantee of future events.

But, that's the way to bet.

Easy prediction: Meyer will flame out.

A much more bold prediction: Meyer will become this generation's Bill Belichek in the NFL.

Finebaum should get little credit for predicting it will probably snow in Colorado this December.

I strongly dislike Urban Meyer but will admit he has a great football mind (especially compared to most college football coaches).

However, the NFL has lots of guys with great football minds and there is no reason to think UM will stand out from the crowd. Comparing him to Belichick is nuts.

During his era of great success, UM's biggest advantage in CFB was his ability to recruit and close the sale with parents. That won't help him in the NFL.

NOTE: UM's charisma skills on the trail were clearly eroding his last couple of years at OSU. There are some unkind stories out there.
