I know very little about soccer. But I know a red card is a bad thing. So, I did some googling.

Turns out if your team has to play the rest of the match down one player after getting a red card, you only have a 23% chance to win. That is one super powerful penalty.
That said, I think we'd beat USC in football with only 9 players on the field.

the harshest penalty in all of sports. That one frequently results in a goal for the opposition plus a man down for the rest of the match.

After having slept on it, I am even more boggled that this penalty exists. The worst thing in football is a Targeting penalty where the player is ejected and has to sit out half of the next game. But, the team still gets to substitute the player, giving them a full 11 players on the team.
I don't know whether the penalty system in soccer is brilliant or obscenely cruel. But it certainly puts a large amount of power in the hands of the officials. I bet those officials get some MONSTER bribes.
