Clemson temporarily requires masks in University facilities at semester start

Following the South Carolina Supreme Court decision announced earlier today which permits higher education institutions to require a universal mask mandate, Clemson will require masks in all of its statewide buildings including classrooms, instructional facilities, offices, labs, and residential and Read Update »

With no mask mandate, Pickens county has a surge of Covid:

Aug 18, 2021, 2:50 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson temporarily requires masks in University facilities at semester start ]

The Pickens County School District in South Carolina has moved back to virtual learning, after experiencing an outbreak of COVID-19 cases.

The district held an emergency session Friday where they announced a plan to shift temporarily to learning remote.

WSPA-TV reported that as of Friday afternoon, 142 students in the district had tested positive for COVID-19 and 26 employees had. Another 634 students were in quarantine, which was about five percent of the student body.

Very disappointed in this court decision.

Aug 17, 2021, 8:28 PM

University of Florida tried a mask mandate and they lost in court to a student. I’m sure this will get appealed to a higher level. A District Court of some type.

And it’s not based in science boys and girls. Masks only have a limited effectiveness and that’s if you’re wearing the right type and wearing it correctly. Most people aren’t doing any of that.

This is virtue signaling!

This is to let people that are controlled by their emotions and feelings feel better about things when it’s not really doing anything.

Let people get vaccinated that wanna get vaccinated let people that don’t want to get vaccinated not get vaccinated let people control their own lives. And no random testing. If you don’t have symptoms you don’t need to be tested because the PCR test is highly unreliable and is showing tons of people testing positive that actually don’t have symptoms and don’t have Covid.

And far those out there that think Covid is this dangerous scary thing here are the latest numbers: around 650,000 Americans have died from Covid and we have a population of roughly 328,.5 million people which gives you a death rate of .0019%.

By comparison the Spanish flu of 1918 killed somewhere between 3% and 5% of the American population. And that was an America that was very different than the America today. It was a more rural and agrarian, or else today we are much more urban and suburban. And we are far more unhealthy with epidemic levels of obesity and diabetes. Yet Covid has only killed 1/5 of 1% of the population compared to at least 3% of the population by the Spanish flu.

Furthermore We know for a fact that if you are under 25 you are very unlikely to die. Only around 1200 people under the age of 25 have died in America from Covid.

The fact that schools are doing this is just beyond stupid and not following the science.

That's actually .19%, but your point is well taken. The risk is very small, if we can trust the numbers. I really don't know what, nor who, to trust, but I just turned 70, and I am leaning on the side of caution. Just me, and I don't call the police when I see a maskless individual. I want us to return to normal and play football this fall. I want to see us stomp uga's brains out, but I'll have on a mask while watching from my seat.

I’m with you there! If you handed me a jar of 500 skittles and told me one of them was fatal, I think I’d pass.

Don’t know why masks became this symbol of independence or servitude. Somehow I think it has something to do with disappointment in the election. To each their own, I suppose. If masking up helps protect myself and others, a small inconvenience to pay, in my opinion. Like wearing a seatbelt or washing your hands after using the restroom.

i feel like you guys get a daily "talking points" memo and all regurgitate the same language quasi verbatim

one of us...one of us

all I know is they try to make my little kids breathe their own air all day and in gym class again, I will not be pleased

unacceptable

- during the height of covid, my kid wore a mask to school all day and then played with 200 mask less kids in thunder dome daycare ..then back on for the next school drop off

+ two whole mask less summers in thunder dome - playing capture the flag and breathing all over each other

masks the kids wear are so horribly ineffective - (when they are worn correctly which has to be what 2 % of the time)

then you read about the depression, the kids getting behind in their learning, other psychological damage... et al

combine with the CDC numbers for elementary schoolers

stupidity

Easy on the ad hominem, chief.

Quasi Verbatim is the best oxymoron I’ve heard in years.

Put the keyboard away for a few plays, you are getting mad about nothing at nobody. No ones happy about the situation and obviously a lot of us disagree about the severity of the issue and the means to mitigate the damage.

