It was really a perfect storm regarding Venables departure. Usually when an assistant leaves, it is for a program that is downtrodden, or rebuilding, and players don't want to follow, etc. But that is not the case here.
On one hand, I can't blame the kids if they really wanted to play for Brent, but on the other I can't help but feel some type of way towards them. But they committed to play for Clemson under the guidance of Venables as defensive coordinator. So I really can't be too upset with them. And not upset with Brent because he is not recruiting them, but he can't stop them from wanting to go where he goes.This really is a mess and I just hope we can salvage the offensive commits. I expect we will lose nearly all of the defensive commits.
I hope Dabo will now realize that you can't ignore the transfer portal because you want to do the right thing and not pull from the portal and put them ahead of your recruited athletes. It is all a business for everyone involved, from the coaches to players. And players that you are worried about recruiting over, will leave the program in a heartbeat for any reason.
I have never understood why our class is often small. I understand the numbers limit, but it seems our class is small much more often than other teams. Who cares about per athlete average star if you only had 14 to begin with. This year's class was only at 14 before these defections and only a week before signing day. Unless they were planning on getting 10 more commits in the last six days, this was going to be a very small class and that was after losing 7 players in-season to the transfer portal.
How can we make up for a completely lost class? I think Dabo is going to have to hit the transfer portal hard now just to make up numbers. I'd go and find exactly the players that are in the portal that have the same potential these decommits had. They may not be there, but I don't see any other option at this point.

I think it was questioning WHY we were signing a class of only 13-15 to begin with?
After the early signing period, ASSUMING we sign the current 12 commits we'll have 12ish available scholarships!!!!
that has to be filled by a combination of: WALK-ON (please no), Portal (have to), or "late to the game offers" to guys that we didn't offer earlier b/c of the low number of offers Dabo hands out...............the transfer portal (and NIL deal) has completely transformed how coaches have to manage recruiting, roster, etc.............and dabo is late to the game in the portal....he actually hasn't arrived at the game yet.

available due to Covid. Since Dabo isn't just going to chase someone off he had to wait to see who would exercise that extra year. 4-5 said they were moving on after the SC game. Henry has yet to decide. Until the scholarships were open, there was no room. Throw in the two late transfers, something they didnt know until after the SC game, and you have more scholarships open. There was no way to know exactly how many scholarships would be available.
Every team is facing this who will simply not run off players. It's not rocket science

I can’t recall the exact year - but think it was after our first CFP - I met 81-85 in a ChickFilA parking lot in Atlanta to give him copies of some extra SIs I had with Deshaun, Gallman and the Championship issue, for the price of a chicken sandwich meal. He pulled in and his car had three or four paw stickers, etc. on his car. I truly thought he was a solid Clemson fan and ‘All In’.

I think the returning players on both sides of the ball will make us an ACC Championship caliber team next year. They may just be good enough to run through the regular season undefeated. After next season could be the time for Clemson to look into the transfer portal, if it is needed. Dabo will get us through these changes. The world is now falling for Clemson. We have not lost a game since Venables left.

Yep and the longer Dabo waits to acknowledge the issue the more recruits are gonna leave and then whatever internal turnover in players there is. It's back to the Bowden days now good times are gone. Dabo stock way down.

It makes sense that recruits open up their commitments when the main guys are gone. It doesn't mean we can't get them back with the right hires. These kids are deciding their futures and I can't blame them. It puts the pressure on us to find the right guys to lead them.
