When a win feels like a loss: Tigers show there is still work to be done

It hasn’t been a secret that the Clemson football program has been on a fast track to the College Football Playoff this season, but the defense that showed up Saturday night in Death Valley won’t win any national championships. Full Story »

To be totally honest, the players look disinterested in playing this game. Here's a few factors i believed contributed to this lack luster win.

1) 7:00 PM game
2) It was extremely cold
3) Looking ahead to Pittsburgh, it's hard to get pumped up for little brother
4) Tre Lemar was out
5) We played like we knew we were winning
6) Vegas rules, the line was -26, Clemson won by 21, Vegas wins again
5) The coots played out of their mind

This actually would have been a more lopsided game if not for a few plays:
1) Amari Rodgers phantom call
2) The weird defensive penalty on #99 Clelan Ferrell (Never seen that ever...)
3) 2-3 obvious PI calls on USC
4) SEC refs (All i have to say)
5) 2 missed interceptions by Tanner Muse

In my opinion, i would not read too much into this game. Just my two cents.

We'll probably beat Pittsburgh by 50 next Saturday...A win is still a win.

+1 bc after the clock expires at the end of the 4th Qtr and the team ahead in points is the winner, and I give that anyone who believes a win is win bc it is. As stated last night, I feel like we lost something, not the game, but a lot of respect from it being said that we had the best D in the country, and that feeling now makes me feel kinda empty bc, the best defense never gives up that many yards through the air against your most hated rival unless maybe they were ranked #1 in the country in passing yards, but they wasn't.

They (coots) played against a team that played against a weak Chattanooga team that is in 4th place in the Southern conference, and they won 49-9, and Bentley only threw for 339 yards against Chattanooga in the brice. The very next week he comes into our house, and he throws for 510 yards under a defining crowd noise. Our fan base done their job, and our D didn't, and our front 4 that is said to be the best in college FB couldn't get to Bentley unless he just held onto the ball to long, and that wasn't very often!!!

So should we give our 2016 natty trophy back because we slept on Pitt? Should Bama give back last year’s trophy cause they slept on Auburn? The list is long for championship teams who lost or played down to inferior competition. You may not be aware but bringing your A game every week is difficult.

I am guessing you are referring to all the 15-0 teams over the past several..... Oh, wait... there are none! Every team to win the championship in the playoff era has lost at least one game. 12-0 is not sleeping and beating your in-state rival by 3 TDs is pretty freaking awesome. 70 wins overall... 5 in a row... 12-0... That's State Championship Caliber 100%

like his "Dabo is not the right choice for Clemson." story way back when he was new with Tiger Net.

Our defense had a bad night against the long pass, but they did hold them out of the EZ twice from inside the 5 yard line when Muschamp made it 4-down territory.

We had a bad game against the Pitt shovel pass a couple of years ago. We fixed that and we'll fix this.

Too much moaning and groaning by fans and pundits.

Re: TNET: When a win feels like a loss: Tigers show there is still work to be done

Nov 25, 2018, 9:17 AM

I'm sorry this is an asinine article. Let me ask a question, which defense do you think is the real one and which one is the outlier? The defense that has played almost all season in the top 5 and top 15 in most if not all the defensive categories or the one game against your bitter in-state rival when emotions are extremely high? The defense that plays sound fundamentally sound almost all season or the one game they looked lost and busted all over? I don't know about y'all but it is hard to play that type of defense week in and week out and yes it was the worst possible time to play that way not because of the yardage and the 35 you gave up but because of who it was. What do they say about rivalry games all the time, you throw the record books out the window because some weird and wacky things can and tend to happen. Thats because of all the emotions dealt with in a rivalry. Not one person on this Earth though Bama would lose to Auburn last year but they did. No one would believe that yesterday was Georgia's first win at home against Georgia Tech in the last 3 games there. Or how about ND beating USC by one touchdown. Like the article mentioned being the #1 defense in Michigan and getting ran out of the house allowing 62 points and a load of yards. Things happen and there is nothing more that the Lamecocks wanted more than to make sure Clemson didn't reel off a 5 game win streak of their own. All I ask is to not over analyse it because it was one game that has more meaning than any other game on the schedule where guys tend to try and do more and where fluke things tend to happen. To me it is a blessing in disguise because it allows Clemson to refocus and realize they have to play better like they have almost all season and not the one outlier everyone is going to freak out about.

