This isn't a bomb thrown at CT, but he's has all the surgeries & rehab paid for by Clemson and then he thanks them by leaving the program. I realize that this happens all the time in all kinds of sports & at all schools, but this should be a situation to get addressed by NCAA (I know, insert joke!). This is where NIL money should be returned by the athletes for "services rendered" or just flat out repaid by the athletes if they don't fulfill their part of the obligation.

Seems like Gillen followed that too. Unfortunately this will be the way it is unless congress gets involved. In some ways, I don't think we really want that either. Maybe the school can work something about this issue in to their revenue share agreements.

It's a fundamentally broken and wild system. Money is keeping it moving...

but money alone can't sustain a national institution. At some point you have to have cohesion, clarity, consistency and enforced principles.

Not sure Talent would be the best poster player for needing NIL changes. I highly doubt he received much if any NIL. He only ever received a fractional academic scholarship. Probably got some cost of attendance Alston money each year (~$5k). He put in the work trying to get back from the injuries. I also suspect when he decided to try a comeback, Bakich probably didn’t have a scholarship available (first 34) to provide. He would be grandfathered onto the roster, but that’s true of places he might transfer to.

Agree, he was told last year by doctors that he wouldn't be able to pitch again. He also pitched two years before his injury, so implying that he conned Clemson into to paying for his surgery is BS. Gillen would be a much better case, but he also attempted to come back before getting hurt again.
Not to mention the fact that he's only ever pitched 20 innings in a season and had an okay 3.65 ERA. Who in the bullpen do we pitch him over? With Allen, Titsworth, McGovern, plus the 3 or 4 pitching transfers coming in he doesn't have a spot. We have good looking freshman coming in as well, so he isn't going to be in the regular rotation of relievers coming in, ESPECIALLY after he was deemed unable to play baseball again. This is probably a similar reason for Gillen to leave; coming off injury and getting recruited over leads to transferring.

This makes sense. Thanks to both for your response. But my initial reaction was to agree with coachmac.
For me, it's more about most all the transfers. It was instilled in me from an early age, a handshake and your word meant something. Without stipend or nil, these kids are getting a great deal.

Buddy that cuts both ways. Coaches tell kids stuff when they recruit them, shake their hands and look the parents in the eye and say “we will take care of your boy” and leave them hangin out to dry without ever giving them a chance. You’re living in another world if you think the players owe the coach or school anything expect a “thanks for the opportunity”. Some of these guys transferring out LOVE Clemson but were never given a full shot or were sold a bag of lies.

That's one thing that always gets me on the posts where a decent player leaves, and everyone acts like they're on par with Benedict Arnold. I don't think we've had a single player outside of Del Jones and Billy Amick transfer out for more money. Clemson is in the highest level of competition and most of the guys brought in have some level of professional aspirations, but they can't get to the next level without showing off what they can do. TP got recruited over by Dalley, Savoie, Clavon (who will play 3B or CF depending on Wideman), and Wideman (although he probably won't make it to Clemson), and then left for a school that will provide him a starting role. He's got the makeup of an MLB player, and risking the most important season in terms of draft scouting is silly. He had a starting spot and lost it without having any chance of reclaiming it, then promptly left. You can't get better if you don't play against good competition.
Tallent didn't have a shot next year of getting any significant playing time without the bullpen getting obliterated by injuries. I don't know why he's getting flak for leaving when his opportunities are clearly not at Clemson.

see your point, but one could argue injuries came while playing for Clemson, I don't have as much of an issue with it, same as if a senior was injured and needed post season surgery etc

It's kinda silly to pretend this is college athletics anymore.

Schools are just putting their logo on traveling mercenaries. I don't blame the players at all. They are looking after their own interests. But it's silly to pretend this is actually college athletics anymore. The system is just a wild, unregulated madhouse. Professional sports make so much more sense as a fan now. Contracts. It also highlights just how much fortitude Dabo has to push back against this insanity in how he leads our football program.
