TNET: Clemson spring game takeaways: Depth building on lines, sophomore WR stands out

Clemson spring game takeaways: Depth building on lines, sophomore WR stands out

It’s just a scrimmage, but after three-plus months without Clemson football, I found myself unreasonably excited to watch and analyze every detail of Clemson’s Orange and White Spring Football Game. It’s always dangerous to read too much into small sample sizes, but layered upon Coach Swinney’s comments throughout spring practice and after the game, there were a few takeaways. Full Story »

What about EJ Williams. Thought he'd be featured.

As for incoming qbs, sounds like Dabo is sold on Bubba coming in... Perhaps with TP going down, he has a different perspective and could get snaps this year. Idk, the baseball money hard to turn down unless he's wanting to pursue football.

Maybe now that practice is officially over, DJ could swing by the Doug and do a little Dh'ing for Monte... Lol

Yeah, if he's a 1st round pick, that signing bonus will be hard to walk away from. 3 or 4 years on a minor league bus will have him wishing he had picked football, but he could always come back.

If he wants to play MLB he might want to get that minor league stuff started, IF he is drafted high enough. Depends what his goal is.

My guess is that they’ll definitely have an ear to the ground to see if an experienced #2 QB becomes available in the portal. The stuff about going with what you got is just coach-speak and what Dabo needs to say to encourage the backups on the team.

I was pretty excited to see Shipley out there. Would have loved to see him get the ball outside the tackles more with some space to operate.

Nice to see XT looking quick out there. Always pulling for that guy.

Did Galloway play? I don’t recall seeing him. Lay looked good in uniform, but whiffed on a couple blocks. Great size though

How can anyone possibly analyze a football team from a scrimmage in which at least 11 players from the one and two-deep rotation sat out for one reason or another?

In case you might have missed it, the team did get analyzed. The veterans sat out. Dabo didnt want uga to know too much. This was a way to get the younger players excited. If you read and think, sometimes you actually get something out of it

Only the coaches and players know where they are at this point. But even we fans can sense who is excited to be out there, who is playing hard, etc. I loketheway Mahfa runs. Low center of gravity will make him tough to bring down.

Players have responsibilities, coaches have responsibilities

Media has responsibilities. You make a living by posting or saying stuff about sports.

Ask any 1 is the media. Empty air is the absolute worst thing you can have. Integrity, ethics, and accountability don't matter. You fill that air time with something..

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

Positives: We are insanely good at RB. TE room looks the best it has in years. Massive improvements across the O Line in all phases. Kicking game is solid. Murphy/Bresee/Davis are war daddies. Haven't felt this good about our LB corps in a while--Bentley/Simpson/Trotter are emerging stars. Ajou is a matchup nightmare on a CB. Collins and Ngata impressed.

Question marks: Will XT rebound and have the season we know he's fully capable of (I'm leaning towards an emphatic yes) ? Can Swint make an impact at DE? Can Henry/Mascoll improve on setting the edge? Can Williams, Capehart, Reuben, Orhrohro step up and provide quality depth on D Line that we missed last year (leaning towards an emphatic yes here as well) ? Can Ladson stay healthy?

Negatives: Just hate the injury Taisun had......he really came on in the 2nd half. Praying for him that he can come back from this.

Screw Calford.

Thanks for more background for those of us who missed game

Apr 5, 2021, 10:56 AM

I really hope Ajou gets some serious p.t. He seems more athletic than anyone on team. Coach him up and put him in for physical play.

DJ missed on a lot of throws. As in not even close.

Can't take much away from the Spring game, but we left DV talking about the QBs. I know we're spoiled, but neither of them looked ready.

That does seem to be the takeaway... Even Dabo mentioned it about DJU getting a handle on playbook and bringing the young fellas up to speed before fall.

Also, as mentioned, some were definitely broken routes. But when you think about it, except for Spector ( not playing) SOME with Ladson/ajou EJ, no other receivers from last year that he repped with.

Speaking of EJ, he wasn't listed as out, did I miss something? Thought he'd have had a coming out party in the game... Did he even play. Tia

DJ did look good throwing to his old HS classmate, Beaux Collins. I watched a lot of DJ's film at Bosco, and man those two have some fantastic chemistry. I think Collins will be our next breakout at WR a la Ross.