I am glad to see that there are still many that disagree with David Hoods comments on this game. Dabo would certainly not agree with him. I like all of you, agree. This is still a rivalry game it's SC and any and everything can happen. Our defense doesn't need a lot of work. They just need to go back to playing like they have all year. Like the winners they are. I for one have no doubts that they will.

The defense had a bad game. So what? The narrative of “Clemson can’t compete with the mikes of Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins, or Tua T. With a defensive performance like this” seems to forget one thing: the Clemson offense. What has the OSU or OU defense shown, this entire year, to illustrate they would be able to stop Clemson’s offense either? They haven’t. It was one game, and Clemson gave up 600 yards of offense and 35 points, but they still WON THE GAME by 21. This was the FIRST GAME ALL YEAR in which an opponent scored a TD in the first quarter. Think about that. Think about how hard that is to do. Good grief
The defense had a bad game. The real issue is that some Clemson fans and media seem to think that if Clemson doesn’t win every game 52-3, then something “is definitely wrong.” ??. People seem to forget that we are ONLY FIVE YEARS removed from a FIVE GAME LOSING STREAK to South Carolina, and we are only seven years removed from a 70-33 thrashing in the Orange Bowl. Furthermore, ONLY EIGHT YEARS AGO, Clemson didn’t even have a winning season. Lastly, Clemson is about to play for its FOURTH ACC TITLE IN A ROW. I’m 40 years old. I have faithfully followed Clemson football since 1986-87. The Tigers didn’t win the conference for 20 flipping years. They are about to play for their FOURTH ONE IN FOUR YEARS. Some people have TOTALLY lost perspective. Dabo is right. Calm down, disgruntled folks.

ZONE DEFENSE / SOFT COVERAGE

Nov 25, 2018, 10:22 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: When a win feels like a loss: Tigers show there is still work to be done ]

I have noticed a pattern within our defense. When we run zone with soft coverage one of a four things happen.

1. The Front Four gets a sack or a tackle for loss because there's a mismatch between our defensive line and the opponent's offensive line.
2. The opponent throws an interception due to the pressure from the front four of our defensive line.
3. The opponent throws an incomplete pass due to the pressure from the front four of our defensive line.
4. The opponent throws a pass for considerable yardage due to having a WR wide open.

We play best out of the nickel package on press cover two or three. We need to get back to playing assignment football. Our secondary needs to cover their man and stick to him like glue. When they do that, the QB cannot throw a pass accurately because no WRs are open. So, either the pocket collapses and the QB gets sacked or is forced to throw it away to prevent a sack.

This was also an issue during the Duke game and the Louisville game. Our secondary has created a pattern of leaving WRs open on an island all by themselves. We've been burned several times by wide open receivers. Something has to be done about this, it has to be corrected or else it won't be us holding up the Oculus Trophy on January 7th, it will be someone else. That's a cold hard fact, and a hard pill to swallow for many. Nonetheless, it is the truth.

Should have known CP would come through with the correct answers. Kudos to mr dhood for writing a great review/article that’s easy to draw the ire and jump on the bandwagon against it.

But he’s right. It was a complete chit show from our defense. It started up front with uninspired pass rush and losing containment. We tackled poor all night. We let one playmaker beat us.

We lost our leverage with all our DB’s. We were out of position all night and we haven’t learned since cuse and pitt 16 that when tempo is played, we cannot get our D set and the coaches can’t get the plays in on time.