Also this article isn’t about the elementary school students being compelled to wear masks to elementary schools they are compelled to attend. This article is about a secondary school making a business decision. No one at Clemson is compelled to do anything every individual has choice and recourse.

Aug 17, 2021, 10:47 PM [ in reply to Re: Very disappointed in this court decision. ]

In that analogy you know one of those is a fatal skittle. If I told you in a crowd if 500 people one of them absolutely had Covid how would you respond?

Do they have symptoms or did they simply have a positive PCR test? Second, just because someone has Covid and you’re standing right next to them it doesn’t mean you’re going to get Covid. So you posted a ridiculous analogy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That is a stupid analogy.

Aug 17, 2021, 11:27 PM

You are missing the point of the analogy. The point isn’t to be a 1 to 1 representation of the SRI model. The point is it’s just a skittle, the risk isn’t worth the reward.

Humans are inherently bad at assessing risk. Google it, the articles are amazing. Covid is another example of humans not taking appropriate measure of something because it is quiet and dull, as opposed the loud and gory like mass shootings or drunk driving accidents.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thanks for catching my error.

Aug 17, 2021, 10:44 PM [ in reply to Re: Very disappointed in this court decision. ]

Yes. It’s .0019 or .19%

I forgot to move the decimal point when I added the percent. Thank you for the correction.

Remember during football season when Dabo and a lot of people were wearing those things that look like fisherman where you pull it up over your face? That does absolutely nothing. That is pure showmanship. That’s why you know these mask mandates are ########. Because as long as you have something on your face people are happy. But the reality is unless you are wearing a true surgical mask or an N 95 mask you’re not doing anything. And even an N 95 or surgical mask only works in certain situations and you have to be wearing it the right way and even then there’s a lot of debate and very sketchy science on how effective they really are.

The reality is you can’t control a virus. Sooner or later everyone is going to be exposed. Smallpox nor the plague wiped out humanity. We didn’t have vaccines until after World War II but humanity has survived perfectly well.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I usually write .0019 or .19%.

Aug 17, 2021, 10:52 PM

I simply forgot to move the decimal.

What matters is out of a country of nearly 329,000,000 people less than 700,000 people have died. Whereas the Spanish flu back in 1918 killed between 3% and 5% of the population. Covid has killed 1/5 of 1% of the population. And 80% of them only died because of comorbidities.

The Spanish flu killed young healthy people. Covid is not killing young healthy people.

And oh by the way down we know the death count is actually overinflated because we know for a fact you could die in a car accident or die of a heart attack or die from cancer and if you have Covid they are going to record it as a Covid death. Then there are all the people that died in nursing homes because of stupid decisions and all the people that died because of crappy treatment and care by the medical profession.

Re: I usually write .0019 or .19%.

37M cases 623k Deaths .. which is 1.68% death rate when you catch covid.

there are people who died and never were diagnosed
there are likely a greater # of people who were never diagnosed and still lived

in the old days (2 yrs ago) you were told not to go to the dr unless you have a fever over 101 and/or if you were sick more than 3 days. But see those numbers aren’t accurate either.

Aug 17, 2021, 10:58 PM

A positive PCR test does not mean you have Covid if you understand how the PCR test works. The PCR test does not even test for Covid. Only people that should be getting tested or people that have clear symptoms.

There are millions of people that have had Covid but were asymptomatic and have never been tested. So 37 million people divided by the number of deaths is grossly inaccurate. Because we have no way of knowing how many millions of other people have actually been exposed to Covid and had Covid but never showed symptoms and were never tested.

We also know for a fact that only around 1200 people under the age of 25 have died from Covid we also know for a fact that 80% of the people that died from Covid are either 65 or older with a weak immune system or had diabetes and obesity as comorbidities.

Less than 10% of the people that died from Covid died only from Covid.

When you look at the data and the numbers there’s no way to not understand that Covid is simply not a very deadly virus.

That is the danger of it. You had mild symptoms and never knew you had covid. Meanwhile, going maskless, you would have spread to upteen people , many of whom would not have taken it as well as you did , who could suffer serious illness, hospitalization, intubation, or death.

