Tillman Hall Question

Jul 17, 2015, 7:01 PM

I have a sincere, honest question. Does anyone of reasonable intellect believe that had Ben Tillman
killed white people, there would be a fight to keep his name on a Clemson Building?

Well if he had killed whites, he would have been prosecuted.

I guess it would depend on who the whites were. Being brutally honest, a white share cropper at that time was of no more value in the eyes of the government than a black share cropper.

Your probably right. Back then there was a very small middle class. A small percentage of the population, the wealthy, ruled a predominately lower-middle class (farmers and merchants) and the rest very poor. As has been effective throughout history, they united people against a common enemy....blacks, white trash and yankees; blacks being at the top of the list.

I hear people screaming about 'they're trying to erase our history' in defense of Tillman. I find it an odd claim as it's leveled against those who are exposing the man's whole history. Ultimately the obvious question is are we so blinded by our fealty to the university that we continue to honor a man who is otherwise an embarrassment to the university and the state.

From a purely historical perspective it seems to me that South Carolina can step off of the 'stupid train' about any time it wants. But pride and a warped sense of 'heritage' keeps it planted firmly in the caboose till this day. It has been on the wrong side of history...for centuries.

It is no wonder that SC ranks dead last in education. We do love our ignorance.

Where did you see that the state of SC ranks last in education?

Jul 21, 2015, 4:15 PM

I saw in the ALEC rankings SC was the 51st state in the rankings. But there are only 50 states so I wonder about that list. It also said SC was in the top for student grades. Did you see SC last in some other rankings?

The Alec rankings include The District of Columbia, hence us being 51st. It hurts my feelings that Mississippi and Alabama ....and DC are ahead of us. Unfortunately, as a culture, South Carolina doesn't appear to have historically placed a large value on education. I recall my dad telling me that after he got out of the Navy at the end of WWII, his family and friends laughed and made fun of him for going to Clemson on the G.I. Bill. They accused him of being 'uppity'.No one on either side of his or my mom's family had ever gone beyond 12th grade until he did.

"Poor and Proud of IT" seemed to be a common theme among

I guess there are many different ways to view history.
If we were to build a building today on campus and name it "Tillman Hall," I would see a huge problem with that. The hall was built in the late 1800's. Tillman was mainstream at that time. The man was elected Governor, he was not some fringe nut case. His views reflected the majority view of the state. A reminder of what we used to be is a most excellent guide to shape our future. I do not like Tillman. I do recognize his contribution to Clemson University.

Yes. He was a huge reason Clemson is what it is today. Without him, we would probably not exist. Coot U would be the only major university in the State. Historical figures are commonly honored for their contributions and their short comings are conveniently overlooked.