Sorry folks, TD all you want but that’s one thing that sets little nikki saban apart. He won’t allow players to not play fundamentals. Now, in his defense, he’ll jerk you in a minute if you aren’t and has two more waiting to replace you.

We didn’t play team D. Lined up wrong, just blew assignments and dhood is correct. If we want higher goals, we better get it corrected fast. I just hope it was coachspeak all week that Dabo praises what great practice we had... maybe we did and when the lights went on, we stargazed.

What concerns me is muscoot told us all week what our weaknesses were and what he hoped he could do, and he did it. Also said clemson O would have to give them some breaks. Thank the Good Lord we didn’t on O.

Go Tigers!!!!!

I am no DC, but even w/ my limited football IQ, it seemed like Wallace and Muse were caught multiple times watching Bentley instead of the WR running wide open between them.

In fact most of the deep balls against us to me feel like they have been to a route that cuts in to the middle about that area.

Is that something to do w/ discipline/miscommunication between those two?

D Hood, your articles are almost always excellent. This one missed the mark. The above post is much more to the proper point. Anyone who think last night's game felt like a loss is pretty much a loser.

The offense was awesome and easily could of racked up more points and first downs without bad officiating. I choose bad versus questionable. Even the announcers stated categorically the 2 PI calls were bad. Why don't they mix league officials instead of going with the visiting teams league officials, if that's what they do. Better yet, go to another conference and take out inherent bias.

The D was poorly prepared or just didn't play sound fundamentals all night, except in the goal line stands. My only disappointment was the timid line rush and blitzing calls, and yeah, total missed DB/S assignments; worst I remember in years.

Point is, our Tigers are 5-0 against the gcocks by a convincing 21 point margin. And yes Muschump, we beat 2 SEC teams in 2018 and have for several years.

Not sure how you can question what dhood is saying. He’s not saying he feels like it is a loss, just using that metaphor for the bigger point of winning the big prise. Yeah it was bad officiating but I really don’t like blaming stuff on the refs. That to me is a loser tude to blame the refs.

The only thing that feels like a loss is the complete chit show from our D. Happened in aTm game and hasn’t been corrected since. We’ve just masked it well with crappy competition we’ve played.

Never blamed the refs; just stated the obvious. Both calls were bad and if they never happened the score would have been higher. We won by 21. As to our competition, no one in the FBS can claim pristine competition cause scheduling long before changes happen, like the fall of the Noles, and injuries. It's not fair or accurate to say our competition has been crappy, imo.

Yes, lets not blame the Refs for Clelin Ferrell changing his set spot on the d-line even though it's absolutely a legal move if you do the way the Refs prefers it to be done. And lets not blame the Refs bc Amari ran to close to a defender that he don't touch, and lets not blame the Refs for watching a defender all over Ross with no attempt at looking for the ball. It's not the Refs job to do his job, it's just not his fault.

I just can't agree with your assessment of the Refs in this game my friend, it was just to blatant to who the refs were siding with in the game!!! Conference affiliation shouldn't have had any bearing on how they done their JOB, and I don't feel it was the case in our game bc it was clear from the beginning that the coots were getting away with a ton of should have been called that just wasn't happening, and it was just tooooo Clear, that is what they were doing!!!!

If you look at what i day, i blame the refs for blowing calls. They were crap. I should have said the refs aren’t something you can control. As Dabo always says you have to overcome that. Fortunate it doesn’t cost us a game...

Ive always respect your and eagles perspective. I also don’t like calling someone an idiot because of a post or opinion.

As for crappy competition, we couldn’t control that either. As for not getting it fixed, we had a problem in the aTm game, the Pitt game 16, and the cuse game 17, anf this game getting defensive signals in quick enough when teams go tempo. That and wearing down teams is why teams go tempo. More accurately, we’ve played teams with quick release qbs poorly if they have a decent oline.