Aug 17, 2021, 11:02 PM

I accidentally did not move the decimal point. I typically type .0019 or .19%. By only putting one number which I don’t normally do I accidentally typed the wrong thing.

But that doesn’t change the numbers. Less than 700,000 people have died in a country with 328.5 million people. That is a death rate of 1/5 of 1%.

Those are real numbers from the CDC and Johns Hopkins.

Where is the data wrong?

Where is the misinformation?

Here is another fact. Only around 1200 people under the age of 25 have died from Covid. And most of them had other health issues.

Less than 10% of the people that have died from Covid died only from Covid. 80% were 65 or older or had obesity and diabetes issues.

So please show me the data that proved that Covid is a deadly virus.

People under the age of 30 have a significantly higher chance of dying from drug addiction, alcoholism, suicide, a car accident, etc.

Aug 17, 2021, 11:11 PM

Those were vaccines that were created through the normal process that had been around for decades and that had been proven to be extremely safe.

Covid is not FDA approved, it is going through a rushed process, it is using a new technology for vaccines, yes I know mRNA has been around, for cancer, not for vaccines. And these vaccines are being pushed under emergency authorization.

The Bush administration tried to get soldiers to take an experimental non-FDA approved vaccine. A handful of soldiers sued and they won. Because that is happening soon.

Also, the research supporting this vaccine wasn’t rushed. It was actually substantial research that was made possible due to an incredible amount of government funding and coordination.

At this point, the COVID vaccine is significantly more researched than almost all prescription medications. If what we have now isn’t enough evidence for someone, I have my doubts that they are truly open-minded here.

Aug 18, 2021, 9:07 AM [ in reply to Vaccine mandates have been upheld by the Supreme Court multiple times ]

The key to this is the 10th amendment and the police power - some folks forget about this one.

Folk forget the "health" or public health is actually a power reserved for the state. While the Feds do and can lean (that is more of the grey area with a lot of judicial history) on using the states for specific purposes (like the 21yo drinking age).

So basically, the state always has the right to coercer behavior in issues surrounding public behavior and while the Fed can't make the states a mechanism for that, they have other options.

Considering there is no "takings" taking place with a vaccine, it does not run into other issues.

But that’s not how reality works. Different colleges are handling this radically differently. Then there are also lawsuits that have been eon against mandates.

The reality is Cove it is contagious but it is not extremely deadly. We never ever should’ve had lockdowns. We never ever should’ve had nor should we be continuing to have widespread testing of people that do not have symptoms. None of this is following the science all the data and it’s #### sure not following precedent of how we have handled actually far more deadly viruses in the past including the recent past.

I especially agree with that last statement. However, the state/university as an agent of the state can step in within this specific cause.

Thus is precisely whereby government can and should interfere as it is a constitutional extension of the 10th and the police power.

Public Health is literally #1 in the police power (Health, Safety, Morals, and General Welfare) and these are powers reserved for the state (not the people). It is literally why you can go throwing feces around in a town square no mater how much the coots attempt to exercise their rectums freedom. That power lies with the state, not the individual.

A state-level mandate is still small government for as long as it is creating a mandate and not creating decades of government action and financial outlays (unlike welfare, etc). Considering that there is no "takings" happening, then there isn't any real "freedom" being trampled.

Im sure y’all remember how magical August was with the start of each new semester at Clemson. Feelings of excitement, nervousness that’s hard to match. I’m still young enough to remember it. And let’s be honest, a lot of it was thanks to checking out all the “talent” on campus after having been away during the summer.

Masks just create a less fun and more depressing environment with what is supposed to be some of the best few months of these young peoples lives.

Suicide, the second leading cause of death amongst teens (covid is not number 1), are only up over 50% since the start of the pandemic. So it’s a real science based, humanistic approach to continue the post-covid status quo for this demographic. Knowingly letting more teens die of suicide to maintain our illusion of safety is real science.

Just require vaccinations!

Aug 18, 2021, 4:42 AM

FFS! Just require vaccinations! For reference, I've never voted for a Democrat in my life. Since this seems to be political, my voting history is more relevant than the science involved.

