TNET: Former Clemson WR reportedly will not be extended by Chargers

Former Clemson WR reportedly will not be extended by Chargers

A 'WRU' member might have a new NFL home in 2022. ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler is reporting that the Los Angeles Chargers are not expected to extend a new contract ($) to receiver Mike Williams after the 2021 season. Williams is currently playing on his fifth-year option worth $15.7 million befor Read Update »

I have no idea how these NFL contracts, etc. work.

All 1st round picks have a standard 4 year deal with a 5th-year option. That 5th year option pays out the average of the top 10 salaries of the same position from the previous year. So since it can be kind of expensive, if a player has been largely disappointing, the team generally will not even use the 5th year option. Williams is playing on his 5th year option this year with the ability to become a free agent next year.

The Chargers currently want to extend him to a contract that pays likely somewhere in the neighborhood of $15M/year because they're already paying one of the league's best WRs in Keenan Allen almost $20M and because while Williams has had some pretty good numbers, he's incredibly inconsistent game to game, and almost constantly has some sort of minor injury issue. Take it from a guy who has had him on several fantasy teams.

Williams thinks that he's going to go off this year in a dynamic passing offense with Herbert, and if he's right, he'll get more on the open market next off-season than what LA is wanting to pay him now. If he's wrong, he'll still net almost $16M this year, and probably still wind up with a contract not too far off from that unless he gets seriously injured.

Not surprised! Named one thing the Chargers ever did that was smart!

Read the actual article, not the skewed, biased Tnet blurb. Williams isn't interested in reaching a long-term deal because he thinks he's going to light it up this year and get paid like a #1 instead of the injury-prone #2 he's been up to this point. Maybe he's right, maybe he's not, but it's not like the Chargers don't want him. They also already have one of the best WRs in the league making around $20M per year, so they'd be really stupid to tie up such a huge percentage of their cap in the WR position.

They drafted Mike Williams, they drafted LaDainian Tomlinson

They drafted Junior Seau, Rodney Harrison, Antonio Gates, Kellen Winslow, Dan Fouts, Charlie Joiner, John Jefferson... they've done some smart things, just haven't sustained the smart things they have done... LOL

They have had some great players, but they never seem to do anything with them.

The guy was always injured. Why would they sign him again? He has all the talent in the world, but he is injured too often and unavailable.

Hasn't played full season yet in 4yrs. Can't pay guy WR#1 money if he only plays 70% of the games. He is lucky to get paid what he is already. When he plays he has great numbers but he is not stable enough yet

Hope he goes to a better team. What I can't believe is he's been gone 4 years already

That's actually a good team. They need some defense upgrades but Herbert is going to be a stuf NFL QB. Had him on my fantasy team initially as my QB2 but moved him to QB1 after Dak went down and after first couple games, he was smoking it.

I think Chargers are full-on playoff team this year.

Agree he's been injury prone but the few times I've watched Chargers games, he's lit it up.

William's talent and unrealized potential are high, but #1 Kenan Allen is a star and Williams is often hurt. Hopefully, Williams stays healthy and excels in 2021.