That’s all I was saying about us not correcting that problem. Few teams can. In fact, the only team I can think that does is bama. Their DB’s are on the receivers like glue.... rarely do you ever see busts. DW4 had to play an unbelievable game to beat them. That and our receivers played lights out.

Did you notice the cut blocking scheme they had on the first play w/ their entire OLine falling into the DLine?

Maybe we did not go aggressive because we did not need to and did not want to risk a big DLine injury from those cut blocks scar apparently had been working on.

Well the finale score says we won, but our D did lose and thank God that our offense was out standing for a change, and TL has a lot to do with that. The bogus PI call against Amari was a TD called back, and the no PI call with the defender hanging all over Justin Ross would have been a TD if the defender hadn't been draped over him almost pulling him to the ground. Just those two plays were 14 points that the Refs just flat out stole, and I think most of us would feel better with the 70 points that we should've had if not for SEC Refs helping out an SEC team if you want to consider the coots as a true SEC team, I don't consider them as that even though they wear the SEC logo patch!!!

One bad game is a data point and two bad games starts a trend. Giving up almost a 1000 yards passing in 2 games (SC and TA&M) is concerning. Whether both those teams just played out of their minds because it's a rivalry game or a team looking for a signature win, there is a problem. The Tigers have more talent than Pitt and if they come to play will take care of business next Saturday. If you don't believe the opposition talent will improve exponentially after Pitt, you're sadly mistaken. The final 4 in the CFP will all be playing out of their minds.

Point made and plus 1. Some folks see last night as an anomaly but as you eloquently put it this isn’t the first time this season. I would imagine the Saban minions are already planning to put his tight ends into the openings we have generously left for them. Those who see this as “whining complaining grousing etc etc” will watch wide eyed as the much better competition (than has been played against so far, and competition capable of closing the game out) coming in the next few games reaps points on the board due to secondary miscues and missteps. Wanting to be better and improve play and execution is Never “whining blah blah blah”....if so BV is guilty of it every game as he holds players to a high standard and isn’t afraid to verbalize it. It’s what makes him a great coach,...yet when a fan does it it is “whining, blah blah blah”.

Great post, but I have always felt a bit of weakness in our secondary. I am not sure what was going on last night with our Big D, but what I did like was that Venables was quick to replace the weakness. Quick adjustments were required when we have Gamecock wide receivers running down field wide open. I just hope that we have all the weakness figured out...soon....like real soon. You have made a #### of a good case, but our secondary has been suspect all season, and for what ever reason the teams we have played really haven't tried to test our secondary. It may have something to do with the difference in playing against duel threat QB'S that want to get in their yards running the ball, and a pocket passer that has to exploit a teams secondary as Bentley done to us, and the way Cole Stoudt done to Oklahoma.

Defense made adjustments after the half

SoCar 1st TD of the 2nd half came against the 2nd and 3rd team.

Then after the fumble, Coaches decided to put the 1st team back in halfway through the drive. So Car caught them off guard and scored again.

After the 3rd quarter the game wasn't in doubt. The defense tightened up and good guys went up by 28.

Nov 25, 2018, 9:56 AM

This game may have exposed the greatest "weakness" of the Tigers and that is our secondary. Our defensive line and linebackers are stellar but can't cover the whole field! BV has his work cut out for him getting this fixed and I'm not sold that he can or will. If we make it to the playoffs which we should you can bet that this game will be studied and the team(s) playing us will make every attempt to exploit our weakness which is our secondary. I was banking on another national championship but now I'm not so sure...

Nov 25, 2018, 10:41 AM

Over 500 yards from Jake Bentley makes that statement a little questionable. BV called the performance "embarrassing." If you don't think that we have some issues in the secondary then you have your head in the sand, and those of us that admit I aren't being negative. We are being honest. In some ways, it is better for it to show up this week (although it has been somewhat evident all year) so that Venables can make adjustments. However, those of us, who wish that it was anybody else that had exploited things, are not whining. We know that it was a moral victory for the USuC fans whether it was for the team or not. Best is the standard and best is when we are putting the seniors in for curtain calls, not to ensure the outcome.