The delta variant (and soon the epsilon variant) exists because unvaccinated people have gotten infected and allowed the virus to mutate. I absolutely hate wearing masks. And I'm ticked off that the people that decided not to get the FREE vaccine have allowed COVID to persist and mutate. This cycle will not end until vaccinations are required for everyone, world-wide.

Masks are minimally effective. But it's something organizations feel they can do without facing lawsuits. The federal government must take action if this is to ever get resolved. The FDA has bungled this entire situation.

But if you refuse to get vaccinated, in my opinion, you've lost any morale high-ground to complain about being forced to wear a mask.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You do realize the delta variant didn't originate in the US?

Aug 18, 2021, 8:53 AM

Neither did the new, potentially vaccine-resistant lambda variant. Unless you vaccinate every person in the world which is never going to happen or entirely shut down the US to international travel and close the border, we are not keeping variants out. The unvaccinated in the US are not helping in terms of controlling spread, sure, but blaming everything solely on unvaccinated people in the US is just a convenient scapegoat.

quote from Nobel Peace Prize Virologist Prof. Luc Montagnier

Aug 18, 2021, 9:27 AM [ in reply to Just require vaccinations! ]

The prominent virologist explained that “there are antibodies, created by the vaccine,” forcing the virus to “find another solution” or die. This is where the variants are created. It is the variants that “are a production and result from the vaccination.”

...so there's that. Point is...we really don't know what we're talking about yet. We are the experiment and in 2-3 years we will probably have a proper process to control/manage covid 19.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: quote from Nobel Peace Prize Virologist Prof. Luc Montagnier

Aug 18, 2021, 9:41 AM

You are missing a key part.

The unvaccinated provide a stable host population that acts as the primary vector of the virus. Imagine the unvaccinated as bust coverage and that is what you have. Doesn't matter if the other DBs are holding their own, it only takes one.

To find another solution, the virus needs time and hosts to infect. If more folks were vaccinated, then the virus would have fewer vectors and less "time" to find another way.

I will give you two examples. A bank robber has more time to work on the vault when you leave the front door open.

OR

Next and perhaps better. With vaccines, you are making the virus QB go through their WR/checkdown. If it takes to long or coverage is too good, the Virus QB is sacked. Do that three times and the possession is over. However, with the unvaccinated, you are basically getting hit with a 15 yard penalty and a new set of downs for every infection.

Even a Vaccine that is 50% effective is still useful as that is a deadend 1/2 of the time for the virus to "find a way". I think the current options of the vaccine are still 65% or there abouts depending on the type. do the math over time, reduce the number of cases by 2/3 each cycle and you will watch the virus peeter down.

---

The other side, Vaccines keep people out of the hospital. Covid's death-rate isn't bad when you have access to proper medical care (about 2%), but it increases 5X without it (nearly 10%). However, it can generate cases at such an alarming rate that it overwhelms the health care system (what happened in Italy early on). Thus my region's 150 ICU beds only need the a few severe critical cases in a region of over 1/2 million to reach capacity.

Pediatrician in Columbia and Tiger alum, past president of the SC Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics so I've been around a while. So much misinformation in this thread that I had to respond. So here's the deal. The delta variant has been a game changer. Far more contagious and younger people, including kids and adolescents, are getting much sicker. Our pediatric ICU in Columbia has been full for weeks and holding patients in the peds ER. Not all COVID patients but some of them are. Every day. More COVID hospital admits to our Children's Hospital every day. More young adult admits to our hospitals every day. More young adult deaths from COVID every day.
We know that in-person learning is best for kids, and undoubtedly best for college students as well. If we want our schools and colleges to stay open during this surge of delta variant, we have to take some steps to mitigate the spread of the virus. That includes masking, increasing vaccination rates, hand hygiene and physical distancing when possible. All of these measures together give us our greatest protection. None of them alone will get us where we need to be.
Masks are safe. Masks have been shown to be effective. Masks have NEVER been shown to cause physical or cognitive problems for children or adults.
If we want Clemson to succeed this fall with a safe semester for students and a successful and complete football season, then we have to take the steps necessary to get us there. Right now, during this delta variant COVID surge, one of those steps is masking.