The #1 defense in the nation laid an egg against the bucknuts and it's almost like we said "hold my beer".

We have given up too many of these long, over the top throws where the backs gamble and lose. Muse is going to get hammered in the film room for his misses, Simmons, well, has some soul searching to do today. Hopefully BV can step back, look at the broad view and design some better coverage schemes because we will see this again.

I think that is because we had guys in the secondary not going for layups, and instead trying to power dunk it every play.

We had 2 guys watching the QB hungry for an int when they could of dbl covered Deebo instead and maybe forced a sack.

We had a guys trying to get in front of a thrown ball instead of in position to make contact or even wrap up the WR.

You people truly live in an orange-colored world. The fact of the matter is that our secondary and pass defense has been a question mark since the A&M game and it got exposed/thrashed by a very mediocre offense on Saturday night. If that game didn’t give you reason for concern against the likes of Tua or Murray (or even Book or Haskins) then you are delusional. Venables himself called the performance an “embarrassment”.

I was lucky enough, as well as, unfortunate enough to be in Miami at the Orange bowl when we played WV. Last night the defense gave up more yards than the past Tiger D gave up against WV in the Orange Bowl. That's something to be proud of. "And you people who suggests that it felt like a loss need to check yourself. For all those people out there who want to complain about five wins in a row and to win by three touchdowns? That's shameful. That's a lack of respect for our program and for our coaches and players. I hope you write that.

"We're a 12-0 football team. We have a senior class who has won 52 games. And we've got people complaining? Give me a break. If 12-0 ain't good enough, it's time to seek other places. Make sure you get that."

One question to those who think this felt like a loss...

Nov 25, 2018, 8:06 PM

Which loss did last night feel most like?

- Loss '#4' to USC in Clemson in 2012 when back up QB Dylan Thompson & USC beat us 27-17 in a game that we were certain was going to end Carolina'a (at the time) 3-game freaky win streak against a superior Clemson team?

- Loss '#5' to USC in Columbia in 2013 when something heretofore inconceivable to Clemson fans became a painful reality -- the fifth loss in a row... to Carolina!!?

- Maybe a more more recent loss -- like the 24-6 loss to Alabama in last year's semi-final?

- Or the record-shattering 70-33 embarrassment in the Miami Orange Bowl in 2012 to WV in what was supposed to be a victorious 30th anniversary of our Orange Bowl victory for the 1981 national championship?

- Any of several gut-wrenching losses to FSU in the B. Bowden era; maybe the 'puntrooskie' game of 1988?

- ANY loss -- EVER????

Come on, folks!!! Yes, there was a lot to be constructively critical of from last night's game. And it stinks that Jake from Flop Farm & crew stung us in a way that will, unfortunately, probably stand in the record books for a long time... BUT LAST NIGHT'S WIN DID NOT FEEL LIKE A LOSS!!

Our boys are 12-0, on track to play -- and win -- another national championship. The embarrassment of 5 losses in a row to the Coots is largely avenged, and prospects look pretty good that our streak will continue to 6 and beyond, disembowling the one tiny semblance of current era football superiority to which USC fans could possibly cling.

Let's keep it in perspective, and always -- ALWAYS -- stand tall, Clemson Tigers.

We beat our rival and got five in a row. Yes, USC jr made some plays and exposed the slot. Texas A&M did the same. In both cases, Clemson emerged victorious. That's the point of the game and not to cover the spread.

head last week while doing some chores around the house. And I have always agreed with it in the past.

This time however, I disagree with it - and your article davidhood®.

I’m not saying I question that you probably did hear a fan say that the win felt like a loss. I’ve ALWAYS appreciated your past insights and first person accounts and observations of gameday events, the atmosphere, and etc. I’ve commented positively on a few, saying just that, by the way. However, you chose to include the comment or sentiment of one fan, and indeed titled your article with that comment. Then, you proceeded with an article that was ‘your opinion’ on what the team’s performance was, and what it could portend, or lead to, in the future.

And as far as I can tell, your article is what was mentioned by Head Coach Dabo Swinney, that has him upset. I am not aware of other comments he may have heard, although he does seem to mention others. And then another media member asks “if the fanbase is spoiled (sic)...” adding more fuel to the fire. Maybe I am reading extra into his comments, however, Dabo does seem to be attributing that attitude to the ENTIRE Clemson fanbase. Sure, he may have qualified his statement with “If that’s what some of the fanbase believes”, just the same, everyone who loves and lives Clemson sports will take his comments personally.

And while Dabo does not define - and nor will his departure end - MY love and devotion to my Alma Mater, his threat of leaving because of a minority of fans, whether they be disgruntled, spoiled, or even ‘pseudo’ fans DOES bother me. And for the part your article - your opinion - has played in causing Dabo to threaten, even double down on it, to go elsewhere, then you weren’t just a messenger - it was you who are also respondible for the message.

Just my thoughts, my friend. Life - and Clemson - will go on, but I for one, think this was not one of your better efforts or attempts in covering our Clemson Tigers.

Most of you bashing him are stuck on the title of this article being 'felt like a loss', but that is exactly what it will be against Bama (or possibly ND) if the D doesn't get corrected. A FACT that our program is elite now, with MUCH bigger goals that just beating the in-state rival. Not everyone alum grew up in SC so the rivalry is not the main focal point of the season.

I am very disappointed in Clemson fans who have become spoiled and expect a team who has played their hearts out this year to be perfect every week. This was not a loss, it was a win even with adversity. Our guys had a down night in the backfield but I know these young men will learn from this. Are we going to complain about everything????? Be thankful we did not lose instead of being upset about a 21 point win. Fans, we are 12 & 0 take it and get ready for the next game. Don't bring your team down. How many teams in America can say they are 12 and 0. Only 4 teams that I can think of right now. Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and UCF. There may be other teams that are smaller colleges but there are very few. Lets be grateful and believe in our guys. I believe in my Tigers!!!

Re: TNET: When a win feels like a loss: Tigers show there is still work to be done

I've seen a LOT of chatter about this issue. This is such a moot point. To those thinking of this win as a loss, shame on you. Who told you the Tigers were perfect? That they never make mistakes? That SEC refs know what they are talking about? ####, really Tiger "fans"? For those saying this BS and grading the Tigers on their performance Saturday night, you are NOT fans, you are bandwagon.
Fans are there through thick and thin, we see the tradgedy and the triumphs, but we NEVER, EVER talk #### about our own team! If you say you're All In, that you are Tiger loyal, that your blood runneth orange, then stand behind it or go cheer on a school and a team that doesn't care about talking out of both sides of your mouth. Commit or get the hell out.

I for one want Dabo to know that my family, getting ready to be 5th generation Tiger loyal to Clemson, would never ever say that ANY win was like a loss. They may have not played their best game, but they played hard, they kept their eye on the prize, and ######, they won, by 21, yes 21 POINTS. Not a squeaker, not a hail Mary, 3 FULL TDs.

I do have to say, as an aside, Venebles should not have said he was disgusted and embarrassed by the defense. Those are strong words to use about the work HE does and the buck stops with HIM.

So, anyone reading this, unless you can coach or play it better than the ones currently on the job, you really DO need to check yourselves.

When a win feels like a loss: Tigers show there is still work to be done

It hasn’t been a secret that the Clemson football program has been on a fast track to the College Football Playoff this season, but the defense that showed up Saturday night in Death Valley won’t win any national championships. Full Story »

A ring for the thumb over the SCjr. program is great! The title of your article is circus lemonade.
